Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Edward — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Haplochromis oregosoma is a small, slender haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake George and the connecting Kazinga Channel in western Uganda, part of the Lake Edward system rather than Lake Victoria proper. Described by P. Humphry Greenwood in 1973, it is an offshore, open-water zooplankton-feeder that keeps to the upper layers above sand and mud bottoms. The IUCN lists it as Near Threatened, flagged for its very small range and the pollution that mining in the Kasese District could push into shallow, eutrophic Lake George.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis oregosoma was described by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood in 1973, in his monographic revision of the Haplochromis and related species of Lake George, Uganda (Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History) Zoology, volume 25, number 5, page 159, figure 8). The holotype (BMNH 1972.6.2.141) and its paratype series were collected by Greenwood and I.G. Dunn at the north end of Kankurunga Island in Lake George in May 1971, and remain in the Natural History Museum, London. The Catalog of Fishes lists the name as valid as originally combined, Haplochromis oregosoma Greenwood 1973, with no junior synonyms.

The genus name Haplochromis has long served as a holding pen for the explosively diverse haplochromine flocks of the East African lakes, and most of Greenwood's Lake George species have at various times been shuffled among the satellite genera he and later workers erected (Astatotilapia, Thoracochromis, Yssichromis, Psammochromis and others). Molecular work (Seehausen et al. 2003) places the whole Lake Victoria–Edward–George superflock on a single young branch derived from a Congolese–Nilotic Thoracochromis-like ancestor, which is why the modern literature increasingly assigns these fish to Astatotilapia or Thoracochromis. No formal recombination has been published for this species, so it is retained here under Haplochromis, the name under which it was described and under which FishBase, the Catalog of Fishes and the IUCN still list it. The Lakes Edward and George cichlids are close relatives of the Lake Victoria flock — the two faunas were connected within the last several thousand years — so oregosoma belongs to the broader Victoria-region radiation even though it has never lived in Lake Victoria itself.

Greenwood's revision placed oregosoma among sixteen Haplochromis species he recognized as part of the Lake George flock. The two-lake system it belongs to is far from fully documented: a table compiled from the wider Lake Edward–George cichlid fauna and cited by Konings lists at least sixty species known from the two lakes combined, of which only 29 had been formally described at the time — meaning well over thirty species awaiting description, most of them presumed to lie in the far less thoroughly surveyed Lake Edward itself.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of 3 in standard length, and the type and comparative material examined in later studies run from roughly 2–3.5 in SL, so an adult is a slim fish only a few centimetres long. The specific epithet is the key to the body plan: Greenwood coined oregosoma from the Greek orego, 'to stretch', and soma, 'body', in reference to the species' comparatively elongate, drawn-out form — a streamlined shape that suits an open-water life rather than the deeper-bodied build of rock- or shore-dwelling haplochromines. (Despite a superficial resemblance to the Greek oros, 'mountain', the name is not about a mountain or a deep body; the ETYFish Project records Greenwood's own 'rather elongate' intent.) In a comparative study of the pelagic haplochromines of the Lake Edward system, oregosoma is distinguished from its closest look-alikes by shallower lacrimal (suborbital) bones and a narrower interorbital region, and dominant males carry the warm, yellow-cheeked breeding dress typical of the group rather than the dark-grey or silver cheeks of some relatives. As with essentially all haplochromines, the sexes diverge at maturity: dominant males develop the bright nuptial coloration and the egg-spot-bearing anal fin used in spawning, while females and subordinate males stay drab and silvery — a difference of colour and behaviour rather than of size or shape. No detailed colour description of live wild fish has been published, a reflection of how few specimens have ever been studied.

Habitat

Haplochromis oregosoma is endemic to Lake George and the Kazinga Channel in western Uganda; the two lakes are joined by the 40-km Kazinga Channel and share much of their fish fauna. Most of Lake George's sixteen Haplochromis species also frequent the channel and enter Lake Edward itself, but oregosoma is one of the few exceptions: per Greenwood's account, it has not actually been recorded from Lake Edward, only from Lake George and the Kazinga Channel. Because the channel habitat is nearly identical to Lake George's, and closely resembles conditions near where the channel empties into Lake Edward, Konings judged it reasonable to expect the species there too — but that remains an inference, not a confirmed record, and the profile treats Lake Edward occurrence as unconfirmed accordingly. Within this small system it is an offshore, open-water fish: FishBase records it as benthopelagic, inhabiting offshore areas over both sand and mud substrates, and the IUCN assessment notes it is 'apparently confined to offshore areas.' Later sampling of the Lake Edward system found pelagic haplochromines of this group in the upper water layers of sublittoral and deeper regions, away from the shoreline.

The water body itself is unusual. Lake George straddles the equator at about 0–1°S, is very shallow (mean depth only about 8 ft, area roughly 155 mi²), and is ringed by one of the largest papyrus swamps in East Africa. It is a permanently eutrophic, blue-green-algae-rich lake with a famously stable physico-chemical regime: warm water that runs roughly 77–95 °F through a daily cycle, alkaline pH that swings from near 7 up toward 9 as dense daytime photosynthesis strips carbon dioxide from the surface, and a dramatic diurnal oxygen rhythm driven by the standing crop of phytoplankton. These are warm, well-mixed, productive shallows — a very different setting from the deep, clear rift lakes, and a backdrop that explains the open-water, plankton-feeding lifestyle of fish like oregosoma. In-situ chemistry specific to this species has not been published; the figures above are lake-wide measurements from the limnological literature on Lake George.

Feeding

Haplochromis oregosoma is a planktivore of the open water. The IUCN assessment, drawing on the few specimens examined, reports that it 'appears to feed mainly on phytoplankton,' and FishBase's modelled trophic level of about 3.3 is consistent with a small fish taking suspended plankton and the invertebrates that graze it. Gut contents of Greenwood's Lake George specimens and of related pelagic haplochromines from the Lake Edward system contained zooplankton — copepods and cladocerans — together with midge larvae, pupae and emerging adults, with the zooplankton and midges often found in separate parts of the gut, suggesting the fish switch prey on a daily rhythm as different food becomes available through the day and night. In Lake George's perpetually plankton-laden water this is an abundant and reliable food supply, and a slim, mid-water zooplanktivore is well placed to exploit it. In the lake's food web the species functions as one of the small haplochromines that convert the lake's enormous algal and zooplankton production into fish biomass, in turn feeding larger predators.

Mating

No courtship or social behaviour has been described for Haplochromis oregosoma specifically, but its reproductive biology can be read confidently from the haplochromine pattern that runs throughout the Lake Victoria–Edward–George flock. These cichlids are not pair-bonding fish. Dominant males assume bright nuptial colour — here the yellow-cheeked dress noted in the pelagic Lake Edward haplochromines — and display to ripe females, typically over a small patch of bottom or within a loose lek-like gathering of competing males, while subordinate males and all females remain cryptically silvery. Mate choice rests largely with the female, who responds to male colour and display; outside of these brief spawning encounters the sexes lead independent lives. The male's role ends at fertilisation. How and where oregosoma males stake out display sites in the open, shallow waters of Lake George has not been observed.

Breeding

Haplochromis oregosoma is a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared by the entire Lake Victoria-region haplochromine radiation; FishBase records 'mouthbrooding by females' for the species. The general pattern is well established for the flock even though no spawning of this particular species has been documented. The female lays a small clutch of comparatively large, yolky eggs and immediately takes them into her mouth; the male's anal-fin egg-spots play their role in the spawning ritual, prompting the female to snap at them and so draw the male's milt into her buccal cavity to fertilise the eggs she is already carrying. She then broods the developing embryos in her mouth for several weeks, ceasing to feed for much of that time, and continues to shelter the free-swimming fry in her mouth at the first sign of danger after they begin to forage. Clutch sizes are not on record for oregosoma; for small Lake Victoria-region haplochromines of this body size, broods are typically modest — on the order of a few dozen eggs (roughly 20–60) rather than the hundreds laid by larger substrate-spawning cichlids. Care is given entirely by the female; the male contributes nothing after spawning. This labour-intensive, low-fecundity strategy produces few but well-protected young and is a large part of what made the haplochromine flocks so vulnerable to the introduced Nile perch elsewhere in the region.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis oregosoma is essentially never kept in the aquarium hobby. It is a tiny, plainly coloured, range-restricted species from a remote and ecologically demanding lake; it has no established presence in the ornamental trade, no hobbyist breeding reports, and no commercial supply. Anyone seeking a 'Lake Victoria haplochromine' for a tank will instead encounter the handful of colourful Victoria-flock species that have entered the hobby (the 'flameback', 'Christmas fulu' and similar fish), not this one.

If a specialist ever did maintain it, the requirements would follow from its biology rather than from any keeping tradition. It would need a long, open-topped tank emphasising horizontal swimming space for an active open-water fish, warm water in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, and hard, alkaline conditions (pH on the alkaline side of neutral, well up toward 8–9) to match the buffered, eutrophic water of Lake George. As a small zooplanktivore it would take small live and frozen foods — cyclops, daphnia, brine shrimp and finely chopped or powdered prepared diets — fed little and often. Like all maternal mouthbrooding haplochromines it would be best kept as a single male with several females to spread his aggression, with brooding females given cover or separation. None of this is tested husbandry, however: for this species the honest answer is that it is a wild fish of scientific rather than aquarium interest.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis oregosoma as Near Threatened (assessed 31 January 2006 by T.K. Twongo; reviewed by J. Snoeks and W. Darwall; published 2006, and flagged as needing updating). The assessment turns on the species' very small range: it is endemic to Lake George and the Kazinga Channel, a restricted extent of occurrence that nearly qualifies it as Endangered under criterion B1. The specific concern raised is water pollution — the potential for effluent and contaminants from mining activity in the Kasese District to reach shallow Lake George (Dunn 1989; Ogutu-Ohwayo et al. 1997). The population trend is recorded as unknown, and the whole picture rests on very few specimens.

Unlike the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock, which was devastated by the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus) from the 1980s onward, Lake George and Lake Edward were never successfully colonised by Nile perch, so the catastrophic predation that drove so many Victoria endemics to extinction did not play out here. The pressures on oregosoma are instead those of a tiny, shallow, intensively used equatorial lake: industrial and mining pollution, the heavy artisanal fishery the lake supports, and degradation of its surrounding papyrus wetlands and water quality. Its small absolute range means there is little margin for error, which is why even in the absence of a documented decline the species sits in the Near Threatened category rather than Least Concern.
