Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis loati was described by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood in 1971, in a paper that paired it with a redescription of Haplochromis wingatii (Boulenger): 'On the cichlid fish Haplochromis wingatii (Blgr.), and a new species from the Nile and Lake Albert.' The holotype (Natural History Museum, London, BMNH 1938.1.13.1) was collected at Gondokoro, on the Bahr-el-Jebel (the stretch of the White Nile in what is now South Sudan), with a series of paratypes (BMNH 1966.9.13.12-21) taken in Uganda. The species belongs to the vast, taxonomically fluid genus Haplochromis, long used as a catch-all for the small haplochromine cichlids of the East African lakes and the Nile system. Greenwood himself spent much of his career trying to break this 'wastebin' genus into smaller, diagnosable groups, and in his 1979 revision of the Nilotic and other riverine haplochromines he and subsequent workers referred loati to the genus Thoracochromis Greenwood, 1979 — a placement the Cichlid Room Companion and several catalogues now follow. FishBase, the Catalog of Fishes and the IUCN still carry it under Haplochromis, and that combination is retained as the page heading here; readers should be aware that Thoracochromis loati is the same fish. As a Nilotic riverine haplochromine it is only distantly related to the famous species flocks of Lake Victoria, despite sharing the genus name. The epithet honours William Leonard Stevenson Loat (1871-1932), the British archaeologist and naturalist who superintended the survey party that first collected the species near Gondokoro around 1902.
Morphology
This is a very small cichlid: FishBase records a maximum of 2 in total length, and most measured specimens are smaller still, so loati is among the more diminutive members of its genus. In overall build it is a typical small haplochromine — a laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied fish with a single continuous dorsal fin, the conical to slightly tricuspid teeth of a generalist haplochromine, and the small-scaled body plan shared across the group. No colour photograph of a living specimen appears to be in general circulation; the species is known almost entirely from preserved museum material, and Greenwood's original account is the primary source for its diagnostic proportions and dentition. Live coloration is therefore not reliably documented in popular sources. Sexual dimorphism follows the haplochromine norm: females and non-breeding fish are the plainer sex, while breeding males develop the brighter nuptial colours and egg-spot-like markings on the anal fin that the group uses in courtship. Because so few live fish have been examined, the details of the male nuptial dress are not well described in the accessible literature.
Habitat
Haplochromis loati is confined to the upper White Nile system and Lake Albert, on the Uganda-Democratic Republic of the Congo border, extending downstream into the great Sudd swamps of South Sudan via the Bahr-el-Jebel. The IUCN records it from Sudan (the Sudd region) and Uganda (Lake Albert), and FishBase summarises the range as 'Nile (Bahr-el-Jebel at Gondokoro) and Lake Albert.' This places the species firmly in the Upper Nile freshwater ecoregion, which takes in the White Nile basin, the Bahr el Ghazal, Lake Albert and the Albert Nile. Rather than a rock- or sand-dwelling lake fish, loati is a creature of the vegetated margins: FishBase notes that it 'occupies the hyacinth fringe in Sudd lakes and moves into submerged vegetation during the flood,' tracking the seasonal flood pulse of the swamps into newly inundated marginal plant beds. These are warm, shallow, often poorly oxygenated floodplain and lacustrine waters; the broad chemistry of the Lake Albert / White Nile system runs warm (roughly 73–82 °F) and circumneutral to alkaline, with pH commonly in the 7-9 range typical of the East African Rift drainages, though no in-situ measurements specific to loati's microhabitat are published. As a shallow vegetation-dweller it lives within the upper few metres of the water column; no precise depth range has been recorded for the species.
Feeding
Haplochromis loati is an omnivore rather than a feeding specialist. FishBase, drawing on the survey literature of the Sudd, reports that it 'consumes algae, vegetable fragments, zooplankton, Caridina and insects' — a broad diet that spans plant material, small crustaceans (including the freshwater shrimp Caridina) and aquatic insects, and which FishBase translates into an estimated trophic level near 3.0. This generalist, vegetation-associated diet fits its habit of foraging through the hyacinth fringe and flooded plant beds, where algae, detritus, micro-invertebrates and small crustaceans are all abundant. In the community it occupies the role of a small, low-to-mid-trophic-level forager — the kind of abundant little haplochromine that both grazes the productive marginal vegetation and serves as forage for the larger predators of the Nile and Lake Albert, including the Nile perch (Lates) and tigerfish.
Mating
No direct behavioural study of courtship in Haplochromis loati has been published, so its mating system is inferred from its reproductive mode and from the well-documented behaviour of related Nilotic and lacustrine haplochromines. Like other maternal mouthbrooding haplochromines, it is expected to be polygynous: males court females using nuptial colour and fin display rather than forming lasting pair bonds, and fertilisation is followed by the female taking the eggs into her mouth. One field observation is suggestive — the Sudd survey data reported in FishBase note that males are about twice as numerous as females in samples, a skewed operational sex ratio consistent with the intense male-male competition seen in mouthbrooding haplochromines, where many males compete for the comparatively scarce receptive, brooding-ready females. Spawning is most plausibly tied to the flood pulse, when the fish move into freshly inundated vegetation.
Breeding
Haplochromis loati is a maternal (female) mouthbrooder: FishBase records 'mouthbrooding by females,' the reproductive strategy shared across the haplochromine cichlids of the Nile and the East African lakes. After spawning, the female collects the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there through hatching and the early larval stage, releasing free-swimming fry only once they can fend for themselves — a strategy that trades a small clutch for high per-offspring survival and frees the fish from any need for a fixed nest site, an advantage in the shifting, seasonally flooded swamp habitats it occupies. The specific fecundity of loati has not been published; in keeping with its very small body size (around 2 in), a clutch on the order of a few dozen eggs is genus-typical for small haplochromines of this size, but no measured egg count for this species is on record. Parental care is performed by the female alone, with no documented male involvement after spawning. The high resilience score FishBase assigns the species (population doubling time under fifteen months) reflects the rapid reproductive turnover expected of a small, early-maturing mouthbrooder.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis loati is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a small, plainly-coloured swamp haplochromine from a remote and politically difficult part of the upper Nile and Lake Albert, with no ornamental trade, no established captive population, and not even a colour photograph of a living specimen in common circulation. It does not appear in hobbyist price lists or club breeding programmes, and there is no body of keeping experience to draw on. Any husbandry advice can therefore only be extrapolated from its biology. Were a specimen ever to reach a tank, it would call for the conditions of its native water — warm (around 75–82 °F), hard, alkaline water (pH roughly 7.5-9), gentle filtration, and a heavily planted set-up with dense marginal and submerged vegetation that mimics the hyacinth fringe it inhabits in the wild. Given its tiny adult size it would suit a modest species or community tank of small, peaceful fishes rather than the large rift-lake cichlid aquaria associated with the genus name. A varied omnivore diet — small live and frozen foods alongside a good algae-based prepared food — would match its natural feeding. None of this has been tested in practice, and the honest summary is that this is a fish of scientific and ecological interest, not of the hobby.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis loati as Data Deficient (assessed 1 May 2009 by A. Getahun), meaning there is not enough information on its range, population and threats to assign a meaningful risk category. The assessment records the species from Lake Albert (Uganda) and the Bahr el Jebel / Sudd region (Sudan, now South Sudan), but notes how little is known of its biology, abundance or trends — a common situation for the small, taxonomically tangled haplochromines of the Nile system, many of which are known only from old museum series. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. While loati itself has no documented, species-specific threat, its habitat sits in a basin under real pressure: Lake Albert and the upper White Nile face heavy and growing fishing effort, oil development around Lake Albert, sedimentation and wetland conversion, and — across the wider Nile — the cascading ecological effects that introduced Nile perch had on native haplochromines elsewhere in the region. Whether loati is genuinely secure or quietly declining simply cannot be said on current evidence; resolving its status, and even its correct generic placement, would require fresh fieldwork in a region where such surveys are hard to mount.
