Taxonomy & naming
Gymnogeophagus constellatus was described in 2015 by Luiz R. Malabarba, Maria Cláudia Malabarba and Roberto E. Reis in Neotropical Ichthyology, in a paper that erected five new species at once from the middle and upper tributaries of the rio Uruguay drainage and the rio Negro. The genus Gymnogeophagus, raised by Miranda Ribeiro in 1918, is diagnosed by two derived skeletal features — the complete absence of supraneural bones and the presence of a forward-directed spine on the first dorsal-fin pterygiophore — and is restricted to the subtropical Paraguay, Paraná and Uruguay drainages plus the coastal rivers of Uruguay and southern Brazil. Within the genus, constellatus belongs to the "gymnogenys complex," a clade of larvophilic mouthbrooders centred on Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys (Hensel, 1870) that had long been a taxonomic snarl: molecular work by Wimberger and colleagues in 1998 flagged several undescribed lineages in it, and the 2015 revision finally put names to them, constellatus among them. The holotype (MCP 10499), a 4.5 in SL male, was collected in 1985 from the rio Conceição at Ijuí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, by C. Porto da Silva and M. F. Korndorfer; a large series of paratypes spans the rio Ijuí basin. The species epithet is a Latin adjective, constellatus, "studded with stars," chosen for the arrangement of bright white spots in the dorsolateral region of the body. Two years after the description, Říčan and colleagues (2017) reported the species for the first time from Argentina, in the Chimiray-Miní and Itacaruaré rivers of Misiones, extending its known range across the international border.
Morphology
This is a modest-sized eartheater: FishBase lists a maximum of 5.5 in standard length, and the largest measured type specimen was a 5.5 in SL fish, so adults are realistically in the 4–5.5 in range. The body is comparatively deep and laterally compressed, with a convex head profile; mature males develop the genus-typical fleshy nuchal hump (an adipose-looking swelling on the forehead) and draw the soft dorsal and anal fins out to points, the fourth or fifth dorsal ray extending toward the caudal. The single diagnostic feature — and the reason for the name — is an unusually large midlateral spot in which each scale bears one big white dot. In adult males this dark spot is roughly four to five scales wide and four scales tall and climbs almost to the dorsal-fin base, far higher than the two-to-three-scale gap left in every other Gymnogeophagus; in females and juveniles the spot is still large but usually stops at the upper lateral line. The species also runs a higher upper-lateral-line scale count (18–21, usually 18–20) than its congeners (13–19). In life, males are olivaceous above with longitudinal rows of bright spots, a yellowish-green head marked with a few red flecks and many small light-blue spots below the eye, yellow lower flanks, and a red dorsal and anal fin spangled and striped with white; eight to thirteen faint double vertical bars cross the body. Females wear the same pattern in a much paler key, browner below and with a smaller midlateral spot. Sexual dimorphism is therefore clear: males are larger, more intensely coloured, humped, and pointed-finned, with the spot reaching the dorsal base.
Habitat
Gymnogeophagus constellatus is a narrow-range endemic of the middle rio Uruguay basin. The type series comes entirely from the rio Ijuí and its tributaries in the eastern part of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil — drainages such as the rio Conceição, rio Potiribu and rio Ijuizinho and their feeder creeks. The 2017 Argentine record adds the Chimiray-Miní and Itacaruaré rivers of Misiones, at the same latitude on the far bank of the Uruguay. In the Freshwater Ecoregions of the World scheme these waters fall in the Lower Uruguay ecoregion, the section of the river running from the Yucumã Falls downstream, of which the Ijuí is a named tributary. These are clear to lightly stained subtropical rivers and streams over rock and sand. Crucially for keepers, the genus is defined by its climate as much as its range: these are seasonal, cool-temperate-to-subtropical waters, not equatorial ones. The original description does not tabulate in-situ chemistry, and FishBase carries no temperature, pH or depth figures for the species, but trade-side observation (Aquarium Glaser) notes that habitat temperatures fall below about 57 °F in the cool season — the cue that later triggers spawning. No published depth band exists for this small-river fish; it is a shallow-water inhabitant of streams and river margins rather than a deep-living species, and the depth has simply not been measured.
Feeding
Like all eartheaters, Gymnogeophagus constellatus is a benthic sifter: it takes mouthfuls of sand and fine sediment, sorts edible invertebrates, larvae and organic particles from the grit in the pharyngeal mill, and expels the cleaned substrate through the gills and mouth. Its dentition fits this guild — small conical jaw teeth in bands, and a broad lower pharyngeal plate whose posteromedial teeth are enlarged and blunt-cusped, of molariform aspect, well suited to crushing small hard-bodied prey. FishBase estimates a trophic level around 3.4, placing it as a benthic invertivore that also takes some larger or harder items rather than a pure detritivore. No dedicated wild gut-content study has been published for the species; the picture is inferred from its anatomy and from the well-studied feeding of its congeners. In the aquarium it is an unfussy feeder that accepts standard ornamental foods of suitable size, which is consistent with the opportunistic bottom-foraging of the genus.
Mating
Detailed courtship has not been documented in the wild for Gymnogeophagus constellatus specifically, so its mating system is read from the gymnogenys complex it belongs to and from aquarium observation of the genus. These are polygynous, harem-leaning mouthbrooders: a dominant male holds court over a group of females and is, by trade accounts, frequently quite aggressive, which is why keepers are advised to run one male to three or more females in a roomy tank rather than a simple pair. Reproduction is keyed to the seasons. Spawning behaviour begins when the water warms back up after the cool season — around 61 °F by hobbyist report — so the cold winter that the fish need is also the reset that primes the next breeding cycle. Pair formation and spawning take place over a chosen substrate patch, after which the parental roles diverge sharply in the mouthbrooding manner described below. The seasonal trigger is the single most important fact about how this fish reproduces, and the reason it cannot simply be bred on demand in constant tropical conditions.
Breeding
Gymnogeophagus constellatus is a larvophilic (larva-stage) mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode that unites the gymnogenys complex and distinguishes it from the open-brooding members of the genus. In this strategy — best documented in the closely allied Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys — the female deposits her eggs on a stone or similar substrate surface and may cover or guard the clutch, and only after the eggs have developed for several days does she take the larvae (or eggs nearly ready to hatch) into her buccal cavity to incubate and protect them; the delay before pickup depends on temperature. This is a delayed, female-led form of oral incubation, quite unlike the immediate egg-snapping of many African mouthbrooders. Specific clutch counts for constellatus have not been published; in the small-bodied gymnogenys-group mouthbrooders the broods are correspondingly modest rather than the hundreds laid by large substrate-spawners. Parental care is essentially maternal once the larvae are in the mouth, with the female carrying and then guarding free-swimming fry. Captive breeding succeeds only when the seasonal cycle is honoured: a genuine cool period followed by a spring warm-up to roughly 61 °F is what brings the fish into condition, and keepers who maintain constant tropical temperatures typically enjoy easy early spawnings and then lose the stock within a few years.
In the aquarium
Gymnogeophagus constellatus reached the hobby only after its 2015 description and is imported in small numbers, largely from Argentine collections; it is a fish for the experienced keeper rather than a beginner, not because it is delicate day to day but because it demands something most aquaria never provide — a seasonal climate. As a subtropical species it cannot be kept long-term in a warm, year-round-stable tropical tank; without a real annual rhythm of cooling and rewarming, stocks that breed readily at first tend to dwindle and die out over a few years. The practical regime is to let the tank track room temperature through the year, allowing it to fall into the low teens Celsius (down toward 57 °F) in winter and warm back into the low-to-mid 20s in summer, which doubles as the spawning trigger near 61 °F.
Water chemistry itself is forgiving: the genus is not demanding about pH or hardness, and trade experience holds that ordinary tap water is suitable for both maintenance and breeding, so a near-neutral to slightly hard supply (roughly pH 6.5–7.5) is fine. The non-negotiable water-quality issue is nitrate. Gymnogeophagus are notably sensitive to it: levels as low as about 90 mg/L can damage juveniles, and from around 110 mg/L even adults become disease-prone. That makes generous filtration, a fine sand substrate the fish can sift without gill abrasion, and large regular water changes the core of good husbandry. Provide a sand bed, some rockwork or wood for sightline breaks and spawning sites, and open swimming room.
Stocking should account for male aggression: keep one male with several females (a harem of three or more) in a tank large enough — on the order of a 30-gallon footprint at minimum for a small group, more if the male is pushy — so subordinate fish can keep their distance. Tankmates should be other subtropical or cool-tolerant fishes that share the seasonal regime; warm-water tropicals are a poor match for the temperatures this species needs. Feeding is straightforward, as the fish takes standard prepared and frozen foods of appropriate size. The recurring mistakes keepers make are all variations on one theme: treating a subtropical seasonal cichlid as a tropical one, and letting nitrate creep up.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Gymnogeophagus constellatus as Least Concern (assessed and published in 2023 by E. Fernando of the IUCN Freshwater Biodiversity Assessment team), with the population trend recorded as unknown. The listing notes occurrence in the rio Ijuí and its tributaries in the middle Uruguay of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, reaching into the Chimiray-Miní and Itacaruaré rivers of Misiones, Argentina. The describing authors had reached the same conclusion in 2015: although the species' extent of occurrence is small — on the order of 2,300 square kilometres — and hydroelectric dams already exist in the Ijuí basin, they detected no specific population-level threats and judged it relatively frequent and abundant in its range. The species carries no CITES listing. The honest caveat is that constellatus is a narrow-range endemic of a single basin that is already dammed, so it has far less buffer than the wide-ranging Amazonian eartheaters; further river impoundment, flow alteration and habitat degradation in the middle Uruguay are the pressures most relevant to its long-term status, even though none is documented as an active threat today.
