Haplochromis latifasciatus is a Lake Victoria haplochromine cichlid described in 1929 by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan, extending the synoptic revision of the lake's cichlid fauna he had published seven years earlier. Its epithet, from Latin for 'broad-banded,' most plausibly points to a prominent bar or band in its colour pattern. Some later revisers placed the species in the satellite genus Astatotilapia, the combination under which the CARES Preservation Program lists it, though Catalog of Fishes currently retains it within the broad genus Haplochromis. CARES classifies it as Critically Endangered.
