Taxonomy & naming
Cyclopharynx fwae was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1948 in the Revue de Zoologie et de Botanique Africaines, in a paper devoted entirely to new cichlids collected by Dr. Jacques (Yakov) Schwetz in the Fwa River of the then Belgian Congo. It is the type species of the genus Cyclopharynx, which Poll erected in the same work and which to this day contains only two species — Cyclopharynx fwae and its congener Cyclopharynx schwetzi. The genus name is Greek: kyklos, a circle, and pharynx, the throat, referring (in Poll's words, translated) to the 'perfectly rounded and concave' lower pharyngeal bone of Cyclopharynx fwae, a heavily built grinding plate that is the genus's signature feature. The species epithet simply marks the river: fwae means 'of the Fwa.' In the same 1948 paper Poll named a second nominal form, Callopharynx microdon, from the Fwa; that genus and species were later synonymised with Cyclopharynx fwae by Kullander and Roberts in their 1991 CLOFFA treatment, so Cyclopharynx fwae carries Callopharynx microdon Poll, 1948 as a junior synonym. The genus belongs to the African cichlid subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae and to the haplochromine radiation. The single most important modern reference is the monograph by Tyson Roberts and Sven Kullander, 'Endemic cichlid fishes of the Fwa River, Zaire: systematics and ecology' (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, 1994), which redescribed the Fwa endemics and documented their habitat and biology in detail.
Morphology
Cyclopharynx fwae is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid reaching about 5 in in standard length, making it a medium-sized fish by haplochromine standards. FishBase lists this maximum length on the authority of the CLOFFA checklist; most specimens are smaller. The defining anatomical character of the species is internal and gives the genus its name: the lower pharyngeal bone — the paired toothplate in the throat that cichlids use as a second set of jaws — is broadened into a stout, rounded, concave grinding mill. This molariform pharyngeal apparatus is built for crushing rather than slicing, the kind of dentition that across cichlids is associated with hard-shelled prey, though in Cyclopharynx fwae it is paired with a diet dominated by attached algae (see Feeding). Externally the fish carries the typical haplochromine plan — a single dorsal fin with a spinous front and soft-rayed rear, a rounded to slightly emarginate caudal fin, and a terminal mouth. Males in breeding condition develop the brighter, more saturated colours and the longer, more pointed unpaired fins usual in the group; in aquarium photographs adult males show metallic blue-green flank iridescence with darker vertical barring. As in nearly all haplochromines, sexual dimorphism is present: males are larger, more intensely coloured, and finnage-extended, while females are plainer and silvery-brown, the cryptic palette of a mouthbrooding parent. Roberts and Kullander's 1994 revision provides the formal meristic and morphometric diagnosis separating Cyclopharynx fwae from its congener Cyclopharynx schwetzi.
Habitat
Cyclopharynx fwae is endemic to the Fwa River, a short tributary in the Kasai drainage of the central Congo basin — the Fwa flows into the Lubi (Lubu), which joins the Sankuru, which reaches the Kasai and ultimately the Congo. The whole world range of the species is contained in roughly fifteen kilometres of stream straddling the border between Kasaï-Oriental and Kasaï-Central provinces, about 62 mi northwest of Mbuji-Mayi. The Fwa is no ordinary lowland river: it is a karst system. Its water wells up from underground limestone (calcar) galleries already filtered to an extraordinary clarity, so that the stream is famously crystal-clear with visibility through the whole water column — a quality that has earned it the hobby nickname 'Lake Fwa.' It runs through a small savanna valley lined with tall gallery forest and pandanus-fringed banks, at an elevation of only about 1503–1549 ft. Aquatic vegetation is luxuriant, covering well over two-thirds of the streambed, and the limestone source makes the water mineral-rich, hard, and near-neutral to mildly alkaline rather than the soft blackwater typical of much of the Congo basin. The climate is tropical with a dry season (roughly April–August) and a rainy season (September–March), and water temperatures sit in the warm tropical range of the high twenties Celsius. Within this jewel-box habitat Cyclopharynx fwae lives among the dense plant growth and over the calcareous substrate; precise in-situ depth and chemistry figures for the species are not separately published, but the stream is shallow and wadeable along much of its length, so the fish occupies the upper few metres of the water column.
Feeding
Despite the heavy, rounded crushing-mill in its throat, Cyclopharynx fwae is recorded by FishBase as feeding mainly on algae and diatoms — that is, on the aufwuchs and microalgal films that coat the abundant plants, rocks and submerged surfaces of its clearwater home. FishBase places its trophic level at about 3.4, consistent with a grazer that also takes the small invertebrates living within that algal turf. This is a notable mismatch worth stating plainly: the genus name and the species' molariform pharyngeal bone point to a snail- or shellfish-crushing (molluscivorous) ancestry or capacity, yet the documented diet of Cyclopharynx fwae itself is dominated by attached algae rather than molluscs. The likeliest reading is that the powerful pharyngeal mill lets the fish process tough, fibrous, or hard-shelled items opportunistically — including any snails it encounters — while its bread-and-butter foraging is grazing the rich algal growth of the Fwa. Roberts and Kullander's 1994 ecological study of the Fwa endemics is the primary source on how these fishes partition the food resources of the stream; in the aquarium trade the species is treated as an omnivore that takes prepared foods, small invertebrates and plant matter readily.
Mating
Like the great majority of African haplochromine cichlids, Cyclopharynx fwae is a maternal mouthbrooder, and its mating system follows the pattern that implies. Courtship and pair formation are transient rather than pair-bonded: a male takes up and defends a small territory or display site and courts ripe females that pass through, the female choosing among displaying males. Spawning is therefore polygynous in tendency, with the male contributing nothing beyond fertilisation and the female assuming all parental duties. Detailed in-situ observations of courtship colour, display behaviour and territoriality specific to Cyclopharynx fwae have not been published in the hobby literature; the behaviour is inferred from the species' confirmed ovophilic, maternal-mouthbrooding reproductive mode (FishBase, after the CLOFFA and Roberts & Kullander treatments) and from the well-documented courtship of related Congo-basin haplochromines. Males in breeding dress show the intensified iridescent colour typical of the group, which functions in both female attraction and male-male signalling within the dense, plant-broken habitat of the Fwa.
Breeding
Cyclopharynx fwae is an ovophilic maternal mouthbrooder: the female lays a relatively small clutch of comparatively large, yolk-rich eggs, takes them into her mouth, and incubates them through hatching and the early free-swimming stage. Fertilisation is achieved in the manner classic for haplochromines — the female collects the eggs almost immediately after laying, and the male's anal-fin markings or her snapping at his vent draw milt into the buccal cavity to fertilise the held clutch. No published clutch count exists specifically for Cyclopharynx fwae; congeneric and other comparably sized haplochromine mouthbrooders typically carry on the order of a few dozen eggs (roughly 20–60), and that genus-typical range is the best available guide. During incubation the female ceases feeding and shelters the developing young in her mouth; after release the fry may continue to bolt back into her mouth for protection for a short period before becoming fully independent. Parental care is thus entirely maternal and post-spawning, with no male involvement. Captive breeding of the Fwa endemics is uncommon but has been achieved by specialist keepers; the species' high reproductive resilience (FishBase estimates a population-doubling time of under 15 months) is consistent with regular spawning under good conditions.
In the aquarium
Cyclopharynx fwae is a genuine rarity in the hobby — a 'holy grail' Lake Fwa endemic that surfaces only occasionally through specialist importers and dedicated breeders, far more often as its congener Cyclopharynx schwetzi than as fwae itself. It is not a beginner's fish, chiefly because of its scarcity and the need to mirror an unusual water chemistry. The Fwa is a hard, mineral-rich, crystal-clear karst stream, so unlike most Congo-basin cichlids this fish does not want soft acidic blackwater. Aim for clear, well-oxygenated, moderately hard water at a near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH (roughly 7.0–8.0) and a warm temperature in the mid-to-high twenties Celsius (about 75–82 °F); trade care sheets for the genus suggest pH 6.5–7.5 and 75–81 °F as a workable envelope, with the higher pH and hardness preferable given the limestone habitat. A medium-sized fish of about 4.5 in, it can be housed by a small group in a tank of around 30–40 US gal or more, though a larger footprint eases the territorial squabbling that breeding males will show. Furnish the aquarium to echo its home: a calcareous sand or fine-gravel substrate, smooth rockwork and roots to break sightlines, robust planting (the wild fish lives among dense vegetation), bright clean water, strong filtration and brisk flow, and immaculate maintenance — these are fish of pristine, fast-renewing spring water and they resent accumulated waste. Feed an omnivore's diet weighted toward greens and aufwuchs-substitutes: a quality spirulina-based or vegetable flake and pellet, supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates. Tankmates should be peaceful and chosen with the species' rarity in mind; many keepers maintain it in a single-species or Fwa-biotope setup so that any spawnings can be managed and the bloodline conserved. Because every aquarium fish ultimately traces to one tiny, threatened river, responsible keepers treat Cyclopharynx fwae as a conservation charge as much as an ornamental — it is a CARES Priority List species for exactly this reason.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Cyclopharynx fwae as Least Concern (assessed 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants, published 2010), a category that reflects the absence of any documented species-level decline rather than a wide or secure range — the assessment lists population trend as Unknown and threats as 'none known' at the time. That LC rating sits uneasily against the species' biology, because Cyclopharynx fwae is the very definition of a narrow-range endemic: its entire global distribution is a single fifteen-kilometre karst stream. The Fwa was designated a Key Biodiversity Area in 2024, qualifying on its assemblage of restricted-range fishes — seven endemic species, including both Cyclopharynx, Schwetzochromis neodon, two Thoracochromis, and others. The KBA assessment documents real and growing pressures on this irreplaceable habitat: deforestation of the gallery forest for charcoal and shifting agriculture (accelerating sharply since around 2018), the resulting soil erosion into the valley, and — most directly damaging to the fish — artisanal palm-oil processing that dumps acidic waste and palm-nut shells into the stream, smothering the shoreline plants where juveniles shelter and lowering the water's pH. New, indiscriminate fishing methods such as mosquito-net seining, though still rare, threaten the juvenile stock. The aquarium hobby has recognised the stakes: the CARES Preservation Program lists Cyclopharynx fwae as a priority species, and conservation-minded keepers maintain it precisely because a single polluted or deforested stream could imperil a fish found nowhere else on the planet. Its long-term security depends not on the comfortable LC label but on protecting the Fwa itself.
