Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1904 as Paratilapia prognatha, on material from Lake Victoria, and was figured early on by G.A. Boulenger (1907) in his catalogue of the lake's cichlids. It has long since been carried under Haplochromis, the vast genus that the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase use as a holding name for the Lake Victoria haplochromine 'flock' of several hundred closely related, recently evolved endemics. The name carries a particular taxonomic weight: when P. Humphry Greenwood completed his eleven-paper revision of the Victoria haplochromines (1956–1978) and proposed a generic breakup in 1980, he made prognathus the type species of a new genus, Prognathochromis, raised to hold the lake's slender-bodied, large-mouthed piscivores. That generic scheme has never been universally adopted — many workers find the Victoria species too young and too intergraded to assign cleanly to Greenwood's genera (van Oijen 1996) — so the atlas, like FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes, retains the conservative Haplochromis heading while noting that Prognathochromis prognathus is the same fish. ETYFish and the Catalog of Fishes both treat Prognathochromis as a synonym of Haplochromis. Witte & van Oijen and colleagues at the Leiden museum (Naturalis) carried out the modern systematic revision of these piscivorous haplochromines.
Morphology
Haplochromis prognathus is a comparatively small, elongate, laterally compressed cichlid; FishBase gives a maximum of 5.5 in standard length, which places it among the medium-sized members of the piscivore group rather than the giants. The defining feature is the one Pellegrin chose to name it for: a strongly projecting, prominent lower jaw set in a large, deeply cleft mouth — the long-snouted, big-gaped build of a fish that hunts other fish. The body is slender and streamlined, the classic shape of Greenwood's Prognathochromis piscivores. As in essentially all Lake Victoria haplochromines, coloration is sexually dimorphic and visually charged: nuptial males develop the bright, species-specific breeding livery on which females rely to recognize and choose a mate, while females and non-breeding fish are a more cryptic silvery-brown. Detailed live-colour notes for this particular species are sparse in the literature, reflecting how little of the flock was documented in colour before the late-century crash. Males also carry the egg-mimic 'ocelli' (egg-spots) on the anal fin typical of haplochromine breeding males.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Victoria, the great shallow East African lake shared by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and it has been recorded in surveys across all three national sectors. FishBase places it at roughly 1°N to 3°S and reports it as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of relatively shallow water — recorded down to about 20 ft — that occurs at both sheltered and exposed localities wherever the substrate is hard. That preference for firm bottoms over soft mud is a real habitat signature for an actively hunting piscivore. No in-situ water chemistry has been published specifically for Haplochromis prognathus, so the figures here are lake-wide values for Victoria: a warm, alkaline, comparatively shallow lake running roughly 73–81 °F at the surface with pH around 7.2 to 9.0. Lake Victoria is far younger and shallower than the great Rift lakes, and its water transparency — historically high, now badly reduced by eutrophication — is central to the biology of its visually mating cichlids.
Feeding
Haplochromis prognathus is a piscivore — a fish-eater — and the projecting jaw, large mouth and slender, fast-bodied build are all the hardware of that trade. FishBase records its diet as fish, with insects and plant material taken as well, and estimates a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a predator that takes other fishes (chiefly smaller haplochromines and the lake's abundant cyprinids and juvenile fish) but is not an exclusive top carnivore. Within Lake Victoria's once-extraordinary cichlid radiation, the piscivores formed one of the major trophic guilds — a suite of species that partitioned the predatory niche among themselves — and prognathus belonged to that guild. The arrival of a far larger, introduced apex predator, the Nile perch, would later overwhelm this native piscivore community.
Mating
Like all Lake Victoria haplochromines, Haplochromis prognathus is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no pair bond. Reproduction turns on female mate choice driven by vision: nuptial males display species-specific breeding colours, and females recognize and select conspecific mates by those visual signals. This colour-coded courtship is widely thought to be a primary engine of the flock's explosive speciation — and, conversely, its undoing. When eutrophication and sediment runoff cut the lake's water transparency, the visual cues that keep species reproductively separate began to fail, and the IUCN names hybridization driven by reduced visibility, alongside Nile-perch predation, as the principal threat to this fish. Males are presumed to be territorial during courtship in the manner typical of the group, though detailed in-situ behavioural observations for prognathus specifically are not published.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in detail for Haplochromis prognathus, but its mode is not in doubt: FishBase records it as a mouthbrooder, and every member of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock is a maternal (female-only) mouthbrooder. The female lays a small clutch of relatively large, yolky eggs, takes them immediately into her mouth, and the male fertilizes them there — the egg-spots on his anal fin functioning as decoys that draw the female to snap at them and so take in milt. She then carries and oxygenates the developing eggs and larvae in her buccal cavity for the incubation period, releasing free-swimming fry that may continue to shelter in her mouth when threatened. No published fecundity count exists for this species; congeneric Lake Victoria haplochromines of similar size typically produce small broods on the order of a few dozen eggs (commonly ~20–80), the low-fecundity, high-investment strategy that mouthbrooding allows. Parental care is maternal only, ending after the brief period of post-release buccal sheltering.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis prognathus is essentially not an aquarium fish. It is a Data Deficient, rarely encountered Lake Victoria endemic with no established presence in the hobby or the ornamental trade; unlike the handful of colourful Victoria haplochromines that reached aquarists (the 'Victoria hap' rock-dwellers and a few captive-conservation lineages), this slender piscivore is not kept and not sold, and no captive husbandry or breeding has been recorded for it. Any general guidance would only be extrapolated from its relatives: it would need a long, hard-bottomed tank, warm (about 75–81 °F) hard alkaline water at pH 7.5–8.5, live or meaty foods suited to a fish-eater, and — because it is a maternal mouthbrooder with no pair bond — a harem of one male to several females with cover for subordinate fish. In practice, the honest entry is that this species belongs to the wild fauna and to conservation work, not to the home aquarium. Keepers interested in Lake Victoria cichlids should look to the documented hobby and species-survival species rather than to prognathus.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis prognathus as Data Deficient (assessed 31 March 2010 by F. Witte and M.P. de Zeeuw; population trend unknown), meaning there is too little current information to judge its extinction risk with confidence. The assessment identifies the main threat as hybridization caused by reduced water transparency — eutrophication, erosion and runoff increasing turbidity and so interfering with the visual cues these fish use for mate recognition — with predation by the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus) named as an additional, potentially reversible pressure. The fish is taken in fisheries, though not specifically targeted. This sits inside one of the most studied ecological catastrophes in freshwater biology: the upsurge of Nile perch from the 1980s, compounded by lake-wide eutrophication, drove a collapse of Lake Victoria's endemic haplochromine flock in which an estimated hundreds of species declined sharply and many are feared extinct, the piscivores among the hardest hit. A partial resurgence of some haplochromine trophic groups followed the decline of the Nile perch fishery in the 1990s (Witte and colleagues), but recovery has been uneven across guilds, and whether this particular long-jawed piscivore persists in numbers remains, as the Data Deficient listing acknowledges, genuinely uncertain.
