Haplochromis howesi is a Lake Victoria haplochromine cichlid described by the Dutch ichthyologist Martien J. P. van Oijen in 1992, as part of the extensive taxonomic work documenting the lake's vast haplochromine flock carried out by Leiden-based researchers before and during the Nile-perch-driven collapse of the 1980s. Like a great many of its relatives, it is a narrow-range endemic whose long-term wild status is closely tied to the fate of Lake Victoria's water clarity and its introduced Nile perch population. The CARES Preservation Program lists it as Vulnerable.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis howesi was described by Martien J. P. van Oijen in 1992. Van Oijen, based at Naturalis (the National Museum of Natural History) in Leiden, was one of the principal taxonomists of the Haplochromis Ecology Survey Team (HEST), the Dutch-Tanzanian-Ugandan research programme that catalogued the ecology and diversity of Lake Victoria's haplochromine flock through the 1980s and 1990s, working closely with Frans Witte and other Leiden-based ichthyologists. The specific epithet honours a contemporary systematist surnamed Howes — most plausibly the British Museum (Natural History) ichthyologist G. J. Howes, who published on the anatomy and systematics of African haplochromine cichlids during the same period — though the precise dedication is not confirmed in the sources available for this article. As with the great majority of Lake Victoria's several hundred haplochromine species, howesi is retained within the broad genus Haplochromis by most modern treatments (including FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes), pending a complete phylogenetic revision of the flock, rather than being assigned to one of the many narrower genera erected for particular ecological guilds within it.
