Gymnogeophagus lacustris is a small subtropical eartheater found nowhere on Earth but the sandy coastal lagoons of the Tramandaí river system in northern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A member of the bare-headed Gymnogeophagus eartheaters — fishes of cool, seasonal southern waters rather than the warm Amazon — it is a sand-bottom lagoon specialist that avoids the rocky, weedy habitats favoured by its close relatives. Its specific name means 'of lakes,' and that single word captures both its biology and its predicament: a lake-bound fish confined to one narrow strip of coast, now listed as Near Threatened.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnogeophagus lacustris was described in 1988 by the Brazilian ichthyologists Roberto E. Reis and Luiz R. Malabarba, in the Revista Brasileira de Zoologia. The holotype (MZUSP 28462, in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo) was taken from the canal connecting Lagoa da Cerquinha and Lagoa da Rondinha at Pinhal, in the Tramandaí drainage of Rio Grande do Sul — a type locality that fixes the species firmly in the coastal-lagoon country it never leaves. A substantial paratype series is distributed among Brazilian and international collections (MCP, USNM, NRM and others). No synonyms have ever been proposed; the name has been treated as valid in every subsequent checklist, including Kullander's 2003 treatment of South American cichlids and Malabarba et al. (2015). Within the eartheater subfamily Geophaginae (tribe Geophagini), the genus Gymnogeophagus is distinguished from the closely related Geophagus by, among other features, a naked (scaleless) dorsal surface of the head — the trait that gives the genus its name. Gymnogeophagus lacustris belongs to a tight group of southern species and is the sister taxon of the thick-lipped Gymnogeophagus labiatus. The boundary between the two has proved unusually slippery: Reis and Malabarba originally separated them mainly on lip morphology, but later molecular and morphometric work (de Almeida et al. 2021; and a ddRADseq population-genomics study by Turcati and colleagues) showed that hypertrophied lips are a plastic, ecologically driven trait of little diagnostic value, and that the populations of the Tramandaí–Mampituba ecoregion form an independent evolutionary lineage corresponding to Gymnogeophagus lacustris, with Gymnogeophagus labiatus largely confined to the Patos Lagoon system. The species pair is now read as a textbook case of hydrographic isolation driving speciation along Brazil's southern coast.

Morphology

Gymnogeophagus lacustris is a small, moderately deep-bodied eartheater. FishBase gives a maximum length of about 5.5 in standard length, and aquarium and field specimens are typically smaller still, in the 4–5 in range — a modest fish by the standards of the larger Geophagus. The body plan is the classic Gymnogeophagus profile: a laterally compressed oval body, a steep forehead, a small subterminal mouth set for picking at the bottom, and the diagnostic scaleless ('naked') crown that separates the genus from Geophagus. Coloration is an olive-to-brassy ground broken by iridescent blue-green speckling and rows of pearly spots along the flanks and unpaired fins, with a dark lateral blotch typical of the genus. The sexes are strongly dimorphic only in the breeding season. Dominant, reproductively active males develop a pronounced fleshy hump (a nuchal swelling) over the front of the head used in display, grow noticeably larger, intensify their colours, and carry more pointed, elongated dorsal- and anal-fin tips; ripe females stay plainer, smaller and deeper-bellied. Unlike its sister species Gymnogeophagus labiatus, Gymnogeophagus lacustris does not develop the conspicuous fleshy lips — and the lip trait, once thought diagnostic, is now known to vary too much within both species to separate them reliably.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the coastal-lagoon system of the Tramandaí river basin in northern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, within the Tramandaí–Mampituba freshwater ecoregion — a narrow band of low-lying country pressed between the Atlantic and the coastal escarpment. Reis & Malabarba's original description, cited by Weidner, ties the species to the canal linking Lagoa da Cerquinha and Lagoa da Rondinha near the town of Pinhal, Tramandaí — the type locality — and to a small cluster of confirmed sites clustered around it: the Rio Maquini, the mouth of the Rio Cornílios, the Lagoa dos Quadros near Cornílios, and the Lagoa da Cerquinha itself, all drawn from a run of local faunal surveys through the 1980s. Reported occurrences for the upper rio Uruguai and for the cities of Porto Alegre and Caxias do Sul are regarded by the IUCN assessors as misidentifications; the confirmed range is genuinely tiny, yielding an extent of occurrence below about 2,541 mi². Within that range Gymnogeophagus lacustris is a lentic, sand-bottom specialist. It lives in the still water of the coastal lagoons (lagoas) over open sandy floors, showing a clear preference for areas with little or no submerged and emergent vegetation — exactly the opposite of the rocky, structured habitats its sister Gymnogeophagus labiatus occupies in the basin's rivers. This sandy-lagoon habit is so consistent that it underpins the species' name and most of its ecology. As a subtropical southern fish it experiences a strongly seasonal thermal regime: regional Gymnogeophagus waters swing from the mid-teens Celsius in winter to the high twenties in summer, a far cooler and more variable envelope than tropical eartheaters tolerate. Water in these coastal lagoons is generally soft and near-neutral. The lagoons are shallow, and the fish is a creature of the upper few metres of the water column over sand.

Feeding

Like all eartheaters, Gymnogeophagus lacustris is a benthic sifter: it takes mouthfuls of the sandy lagoon floor, sorts edible particles from sediment in the mouth and gill chamber, and expels the cleaned grit — the winnowing feeding mode that defines the geophagine cichlids. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.4, consistent with an omnivore that works the bottom for small invertebrates (insect larvae, microcrustaceans and other benthos) together with detritus and associated organic material. The genus as a whole is unfussy and opportunistic, and congeners are reported to feed up into the water column as well as on the substrate. In its lagoon community the species fills the role of a small benthic forager of the open sand zone, a niche that dovetails with its habitat preference: by specialising on bare sandy bottoms it sidesteps the rock-associated feeding of its thick-lipped sister species, whose hypertrophied lips are an adaptation for foraging among stones.

Mating

Reproduction reorganises the social structure around displaying males. In the breeding season dominant males develop the swollen nuchal hump and heightened colour described above and become territorial, courting females over the open sand. Pair formation in Gymnogeophagus is the prelude to spawning, with the female taking the leading role in tending the clutch while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory against intruders regardless of their size — a pattern documented across the genus. Sexual selection on male ornament (the head hump and intensified nuptial colours) is pronounced, which is part of why nuptial-male coloration has been used, alongside genetics and morphometrics, to tease apart the Gymnogeophagus lacustris / Gymnogeophagus labiatus complex. The detailed wild courtship of Gymnogeophagus lacustris specifically has not been described at length in the literature; what is reported follows the genus template of male display, female-led brood tending, and vigorous joint territory defence.

Breeding

Gymnogeophagus lacustris is a delayed (larvophilous) mouthbrooder — FishBase classifies it explicitly as a larvophile mouthbrooder, and de Almeida et al. (2021) describe both members of the species pair as oral incubators. In this mode the pair first spawns on the substrate, as substrate-brooding cichlids do, and the parents guard the eggs in the open for a period; only after the eggs hatch (or near hatching) are the larvae taken up into the mouth and brooded orally until the fry are ready to be released. This two-stage, delayed mouthbrooding is the hallmark of the more derived Gymnogeophagus species and sets Gymnogeophagus lacustris apart from genus members such as Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus and Gymnogeophagus meridionalis, which remain straightforward substrate spawners that never take eggs or larvae into the mouth. Clutch sizes have not been precisely published for Gymnogeophagus lacustris; for the genus, substrate-spawning congeners lay on the order of a few hundred eggs, and the buccal volume of a mouthbrooder of this size constrains the held brood to a correspondingly modest number. Parental care is performed chiefly by the female, who carries and protects the developing young, while the male defends the territory; spawning is seasonal, concentrated in the warmer months as water temperatures rise.

In the aquarium

Gymnogeophagus lacustris is rarely seen in the hobby — it is a narrow-range endemic that is not commercially traded in any volume — but its needs are well understood from experience with the genus, and keepers of southern eartheaters such as Gymnogeophagus meridionalis, Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus and Gymnogeophagus labiatus offer a reliable template. The single most important and most commonly abused parameter is temperature. These are subtropical fish, not tropical ones, and the genus does best on a seasonal room-temperature regime — roughly the high teens Celsius in winter rising to the mid-to-high twenties in summer — rather than the steady 79–82 °F suited to Amazonian eartheaters. Chronically warm water is a classic husbandry error and a documented stress factor. A planted, sandy-floored tank suits the species' biology: fine sand is essential for natural sifting behaviour, and because Gymnogeophagus lacustris is specifically an open-sand lagoon fish, a generous expanse of bare substrate matters more than dense décor.

Water should be kept soft to moderately hard and close to neutral (around pH 7), the conditions of its coastal lagoons. Experienced Gymnogeophagus keepers stress water quality: high temperature, low pH and elevated nitrate are each linked to outbreaks of 'bloat' (a Malawi-bloat-like gut condition that the genus is prone to), so steady weekly water changes and keeping nitrate low are prudent. Diet is easy — the genus accepts live, frozen and prepared foods readily; a varied menu emphasising small invertebrates, shrimp and some plant matter, offered as sinking foods over the sand, keeps fish in condition.

Behaviourally, expect a small but assertive cichlid. Gymnogeophagus males are territorial even outside the breeding season, and females are not especially mild either, so a roomy tank with sightline breaks and cover lets subordinate and smaller fish escape. Tankmates should be similarly cool-tolerant subtropical species; the common mistake is housing them with warm-water tropicals whose temperature needs are simply incompatible. Given its conservation status and rarity in the trade, any aquarium stock should be captive-bred and the species treated as one to maintain and propagate responsibly rather than collect.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Gymnogeophagus lacustris as Near Threatened (criterion B1b(iii)), assessed on 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in the 2022 assessment, with a population trend recorded as decreasing. The basis for the listing is the species' extreme range restriction: it is endemic to the coastal-lagoon system of one drainage in northern Rio Grande do Sul, with confirmed records yielding an extent of occurrence below about 2,541 mi² (records from the upper Uruguai and the Porto Alegre / Caxias do Sul area are treated as misidentifications). It carries no CITES or CMS listing. A range this small leaves little margin for error: the coastal lagoons of Rio Grande do Sul lie in a heavily settled, agriculturally developed and tourism-pressured coastal strip, and the assessment's continuing-decline qualifier (the 'iii' in the B1b criterion) points to ongoing degradation of habitat quality. The lagoon-specialist, sandy-bottom, low-vegetation niche that makes Gymnogeophagus lacustris distinctive also makes it sensitive to habitat alteration, eutrophication and shoreline modification. As a single-system endemic with a declining trend, it is a fish whose long-term survival depends on the health of a very particular and very limited stretch of southern Brazilian coast.
