Taxonomy & naming
Saxatilia pellegrini was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Alex Ploeg in 1991, in his University of Amsterdam doctoral dissertation 'Revision of the South American cichlid genus Crenicichla Heckel, 1840' — the same monograph that erected fifteen new pike-cichlid species and organized the sprawling genus into the species groups that hobbyists and taxonomists still use. The holotype (INPA 2885) and its paratypes were collected at the Igarapé do Poirto, a stream on the Rio Aripuanã in the Rio Madeira system, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Ploeg placed the fish in his Crenicichla saxatilis group, the assemblage of mid-sized 'spangled' pikes built around the type species of the genus, Crenicichla saxatilis (Linnaeus, 1758). The genus Crenicichla itself was raised by Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840 for Johann Natterer's Brazilian river fishes. In a 2023 integrative phylogenetic revision of the pike cichlids, Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira & López-Fernández split the historically enormous genus and transferred the spangled saxatilis-group species — this one among them — to a resurrected genus Saxatilia, so that the formally current binomial is now Saxatilia pellegrini (Ploeg, 1991). That reclassification is recent and not yet universally adopted in the aquarium literature, and we retain the long-familiar combination Saxatilia pellegrini here while flagging the newer name. The Catalog of Fishes lists no junior synonyms for the species.
Morphology
Saxatilia pellegrini has the elongate, cylindrical, pike-like body shared by all members of the genus: a long head, a wide mouth set with rows of small recurved teeth, and a long-based dorsal fin running most of the length of the back — the build of a fish that lies in wait among submerged wood and lunges. It is a medium-sized pike by the standards of the group; the maximum recorded length is about 6 in standard length, so a large adult is roughly the length of a hand, well short of the 30-cm-plus giants of the lugubris group. As a saxatilis-group species it is diagnosed largely by its markings rather than by gross shape: members of the group carry a dark humeral (shoulder) blotch behind the gill cover, frequently haloed by a paler ring, a dark stripe running from the snout through the eye, and a spot high on the caudal peduncle at the base of the tail. The flanks of many saxatilis-group fish are dusted with the iridescent silver-white flecks that give the assemblage its common name of 'spangled pikes,' though the degree of spangling varies by species and is often weaker in western-Amazon forms than in the coastal pikes of the Guianas. Like all pikes in the group the species is sexually dimorphic (see Mating).
Habitat
The species is a narrow-range endemic of the Rio Aripuanã, a major right-bank tributary that joins the Rio Madeira from the south after draining the northern slopes of the Brazilian Shield. Its type locality and the only confirmed records lie in the upper Aripuanã in Mato Grosso. That places it squarely within the Madeira Brazilian Shield freshwater ecoregion, a region of nutrient-poor clearwater rivers very different from the sediment-laden, Andean-fed main stem of the Madeira. The upper Aripuanã runs over the hard crystalline basement of the Shield, broken by cataracts and rapids that act as natural barriers to fish dispersal — the kind of isolating geography that produces locally endemic cichlids — and its banks are lined in places with white-sand igapó (flooded forest) during the high-water season, which peaks around March and April. As a clearwater Shield river the Aripuanã is typically warm, soft and low in dissolved minerals, with an acidic-to-near-neutral pH; FishBase classifies the species as a benthopelagic freshwater fish of the tropical zone. No in-situ water chemistry has been published specifically for collections of this pike, so the figures given here are the regional norms for its river rather than measurements at the type locality.
Feeding
No stomach-content study has been published for Saxatilia pellegrini specifically, but its feeding ecology can be read confidently from its anatomy and its relatives. Pike cichlids of the saxatilis group are ambush predators: they hold position near cover — submerged logs, root tangles, leaf litter and rock — and strike at passing prey with a fast forward lunge of the elongate, wide-jawed head. In the wild the staple prey of these mid-sized pikes is small fish (the abundant tetras and other characins of Amazonian waters) together with shrimp and aquatic insects; shrimp in particular are ubiquitous in Amazon rivers and turn up routinely in pike stomachs. FishBase places the species at an estimated trophic level of about 3.3, the value of a carnivore that takes invertebrates and small fish rather than a strict piscivore. In its community it functions as a small-bodied predator of the wood-and-litter zones, hunting the same cover it uses for shelter and, when breeding, for its nest.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been documented in Saxatilia pellegrini itself, but the saxatilis group is among the best-known pike assemblages in this respect and the pattern is consistent across its species. The sexes are readily told apart once mature: females develop a pale (often white) submarginal line under the rim of the dorsal fin and a flush of pink or reddish colour on the belly, and in several species the female's dorsal fin carries one or more dark, sometimes ocellated spots; males tend to grow somewhat larger and may show herringbone muscle striations along the flank and stronger spangling. Pairs form when a male and a ripe female court within a shared space, and pike pair-bonds are notoriously fraught: rival conspecifics, especially other individuals of the same sex, are driven off hard, and an ill-matched pair can turn lethal — a male may harass and kill a female weeks after a spawning if she cannot escape him. The fish are cover-oriented and territorial, defending a chosen crevice or hollow that will become the spawning site.
Breeding
Saxatilia pellegrini has, as far as the published record shows, never been bred in captivity, and its wild spawning has not been observed; the account that follows is the well-established pattern of its saxatilis-group relatives and should be read as genus-typical rather than as a description of this species. All pike cichlids are biparental substrate (cave) spawners. The female attaches a clutch of adhesive eggs — typically on the order of 300 to 400 in a saxatilis-group pike, each anchored to the surface by a short filament — to the wall or ceiling of a cave, a crevice between rocks, or a hollow in driftwood. Both parents tend the brood: the female concentrates on cleaning and fanning the eggs while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory. Hatching and the onset of free-swimming are comparatively quick in this group — the fry are typically free-swimming in about a week, sooner than in the larger lugubris pikes — and the young are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp, growing rapidly thereafter. Parental care can break down once the male begins to harass the female some weeks after spawning, after which the brood may be guarded loosely or eventually eaten if the pair cannot be kept stable.
In the aquarium
Saxatilia pellegrini is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is a small-range Aripuanã endemic that is not commercially collected for the trade, there is no established common name for it, and there is no published account of it being kept or spawned. What follows is therefore the husbandry that applies to mid-sized spangled pikes of the saxatilis group in general — the practical experience of keepers such as Vinny Kutty — offered as the best available guide should wild stock ever appear, not as a tested protocol for this particular fish.
The saxatilis-group pikes are widely regarded as among the hardiest and most adaptable of all Crenicichla, with husbandry needs that an experienced keeper of large Central American cichlids would recognise. A single mid-sized pike or a pair needs a tank of at least four feet in length; anything smaller turns the pair-bonding process into a body count, because unpaired conspecifics and rivals are attacked relentlessly. A footprint of roughly 47 in (about 55 US gal) is the realistic floor for a pair, and more length is always better for managing aggression and giving a harassed female room to flee. The tank should be furnished with abundant cover — driftwood, rock work, and lengths of PVC pipe (unsightly but invaluable for sheltering subordinate fish and as potential spawning caves). A fine sand or smooth gravel substrate suits the fish, and a secure lid is essential, as pikes jump.
Water chemistry is forgiving. Although the wild Aripuanã is soft, warm and acidic to near-neutral, saxatilis-group pikes thrive and spawn across a broad range and do not require blackwater conditions; treated tap water of moderate hardness and a temperature in the high-20s Celsius (roughly 79–86 °F) is appropriate, with pH best kept near neutral and extreme values avoided. Good filtration and regular generous water changes keep them in condition, and a large water change is itself a common spawning trigger. Diet is straightforward for a predator: wild-caught or young fish are conditioned on live and frozen foods — earthworms, shrimp, insect larvae and the like — and most individuals can in time be weaned onto sinking pellets, though this can take patience and adult wild fish are often reluctant. Feeder goldfish are best avoided as a disease risk.
Tankmate selection is the crux. Outside of breeding these pikes coexist with robust, similarly sized fish and generally leave other cichlid genera alone, while bullying their own kind; suitable companions are sturdy dither and target fish (large tetras such as red-hook silver dollars) and peaceful medium cichlids that are too large to be swallowed. Anything small enough to fit in a pike's mouth will be eaten. When a pair spawns, tolerance evaporates and other cichlids should be removed for their safety. This is a fish for an aquarist who enjoys managing intelligent, predatory, territorial cichlids rather than a community-tank candidate.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Saxatilia pellegrini as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018, published 2022 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio). The population trend is listed as unknown, and the species is recorded only from Brazil. Despite its naturally restricted range in the upper Aripuanã, it was judged Least Concern rather than threatened — pike cichlids of this group are resilient and the species is not targeted by any fishery. The assessment does flag pressures on its watershed, chiefly dams and water management together with other ecosystem modifications: the Madeira basin as a whole has been a focus of major hydroelectric development, and damming, deforestation and changes to the flood regime are the kinds of disturbance most likely to affect a narrow-range endemic of a single Shield tributary. For now those remain background pressures rather than a documented decline. The species carries no CITES or CMS listing.
