Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis paradoxus is a small, paedophagous haplochromine cichlid endemic to the Lake Edward system on the Uganda–DR Congo border, where it preys on the eggs and larvae of mouthbrooding cichlids. Described in 2003 as the sole member of a resurrected genus Pyxichromis, it was later folded back into Haplochromis and shown to be one of five paedophages in the lake; the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis paradoxus was described in 2003 by Elke Lippitsch and Les Kaufman, in the German journal Zeitschrift für Fischkunde, from specimens taken off the Katwe fish landing on the northern shore of Lake Edward, East Africa. They placed it not in Haplochromis but in Pyxichromis, a small genus Peter Humphry Greenwood had erected in 1980; their paper was as much a reassessment of Pyxichromis as the description of a new fish, and they used paradoxus to anchor the genus. The holotype (MCZ 135767) is held at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard, where Kaufman worked. Like virtually every member of the vast Lake Victoria–Edward 'superflock', the species sits in the catch-all genus Haplochromis as it is currently used — a deliberately broad container for hundreds of closely related East African haplochromines whose finer generic divisions (Pyxichromis, Lipochromis, Prognathochromis, Harpagochromis and the rest) remain contested and are not consistently applied. The Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both now list the fish as Haplochromis paradoxus (Lippitsch & Kaufman 2003), the parentheses recording the move out of its original genus. That transfer follows the work of Nathan Vranken, Maarten Van Steenberge and Jos Snoeks, whose 2019 revision of the lake's paedophages treated all of these fishes under Haplochromis. The name paradoxus — Greek for 'contrary to expectation' — is a deliberate double entendre: it points both to the fish's strange face, with its steeply oblique gape and a pronounced concavity in the head profile in front of the eye, and to what the authors called its 'paradoxical zoogeographical situation', since its closest relatives are scattered across Lakes Edward, Victoria and Kyoga even though Lake Victoria is known to have dried out almost completely around 17,000 years ago and refilled only later.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid: the type series reaches only about 3 in in standard length. The body is fusiform and relatively slender for a haplochromine, with a body depth of roughly 31–34% of standard length — distinctly shallower than the deeper-bodied Pyxichromis species (35–42%) it was once grouped with. The fin counts are typical of the genus: 14–16 dorsal spines and 9–11 soft rays, three anal spines with 8–9 soft rays, and 29–30 vertebrae. The diagnostic feature, and the source of the name, is the head: the gape and lower jaw are strongly oblique, and the dorsal profile dips into a marked concavity just ahead of the eye, giving the fish an upturned, almost scowling face. The oral teeth tell the story of its diet. Where the dedicated egg-and-larva thieves of the genus carry few, widely spaced teeth, Haplochromis paradoxus has unusually numerous outer teeth — 36 to 65, versus 16 to 35 in the other Lake Edward paedophages — that are strongly recurved at the neck and packed into long bands, with short, bluntly pointed, weakly tricuspid crowns. Its lips are slightly thickened, and the maxilla stops short of a vertical line through the front of the eye. Mature males are grey to bluish above and an intense yellow below, a colour pattern that, together with the dentition, separates them from the lake's other paedophages. No photograph of a live fish is in general circulation; the species is known almost entirely from preserved museum material.

Habitat

Haplochromis paradoxus is endemic to the Lake Edward system in the western (Albertine) arm of the East African Rift, straddling the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The system comprises Lake Edward itself, the much shallower and smaller Lake George to its northeast, the Kazinga Channel that joins them, and their associated rivers; the type material came from off Katwe, on the Ugandan shore of Lake Edward. The lake is a moderately deep rift lake — about 367 ft at its deepest, but with a mean depth of only around 56 ft — and the bulk of its cichlid life is concentrated in the well-lit, oxygenated inshore and sublittoral zone, since the deep water is poorly oxygenated. As a paedophage that must find brooding females to rob, this species lives where those mouthbrooders live: the productive shallow margins rather than open or deep water. FishBase classes it as benthopelagic and gives no measured depth range, so the figures here describe the lake rather than the fish. Lake Edward is a productive, fairly alkaline soda-influenced rift lake; published values place its surface waters around pH 8.5–9.2 with conductivity near 900 µS/cm, and surface temperatures in the rift-lake range. The endemic cichlid assemblage it shares — some 60 haplochromine species, the great majority found nowhere else — is among the least-studied of the East African Great Lake flocks.

Feeding

Haplochromis paradoxus is a paedophage — a specialist that feeds on the eggs and larvae of other cichlids. In Lake Edward, as across the haplochromine flocks, most paedophages make their living by stealing developing young from the buccal cavities of mouthbrooding females, either ambushing a brooding fish and butting or startling her into releasing her clutch, or by ramming the mouth to dislodge the brood. The 2019 revision by Vranken and colleagues set out to catalogue every Lake Edward Haplochromis with the tell-tale paedophage build — long oral jaws set with small teeth — and confirmed by stomach-content examination that Haplochromis paradoxus indeed had a paedophagous diet, alongside the previously known Haplochromis taurinus and three species new to science (Haplochromis gracilifur, Haplochromis molossus and Haplochromis relictidens). The strongly oblique, upturned mouth is the functional core of the guild, letting the fish engage a brooding female from below or in front. Its denser, more numerous teeth set it slightly apart from the lake's other egg-thieves and may reflect a somewhat different handling of prey. Paedophagy of this kind is a recurring evolutionary theme in the Lake Victoria–Edward superflock, where the dense aggregations of mouthbrooding cichlids present a rich, defended food supply that a handful of lineages have repeatedly evolved to exploit.

Mating

Nothing has been published on the courtship or social behaviour of Haplochromis paradoxus specifically; it is known only from preserved specimens, and no field or aquarium observations of its breeding behaviour exist. What can be said is drawn from the biology of the haplochromine flock to which it belongs. These cichlids are, almost without exception, polygynous maternal mouthbrooders in which males defend small territories and court females with displays directed by bright nuptial colour — here, the male's grey-blue back and vivid yellow underside. Males of the group typically carry egg-spot markings or yellow flank colour used to lure the female during spawning; the female takes the eggs into her mouth, the male's display completes fertilization, and the pair bond ends there. The intense yellow ventral colour of mature male Haplochromis paradoxus is consistent with this pattern, but its specific spawning behaviour remains undocumented and should be treated as inference from close relatives rather than observation.

Breeding

No spawning of Haplochromis paradoxus has been recorded, in the wild or in captivity, so its reproduction is described here by reference to the flock. Like essentially all Lake Victoria–Edward haplochromines, it is expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder: the female incubates the fertilized eggs in her mouth for roughly two to three weeks, releasing free-swimming fry that she may continue to shelter in her buccal cavity when threatened. Clutch sizes are small in these little cichlids; congeneric Lake Victoria and Lake Edward haplochromines of similar size typically lay on the order of a few dozen eggs (commonly ~20–60), a low fecundity offset by the protection mouthbrooding affords. There is a particular irony in this for a paedophage, whose own broods are the very resource its kind exploits in others — and brooding females of paedophagous species are themselves vulnerable to robbing. No specific egg count, brooding duration or fry-development data exist for paradoxus; the figures above are genus-typical values and are flagged as such.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis paradoxus is effectively never kept in aquaria. It is a tiny, drab, scientifically obscure fish known almost entirely from museum jars, with no established presence in the ornamental trade and no aquarium-keeping literature of its own. The colourful Lake Victoria 'furu' that do reach hobbyists are a small set of hardier, brighter species; this Lake Edward endemic is not among them, and there is no documented import history. Anyone who did somehow obtain it would have to extrapolate husbandry from its relatives: a hard, alkaline rift-lake setup with pH around 8 and warm water in the mid-20s Celsius, a roomy tank with open swimming space and broken sightlines, and the brisk, aggressive social dynamics typical of haplochromines kept in a one-male, several-female harem to spread male aggression. The crucial and self-defeating problem is diet: as an obligate egg-and-larva thief it is adapted to rob brooding mouthbrooders, behaviour that is destructive to keep alongside any breeding cichlid and difficult to satisfy with substitute foods. In short, this is a fish for ichthyologists and conservation biologists, not aquarists, and that is how it should be presented — there is no honest 'how to keep it' to offer.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis paradoxus as Data Deficient (DD), assessed on 3 March 2007 by Jos Snoeks, Philippe Lalèyè and Topiltzin Contreras MacBeath, with the range given as Lake Edward, Uganda; no specific threats to the species were identified, and its population trend is unknown. Data Deficient here reflects exactly what the literature shows — a fish known from very few specimens, whose distribution within the lake, abundance and ecology are too poorly understood to judge extinction risk. The wider context is more reassuring than for the Lake Victoria flock: Lake Edward was never invaded by the Nile perch (Lates niloticus) that devastated Victoria's haplochromines, and its shores are bordered by Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park and the DR Congo's Virunga National Park, which afford the basin a degree of protection. The lake is not without pressures, however — rising artisanal fishing effort has been reducing fish stocks, and oil exploration in the surrounding Albertine Rift raises the prospect of pollution, set against the usual backdrop of climate change and shoreline habitat loss. None of these is documented as a specific danger to this particular cichlid, but they are the conditions under which its still-uncatalogued flock persists, and the case for resolving its Data Deficient status is mainly a case for more fieldwork.
