Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis heusinkveldi was described by the Dutch ichthyologists Frans Witte and E.L.M. (Els) Witte-Maas in 1987, in a monographic chapter titled 'Implications for taxonomy and functional morphology of intraspecific variation in Haplochromine cichlids of Lake Victoria with descriptions of five zooplanktivorous species' — part of Witte's Leiden doctoral work 'From form to fishery.' The holotype (RMNH 30727) and a series of paratypes (RMNH 30602, 30700–30729; thirty specimens in all) are held in the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden, and were collected in the northern part of the Mwanza Gulf, Lake Victoria, Tanzania, at a depth of 23–43 ft. The species sits in the tribe Haplochromini and was placed in the catch-all genus Haplochromis as understood by the Leiden HEST (Haplochromis Ecological Survey Team) school of van Oijen, Witte, Barel and colleagues. That broad Haplochromis is widely recognized as an artificial assemblage: as the Lake Victoria flock has been studied, many of its zooplanktivorous members have been shuffled toward genera such as Yssichromis and Prognathochromis, and the generic limits of these slender, open-water haplochromines remain genuinely unsettled. We retain the combination Haplochromis heusinkveldi because that is the valid name carried by the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase; no formal reassignment to another genus has been published for this species. The name has not entered the aquarium trade, and the fish carries no established English common name.
Morphology
This is a small haplochromine: FishBase gives a maximum of 3 in standard length, and like its zooplanktivorous relatives in the 1987 description it is a slender, laterally compressed, fairly shallow-bodied fish built for life in open water rather than for grazing rock or sifting sand. The closely allied zooplanktivores described alongside it run to body depths of roughly 26–31% of standard length, with comparatively large eyes and a short snout — the visual, midwater hunter's build. Coloration in life follows the pattern of the group: males in breeding condition are silvery with metallic sheens and the orange or yellow anal-fin 'egg spots' (ocelli) that are central to haplochromine courtship, while females and non-breeding fish are a plainer silvery-grey. The detailed counts and the precise diagnostic combination of characters that separate Haplochromis heusinkveldi from the other four species in the same paper are given only in the original monograph; because no live aquarium population exists, descriptions of its coloration rest on preserved type material and the HEST collections rather than on photographs of healthy living fish.
Habitat
Haplochromis heusinkveldi is endemic to Lake Victoria, the vast, shallow East African Rift lake shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya; the type series and essentially all documented records come from the Mwanza Gulf in the Tanzanian (southern) part of the lake, and the IUCN assessment treats its range as Tanzanian. FishBase records it from exposed and sheltered areas with a mud bottom and gives a depth range of about 10–69 ft, with the type material taken at 23–43 ft — a sub-littoral, soft-bottom, open-water fish rather than an inhabitant of the rocky inshore. Lake Victoria water is warm and alkaline: surface temperatures generally run about 73–81 °F and pH is high, broadly in the range 7.2–9.0, with the lake's productivity and chemistry having shifted markedly through twentieth-century eutrophication. That eutrophication matters directly to this fish — increased turbidity is implicated in its decline, because the clear-water visual signals these haplochromines use to recognize mates and partition the habitat break down as the water clouds.
Feeding
Haplochromis heusinkveldi was described as one of a cluster of zooplanktivorous haplochromines — fish that hunt the small crustacean zooplankton (copepods, cladocerans) and other tiny invertebrates suspended in the open water of the gulf. Its slender body, large eyes and modest dentition are the functional-morphology signature of that guild, which Witte and his colleagues studied precisely to link jaw and body form to feeding habit. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.4, consistent with a small midwater invertivore rather than a piscivore or a bottom detritivore. In the pre-perch lake these zooplanktivores were enormously abundant, forming dense offshore shoals that were a major link transferring planktonic production up the food web to larger predators; the collapse of this guild was one of the most consequential changes in the lake's ecology.
Mating
No courtship or social behaviour has been documented for Haplochromis heusinkveldi specifically, and what can responsibly be said comes from the well-studied biology of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock to which it belongs. These are polygynous, lek-style breeders in which males develop bright nuptial colours and display the anal-fin egg spots to court females, with no lasting pair bond. Mate choice in this flock is strongly visual, and divergence in male coloration under different light environments is thought to have helped drive the explosive speciation that produced hundreds of species in a geologically young lake. The flip side of that visually mediated mate choice is fragility: where eutrophication has reduced water clarity, females can no longer reliably distinguish conspecific males, and reproductive isolation between species can collapse — a mechanism the IUCN flags as a hybridization threat to this species.
Breeding
Like virtually all members of the Lake Victoria flock, Haplochromis heusinkveldi is a maternal (female) mouthbrooder: the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth and incubates the developing young there, releasing free-swimming fry after a period of buccal brooding and providing no biparental nest care. The actual clutch size, brooding duration and fry development have not been published for this species; small Lake Victoria haplochromines of this size typically carry only modest broods, on the order of a few dozen eggs, which the female guards in her mouth — a low-fecundity, high-investment strategy that is one reason the flock recovered so unevenly after the perch invasion. FishBase notes only 'mouthbrooding by females' for Haplochromis heusinkveldi, and no spawning has been reported from captivity, so the specific figures remain genuinely undocumented.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis heusinkveldi is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It has never established itself in the hobby or the ornamental trade; it is known almost entirely from museum specimens and research trawls, and given its Critically Endangered status and the near-disappearance of its type population, it is not a fish a hobbyist can realistically obtain or should seek out. The note here is therefore an honest negative: there is no body of captive husbandry experience to draw on. If the broader biology of small Lake Victoria zooplanktivores is any guide, such a fish would in principle want a roomy tank with open swimming volume, warm (about 75–81 °F) hard, alkaline water (pH well above 7), strong filtration and bright lighting, and would be kept as a group dominated by one or two displaying males. But these are inferences from the guild, not tested recommendations for this species. Conservation-minded keepers interested in Lake Victoria haplochromines are far better served by the handful of flock members that are actually maintained in managed aquarium and zoo breeding programs.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis heusinkveldi as Critically Endangered (criterion C2a(ii)), assessed on 31 March 2010 by Witte, de Zeeuw and Brooks, with a decreasing population trend. The assessment identifies predation by the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus) as the principal threat — a pressure regarded as potentially reversible — together with the risk of hybridization driven by reduced water transparency, as eutrophication, erosion and sedimentation degrade the visual cues these fish rely on for mate recognition. The species is one of the many casualties of the Lake Victoria haplochromine collapse of the 1980s, when the booming Nile perch and accelerating eutrophication wiped out an estimated several hundred endemic cichlid species or pushed them to the brink. The Catalog of Fishes flatly records its status as 'extinct,' though the IUCN's 2010 listing as Critically Endangered (rather than Extinct) leaves open the possibility of surviving remnants. Some zooplanktivores of the gulf have resurged as Nile perch numbers fell to heavy fishing, but recovery has been highly uneven — closely studied relatives such as Haplochromis 'argens' remained extremely rare even decades later — and there is no published evidence of a meaningful recovery for Haplochromis heusinkveldi. It carries no CITES listing.
