Haplochromis lanceolatus is a small African haplochromine cichlid described from Lake Albert, on the Albertine Nile between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite the slender, lance-like name, it is not a Lake Victoria fish: it was named by David and Poll in 1937 and almost immediately treated as a junior synonym of Haplochromis avium Regan, 1929, the species now usually placed in the genus Thoracochromis. As one of Lake Albert's many poorly known mouthbrooding cichlids, it is unranked by the IUCN (Not Evaluated) and effectively unknown in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis lanceolatus was described in 1937 by the Belgian-based ichthyologists Lieven David and Max Poll, in their account of the Congo-basin fish collections made by Dr. H. Schouteden and others for the Royal Museum for Central Africa (MRAC, Tervuren). The type locality is Lake Albert ("Lac Albert"), the northernmost of the great Albertine Rift lakes, and the holotype is held at the MRAC under register 21.104. The name has had a short and complicated life. Within a year, Ethelwynn Trewavas, reviewing the Lake Albert species of Haplochromis in 1938, treated lanceolatus as a synonym of Haplochromis avium Regan, 1929 — a placement followed by later workers including Greenwood (1971, 1974). The synonymy is marked as somewhat ambiguous in the historical catalogues (the CLOFFA database flags it with a query), reflecting how difficult these lake-flock haplochromines are to separate, but the prevailing modern treatment folds lanceolatus into avium. Peter Humphry Greenwood's 1979 phyletic revision of the Haplochromis assemblage moved that species into the genus Thoracochromis, so the currently accepted name for the fish lanceolatus represents is Thoracochromis avium (Regan, 1929). We retain the Haplochromis heading here because that is the genus under which the name lanceolatus was published and under which it is still indexed; readers should understand that they are looking at a junior synonym within the broad, repeatedly subdivided "Haplochromis" radiation of the African lakes, not a distinct, valid Lake Victoria species. It is worth correcting one common misconception directly: this is an Albertine-Rift fish, not a member of the Lake Victoria species flock.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid. Catalogue and museum data give a maximum of roughly 2 in — about 2 in total length (some sources cite the figure as standard length) — placing it among the more modestly sized members of the lake flock rather than the large, fang-toothed piscivores the lance-shaped name might suggest. Beyond size, dedicated published description of the fish under the name lanceolatus is thin, because the name was sunk into synonymy so quickly; most of what can be said about its anatomy comes from the senior synonym, avium. As an African haplochromine it has the typical body plan of the group: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body, a single continuous dorsal fin with a spiny anterior portion and soft-rayed rear, and the anal-fin egg-spots (ocelli) characteristic of mouthbrooding pseudocrenilabrine cichlids, used by males during spawning. Greenwood's placement of avium in Thoracochromis was based on dental and osteological characters shared across that genus rather than on a single dramatic feature. Sexual dimorphism in these fishes follows the haplochromine norm — breeding males develop brighter nuptial coloration and well-defined anal egg-spots while females remain more subdued — but no quantified, species-specific account of male versus female coloration for this taxon appears in the accessible literature, so the dimorphism should be regarded as inferred from the genus pattern rather than separately documented.

Habitat

The fish is endemic to the Lake Albert system on the Uganda-DR Congo border, part of the Albertine Nile drainage within the broader Nile basin. The original specimens of the senior synonym avium were not taken by net at all but recovered from the stomachs of fish-eating cormorants — the source of that epithet, which means "of birds" — which tells us the fish lives within foraging range of diving piscivorous birds, i.e. in the productive nearshore and sub-littoral waters of the lake rather than its deep offshore profundal. Lake Albert itself is a large, shallow rift lake (mean depth around 82 ft, maximum near 190 ft) lying at about 2018 ft elevation; it is more turbid and more productive than the clear, deep southern rift lakes. Measured water chemistry is mild by Rift-lake standards: a recent physicochemical survey across six stations found the lake essentially neutral to slightly alkaline, with pH around 7.2 (± 0.2) and warm tropical surface temperatures typical of an equatorial lowland lake (generally in the mid-20s °C). These are not the high-pH, hard-water conditions of Lakes Malawi and Tanganyika; Lake Albert water is comparatively soft and close to neutral. Precise depth occupancy for this particular species is not documented, but congeners and the cormorant-predation evidence point to the upper, illuminated water column over inshore bottoms.

Feeding

No gut-content study published specifically under the name lanceolatus is available, so its diet must be read from its affinities and its lake. Lake Albert's haplochromine community, like those of the other Great Lakes, partitions a wide range of trophic roles — algae-scrapers, insectivores, mollusc-crushers, zooplanktivores and piscivores. At roughly 2 in this is a small fish, and small-bodied haplochromines of this size class are typically generalized invertebrate feeders, taking insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and other small benthic and planktonic prey rather than other fish. The slender, lance-like body implied by the epithet lanceolatus may have suggested a more predatory habit to its describers, but its modest size argues against true piscivory. Its placement in Thoracochromis (a genus that spans several feeding types) does not pin the diet down further. In the absence of direct dietary data, it is most honest to describe it as a small invertebrate-feeding haplochromine of Lake Albert's inshore waters whose precise trophic niche has not been worked out.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour has not been observed or reported for this fish specifically, and it has, as far as the literature shows, never been kept or bred in aquaria. What can be said is inferred from the overwhelmingly consistent pattern across the African haplochromine cichlids to which it belongs. These are maternal (female) mouthbrooders with a polygynous, lek-like mating system: males establish and defend small temporary territories or display sites, develop bright nuptial colours and conspicuous anal-fin egg-spots, and court passing females with quivering displays. There is no lasting pair bond. After a brief courtship the female lays a small clutch, takes the eggs into her mouth, and is fertilized as she mouths the male's egg-spots — the classic haplochromine spawning sequence first worked out by Wickler. Beyond this genus-typical picture, nothing species-specific is documented, and the account here should be read as the expected behaviour of a Lake Albert haplochromine rather than as observed fact for this taxon.

Breeding

Like essentially all members of the genus and the wider Lake Albert flock, this is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female alone incubates the fertilized eggs and the developing larvae inside her buccal cavity for roughly two to three weeks, releasing free-swimming fry that she may continue to shelter in her mouth when threatened for a short period afterward. The male provides no parental care beyond fertilization. Clutch sizes for small haplochromines of this body size are modest — on the order of a few dozen eggs and rarely more than that, with fecundity scaling to female size — but no clutch count, egg size, or developmental timing has been published for this species itself, so any specific number would be an invention. There is no record of captive spawning. The honest summary is that its breeding mode is confidently known from genus membership (maternal mouthbrooding, no biparental care) while every quantitative detail remains undocumented for the fish under this name.

In the aquarium

This species is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a small, taxonomically obscure Lake Albert haplochromine that has been treated as a junior synonym since 1938; it has no established presence in the ornamental trade, is not commercially available, and there appears to be no published account of anyone maintaining or breeding it. Lake Albert as a whole exports very few cichlids to the hobby compared with Lakes Malawi, Tanganyika and Victoria, and the handful of Albertine haplochromines that do reach enthusiasts are specialist, rarely seen fishes.

If the fish ever did appear, the husbandry would follow general principles for a small riverine-to-lacustrine African mouthbrooder rather than the high-pH "Rift-lake" recipe used for Malawi and Tanganyika cichlids — an important distinction, because Lake Albert water is close to neutral (around pH 7.2) and comparatively soft, not the hard, alkaline water those other lakes demand. A reasonable target would be warm water in the mid-20s °C, pH roughly 7.0–7.5, moderate hardness, a fine sand substrate with some rockwork and open swimming space, and the standard mouthbrooder social arrangement of one male with several females in a group large enough to spread male aggression. A varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrate foods (and quality micro-pellets or flake) would suit a fish of its size. All of this is extrapolation, offered only to be useful: there is no hobby track record for this particular cichlid, and a keeper is far more likely to encounter it mislabelled or as a museum name than as a fish for sale.

Conservation

No global IUCN Red List assessment exists for this fish under either the name Haplochromis lanceolatus or its senior synonym; it is best recorded as Not Evaluated (NE). This is unsurprising — many of Lake Albert's endemic haplochromines remain unassessed, and as a junior synonym lanceolatus would in any case be evaluated only under the valid name. The relevant conservation context is therefore that of the Lake Albert flock as a whole. Lake Albert has not suffered the catastrophic, Nile-perch-driven collapse that devastated the Lake Victoria haplochromines, because Lates is part of its native fauna; its cichlids face a different and more chronic set of pressures — heavy commercial and artisanal fishing, growing human population and pollution around its shores, sedimentation from catchment land-use change, and, increasingly, the prospect of oil development in the Albertine Graben. The endemic small haplochromines of the lake are poorly studied and poorly monitored, so their true status is genuinely uncertain. Until the taxonomy of the Lake Albert flock is resolved and its species are formally assessed, the conservative reading is that this is an unranked, data-poor endemic of a lake under mounting but incompletely quantified threat.
