Geophagus mirabilis is a strikingly marked eartheater from a single isolated stretch of the rio Aripuanã, a clearwater tributary of the Madeira in the southern Brazilian Amazon. Described only in 2014, its name is Latin for "remarkable" — earned by a coloration unique in the genus: a longitudinal row of black blotches down each flank and a face mapped with iridescent blue spots and vermiculations. Like its surinamensis-group relatives it is a sand-sifting, biparental larvophilous mouthbrooder, and it ranks among the most coveted of the recently discovered eartheaters in the hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Geophagus mirabilis was described in 2014 by Gabriel C. Deprá, Sven O. Kullander, Carla S. Pavanelli and Weferson J. da Graça in the Brazilian journal Neotropical Ichthyology, on a series of 80 type specimens from the upper rio Aripuanã in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The holotype (MCP 48123, a 5 in SL adult) was collected in 2005 about 1 mi upstream of the Dardanelos/Andorinhas falls, at roughly 10°10′S 59°28′W and 394 ft elevation; paratypes are split among Brazilian and European museum collections (CPUFMT, INPA, MZUSP, NUP, UFRO-I and others). The fish had been known to aquarists since around 2009 under the provisional trade label Geophagus sp. 'Aripuanã' (and earlier, confusingly, as Geophagus cf. argyrostictus 'Aripuanã'), and was flagged as a likely new species by Jens Gottwald in 2011 before the formal description gave it a valid name. Geophagus is a large genus of South American eartheaters; mirabilis belongs to the Geophagus surinamensis species group (Geophagus sensu stricto), the assemblage of true Geophagus characterised by long posterior swim-bladder diverticles supported by short ribs — a feature unique among cichlids. The describers placed it near the other rio Madeira-drainage Geophagus on coloration but explicitly declined to assign it to a formal subgroup, noting that the various 'clades' previously proposed within the surinamensis complex (Staeck & Schindler, 2006; López-Fernández & Taphorn, 2004) were never supported by a phylogenetic analysis. Subsequent molecular work mapping the genus (Ximenes et al., 2021) recovered an Aripuanã–Machado–lower Tapajós clearwater lineage consistent with the fish's restricted clearwater range. No synonyms exist for this young name.

Morphology

Geophagus mirabilis is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed eartheater. FishBase lists a maximum of 6.5 in standard length (the snout-to-tail-base measure); the largest examined paratypes reach about 7 in SL, which corresponds to roughly 8 in in total length with the tail included — so hobby reports of an 8-inch fish are accurate for the body and a little over that overall. Fin counts run to XV–XVII dorsal spines with 9–12 soft rays, and three anal spines with 7–8 soft rays. The diagnostic feature, and the source of the name, is the colour pattern: in fish larger than about 3 in SL there are two to six black blotches arranged in a longitudinal row along the middle of the flank (most other Geophagus show only a single midlateral spot, or none), and the side of the head carries a rich pattern of iridescent blue, round-to-vermiculate marks found in no other species of the genus. Against an olive-to-brassy body shot with blue-green flecking, this combination is unmistakable. Finer diagnostic characters separate it from close congeners: it lacks any dark cheek stripe and lacks the dark preopercular spot seen in several relatives, has unusually large body scales (only 4½–5½ scale rows between the first dorsal spine and the upper lateral line, versus 6½–7½ in all other Geophagus), seven scale rows around the caudal peduncle below the lateral line, and a low E1 lateral scale count of 29–31. The juveniles are famously plain — a drab, lightly mottled grey — and only acquire the spangled adult dress as they mature, an "ugly-duckling" transformation that breeders often remark on. Sexual dimorphism is modest: as in most surinamensis-group eartheaters, males grow somewhat larger and develop slightly more produced fins, while ripe females are deeper and fuller through the belly, but the sexes are not reliably told apart on colour alone.

Habitat

Geophagus mirabilis is endemic to the rio Aripuanã drainage upstream of the Dardanelos/Andorinhas falls, in the upper rio Madeira basin of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The Aripuanã is a major right-bank tributary of the Madeira, and the falls form a sharp biogeographic barrier: the fish fauna above them is distinct from the Madeira floodplain below, and the species is genuinely confined to this upland clearwater stretch and its tributaries (the rio Azul and others), recorded from around 394 ft up to roughly 919 ft elevation. It is a clearwater fish — the Aripuanã runs comparatively transparent over pale sand, fringed by white-sand igapó forest, rather than the tea-black water of a true blackwater river or the silt-laden whitewater of the Madeira proper. Specific in-situ chemistry for the type reach is poorly published, but the water is consistently described as soft and low in dissolved minerals, mildly acidic to near-neutral (around pH 6 to the low 7s), and warm (high-20s °C, the upper-20s to low-30s typical of these shallow Shield rivers). The reach above the falls includes rapids and faster runs as well as calmer sandy pools, so the fish is at home with some current. As a benthopelagic eartheater it works the sandy and leaf-strewn bottom of these forested rivers. The narrow, single-drainage range above a waterfall is the hallmark of the upper Aripuanã endemics: the describers counted Geophagus mirabilis among at least ten fish species restricted to the upper Aripuanã, part of a small flock of locally endemic cichlids and catfishes that the falls have isolated.

Feeding

Like all Geophagus, Geophagus mirabilis is a sand-sifting eartheater (the genus name means "earth-eater"). It feeds by taking mouthfuls of sand and fine sediment, sorting edible items — small benthic invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans, detritus and the organic film on the substrate — in the mouth and pharynx and expelling the cleaned grains through the gill openings and mouth. FishBase places the genus low on the food web, estimating a trophic level near 2.3, consistent with a micro-invertivore and detritivore rather than a predator. No dedicated wild gut-content study of this species has been published, so its specific diet is inferred from its anatomy and from the well-documented habits of its surinamensis-group relatives, all of which are committed benthic sifters. In its forested clearwater habitat it functions as one of the substrate processors of the leaf-litter and sand zones, continually turning over the top layer of the bottom as it forages.

Mating

Detailed field observations of courtship in Geophagus mirabilis are lacking, but in captivity it behaves as a typical surinamensis-group eartheater: it is best kept as a group of young fish that sort themselves into pairs as they mature, rather than as a forced pair. Mature fish form comparatively short-lived, monogamous pair bonds around a spawning event rather than the female-led harem systems of some other geophagines. Pairing fish stake out and clean a flat, open surface — a stone, a root or a patch of firm substrate — and become moderately territorial around it, though by the standards of large New World cichlids the species is fairly even-tempered. Keepers describe it as generally peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates and only modestly aggressive toward conspecifics, somewhat "feistier" than the closely allied Geophagus sveni but rarely seriously destructive. As with most eartheaters, the heaviest aggression is intraspecific and flares when a pair has eggs or wrigglers to defend; outside of breeding the fish shoal loosely and peacefully.

Breeding

Geophagus mirabilis is a biparental, larvophilous (delayed) mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared across the surinamensis group. The pair spawns in the open on a cleaned solid surface — a stone or root — laying the eggs on the substrate where they are guarded and fanned, as in a normal substrate-spawning cichlid. The brood is only taken into the mouth once it reaches the larval (wriggler) stage, after which the parents take turns carrying the developing young orally and periodically releasing and re-collecting the free-swimming fry to graze, sheltering them in the mouth at any threat. Both parents share the work — the defining trait of a biparental brooder. Specific clutch counts for this species are not formally published; congeneric surinamensis-group Geophagus typically lay on the order of one to several hundred eggs per spawning, and the species is reported to breed readily in aquaria. Notably, it has proven adaptable to the spawning tank: documented captive breeding (reported in AMAZONAS magazine) succeeded in distinctly hard, alkaline water — well outside the soft, mildly acidic conditions of its native river — suggesting the chemistry triggers are forgiving even though such water bears no resemblance to the wild habitat. Aquarium offspring are raised commercially in small numbers, and it is from these tank-bred fish that most hobbyists obtain the species.

In the aquarium

Geophagus mirabilis is a prized but uncommon eartheater in the hobby, traded first under the name Geophagus sp. 'Aripuanã' and still only intermittently available — wild fish are scarce and most offered stock is tank-bred, which keeps prices high and supply patchy (it has surfaced more often in the UK and Europe than in the United States). It is a rewarding fish for an intermediate keeper who can provide space and stable water.

Because it is an active, sand-sifting shoaler that does best in a group of five or six, it needs a long tank: a footprint of at least 47–59 in (four to five feet) and on the order of 300+ litres is a sensible minimum for a group, with the usual eartheater rule of thumb of roughly 15 US gal of water per adult fish. The single non-negotiable furnishing is a deep bed of soft, fine sand — coarse gravel prevents the fish from sifting normally and can damage the gills. Décor of smooth river stones, driftwood and a few sturdy or potted plants suits it, and because the natural habitat includes rapids the species tolerates and even appreciates moderate current and the high oxygenation that comes with it.

Maintenance water should be warm — about 79–86 °F — soft to moderately hard, and from mildly acidic to neutral (roughly pH 6.0–7.5), mirroring the clearwater Aripuanã. That said, the species has proven notably adaptable: aquarists have kept and even bred it in distinctly harder, more alkaline water, so soft acidic water is preferable for authenticity and probably for long-term condition but is not strictly required for survival. Like all eartheaters it is sensitive to accumulated dissolved waste and benefits from generous, regular water changes and efficient filtration. Diet is straightforward: a varied menu of sinking pellets or granules plus frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and other small invertebrates, fed little and often so the fish can sift between meals.

It is one of the more peaceable larger eartheaters and mixes well with calm South American community fish — larger tetras and other characins, peaceful catfish such as Loricariids, and similarly sized non-aggressive cichlids including angelfish, Heros, other Geophagus and even (in a large enough tank) dwarf cichlids, with which keepers report few problems outside the breeding season. Its main quarrels are with its own kind and tend to be minor unless a pair is spawning. The most common mistakes are keeping it over gravel rather than sand, housing it singly or as a forced pair instead of in a group, and underestimating the tank length an active sifter needs.

Conservation

Geophagus mirabilis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (status Not Evaluated), nor is it listed by CITES — unsurprising for a fish described only in 2014. No formal conservation assessment of its population exists. From a precautionary standpoint, however, it is exactly the kind of species that warrants attention: it is a single-drainage endemic confined to the upper rio Aripuanã above the Dardanelos/Andorinhas falls, one of a small cluster of fishes found nowhere else. A narrow, isolated range leaves little buffer against localised threats, and the upper Madeira basin faces real and growing pressures — hydropower development (the Dardanelos hydroelectric dam sits on this very stretch of the Aripuanã), deforestation, and gold-mining with its attendant mercury and siltation. None of these is documented as a present danger to this particular cichlid, and there is at present no evidence of population decline, but they are the backdrop against which any future assessment of so geographically restricted a species would have to be read. Its modest presence in the aquarium trade is supplied largely by captive breeding rather than heavy wild collection.
