One of the newest eartheaters in the hobby — an undescribed redhump-group cichlid discovered in Colombia in 2016 and traded as the gold dust eartheater for the metallic spangling scattered across its flanks. It carries the name of the upper Río Sinú, yet the best published collection account places it in a small clear-water tributary of the Río Cauca that merely shares the name — a geographic riddle only a formal description will settle. Like its close relatives Geophagus steindachneri and G. pellegrini, it is an immediate maternal mouthbrooder, and captive-bred fish now circulate in Europe and North America.

Taxonomy & naming

This fish has no scientific name yet. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists 45 species-group names in Geophagus, and none of them ties to this form: no eartheater has been described from Colombia's Caribbean-slope drainages since Geophagus steindachneri Eigenmann & Hildebrand 1910, and hobby authorities uniformly treat the Alto Sinú fish as undescribed. It belongs to the redhump group — the small cluster of immediate mouthbrooders comprising G. steindachneri, G. crassilabris Steindachner 1876 of Panama, and G. pellegrini Regan 1912 of Colombia's Pacific slope. That group sits in 'Geophagus' only loosely: Kullander's 1986 revision restricted Geophagus in the strict sense to the Amazonian surinamensis lineage, and molecular phylogenies of the geophagine radiation recover the redhump species on their own branch, so when this fish is finally described it may well leave Geophagus altogether. It entered the hobby after French aquarists collected it in 2016, and the German aquarium literature — notably Uwe Werner's account in DCG-Informationen 9/2023 — has carried the most detailed coverage since. Traders sell it as the gold dust eartheater or gold dust geo; all these names label the same single import line, and aquarists consistently distinguish it from G. steindachneri by colour and pattern.

Morphology

A typical redhump eartheater in build: a laterally compressed, moderately deep body with the steeply sloped forehead of the group, large eyes set high, and the protrusible, underslung mouth of a substrate-sifter. Hobby literature puts the redhump species at 6–8 in, with this form topping out near the upper end of that range for old males and most aquarium fish staying smaller; traded specimens are already sexually mature at 3–3.5 in. What sets it apart — and named it — is the flank colour: dense rows of metallic gold-to-brass spangles over a warm base, a 'gold dust' effect Aquarium Glaser calls particularly splendid even by redhump standards. Mature males grow noticeably larger than females and develop the fleshy nuchal hump that gives the group its common name, along with more red and more intense spangling in the fins. Keepers report a changeable working pattern: fish can switch a dark lateral stripe on and off within moments, and at night some individuals show prominent dark vertical bars — mood dress worth knowing before it is mistaken for illness.

Habitat

The locality behind this fish is a genuine riddle. The trade name points to the Alto Sinú — the upper Río Sinú of Córdoba, the mountain reach above the Urrá reservoir. But the most detailed collection account — Uwe Werner's 2023 report in DCG-Informationen, as summarized by Aquarium Glaser and relayed in hobby channels — places the collecting site in the drainage of the Río Cauca: a small, clear-water, left-bank tributary that also carries the Sinú name — reported as the Río Verde del Sinú — flowing mostly through pastureland at modest elevation. Water there is described as close to neutral in pH and, thanks to the altitude, cooler than Colombia's lowland rivers at roughly 75–79 °F. Either way the fish is a resident of the Magdalena–Sinú freshwater ecoregion, and either way it lives in redhump country: Geophagus steindachneri, whose own type locality is the Río Cauca near Cáceres, ranges across the Magdalena, Cauca, and Sinú basins. Until a formal description publishes verified localities, the honest reading is that "Alto Sinú" is a label, not a map reference. Expect a fish of shallow, structured river margins over sand and fine gravel, the substrate its feeding method requires.

Feeding

An eartheater in the literal sense. Like all its relatives it feeds by taking mouthfuls of sand and fine sediment, winnowing them across the gill arches, and spitting the tailings while swallowing whatever edible fraction the sieve retains — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and organic detritus. In practice that makes it a benthophagous omnivore rather than a picky specialist. Aquarium fish accept nearly everything: sinking granules and small cichlid pellets, flake, and frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Mysis, and krill. Feed the way the fish forages — several modest portions a day of foods small enough to be processed through the sift, rather than one large meal — and let some food reach the sand so the fish can work for it. A tank without fine substrate frustrates the defining behaviour of the whole genus; with it, a group will plough the bottom methodically for hours, keeping the sand turned and clean.

Mating

Breeding follows the redhump playbook: polygynous, with no pair bond. A dominant male stakes a loose territory over open sand, and his hump, size, and intensified gold spangling do the advertising; females visit only to spawn and carry the brood alone afterwards. Temperament around all this is the most contradictory part of the fish's reputation — Aquarium Glaser notes that some keepers describe males as extremely aggressive at times while others call the same fish lamb-like, and both reports appear to be true of different individuals. The practical structure is the one used for Geophagus steindachneri: one male with several females so courtship pressure is divided, or a group of three or more males in a genuinely large tank where no single fish can dominate the whole floor. Sub-dominant males in tight quarters are the usual casualties.

Breeding

An immediate (ovophilous) maternal mouthbrooder, like the rest of the redhump group — the female picks the eggs up as they are laid rather than tending a substrate clutch. Reported clutches run to roughly 60 eggs. Incubation takes around two to three weeks, and after first release the female continues to shelter the fry in her mouth for a further week or more, taking them back at dusk and at any sign of threat. Fry are large enough at release to take Artemia nauplii and crushed dry food straight away. First-time mothers commonly swallow or abandon early broods; experienced females become reliable. Breeding needs no special trigger beyond good condition, warmth, and a calm tank — this fish spawns readily, which is exactly why captive-bred stock established quickly: German-bred juveniles were already circulating in the trade within a few years of the 2016 discovery, and most fish sold today are captive-bred rather than wild imports.

In the aquarium

A rewarding, moderately easy eartheater whose premium price reflects rarity, not difficulty. Give a male and his female group a footprint of at least 47 in and roughly 240 l or more; multi-male groups need substantially more floor. The non-negotiable item is several centimetres of fine sand — these fish burrow heavily at times, so choose rooted plants carefully or attach them to hardscape, and build stable rock or wood structure that sifting cannot undermine. Water is forgiving across 72–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5 in soft to moderately hard water; what matters more is cleanliness, since constant substrate-sifting punishes lazy maintenance — generous regular water changes and good flow over the sand keep the tank and the fish in shape. Tankmates should be medium-sized and either midwater or armoured: larger tetras, other geophagines, and peaceful catfish work; anything small enough to swallow, and short-tempered Central American cichlids, do not. Expect individual personality — the same species yields both mild and genuinely scrappy males — and have a fallback plan if a male turns out to be one of the scrappy ones.

Conservation

As an undescribed form it has no IUCN assessment and cannot receive one until it has a name — its conservation status is simply unknown, which for a fish with a seemingly small range is not a comfortable place to be. The basins it comes from are under real pressure. The Magdalena–Sinú ecoregion drains some of Colombia's most densely settled country. The lower Río Cauca — the drainage Werner's account points to — is the centre of Colombia's informal alluvial gold mining, with the mercury contamination and riverbed disturbance that trade brings, and its flow regime is now shaped by the Hidroituango dam upstream; the Río Sinú, the other candidate drainage, has been regulated by the Urrá dam since 2000. A localized, undescribed species in either basin runs the familiar risk of becoming threatened before science formally notices it exists. The hobby's early success with captive breeding is the bright spot: most fish in the trade are tank-raised, collection pressure on wild stocks is correspondingly low, and a documented aquarium population is quietly valuable insurance for a fish the literature has not yet caught up with.
