Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis prodromus was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935, in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History. The name is in fact a replacement: Charles Tate Regan had described the fish in 1922 as Haplochromis annectens, from material taken on the Buddu Coast on the Ugandan shore of Lake Victoria, but that name was secondarily preoccupied within Haplochromis by Cyrtocara annectens Regan, 1922, when the two were brought together in the same genus. Trewavas therefore coined prodromus as a substitute name; under the rules of nomenclature it carries Regan's 1907 type specimen forward, the unique holotype held at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1907.5.7.78). Haplochromis annectens Regan, 1922 is its sole synonym. The species sits in the tribe Haplochromini of the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, and Greenwood treated it in Part II of his landmark revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis (1957), alongside the related molluscivores Haplochromis sauvagei and Haplochromis granti. The genus Haplochromis has long been a taxonomic catch-all for the hundreds of Lake Victoria-region cichlids, and many workers have since split the flock into numerous genera; because no stable replacement combination has been formally and widely adopted for this species, it is retained here under its original genus heading, Haplochromis.

Morphology

Haplochromis prodromus is a modest-sized haplochromine, reaching about 5 in in standard length, with the deep-bodied, laterally compressed build typical of the lake's flock. Detailed colour notes for the species are sparse in the accessible literature, and no good photograph of a living wild fish is widely available; as in most haplochromines, breeding males would be expected to carry the brighter nuptial colours and egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin, while females and non-breeding fish are duller and more cryptic. The feature that defines the species is internal rather than chromatic: it is one of the lake's 'oral shelling/crushing' molluscivores, a guild distinguished by a stout, robust dentition and jaws built to grip and crack snail shells in the mouth rather than at the pharyngeal mill. This sets it apart from the parallel guild of 'pharyngeal mollusc crushers' (such as Haplochromis ishmaeli), which swallow snails whole and crush them with massive flattened throat teeth. Sexual dimorphism is presumed present on the haplochromine pattern, but the species-specific details have not been documented in sources accessible here, so it is described only in general terms.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Victoria, the great equatorial lake shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya and the heart of the Lake Victoria Basin freshwater ecoregion. It is a fish of the littoral and sub-littoral, occurring most often where the bottom is hard — sand or shingle — and less frequently over mud, and it is most common in shallow inshore water less than about 33 ft deep. Lake Victoria is a warm, well-lit equatorial water body: surface temperatures across the lake generally run in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, and its open waters are moderately alkaline, with pH in the lake typically ranging from roughly neutral up to about 9. Like the rest of the flock, Haplochromis prodromus lives within this warm, hard-water, alkaline envelope rather than the soft acidic conditions of many other cichlid waters. Because precise in-situ measurements at this species' collection sites are not published in the sources consulted, the chemistry given here is the general lake condition rather than a site-specific reading.

Feeding

Haplochromis prodromus is a molluscivore — specifically an oral sheller and crusher of snails. In the trophic classification of the Lake Victoria flock by Witte and van Oijen, it is grouped with Haplochromis sauvagei, Haplochromis granti, Haplochromis xenognathus and others as a fish that grips gastropods in its jaws and crushes or shells them in the mouth, rather than swallowing them whole for the pharyngeal teeth to mill. Its recorded diet is gastropods (with the operculate snail Bellamya unicolor noted as a likely staple), bivalves and insect larvae; FishBase summarises this simply as molluscs and insects, and places the species at a trophic level of about 3.4. Within the lake community it is a mid-level consumer, exploiting the bottom-dwelling snail and clam fauna of the hard-substrate shallows — a feeding niche that, multiplied across dozens of closely related species, is part of what made the Victoria flock such a celebrated example of trophic diversification.

Mating

As a Lake Victoria haplochromine, Haplochromis prodromus is a maternal mouthbrooder, and the courtship behaviour of the flock is well understood in outline even where this particular species has not been studied directly. In such cichlids the sexes live separately outside breeding; a male takes up and defends a small spawning territory and displays to passing females, flashing his nuptial colours and the egg-spots on his anal fin. Receptive females are courted onto the spawning site. Pair bonding is brief and there is no lasting partnership: the male's role ends at fertilisation, and all subsequent parental investment falls to the female. Species-specific courtship details (territory type, display sites, the timing of breeding) have not been documented for Haplochromis prodromus in the sources available, so this account reflects the general haplochromine pattern rather than direct observation of the species.

Breeding

Breeding follows the maternal mouthbrooding mode universal to the Lake Victoria haplochromines: the female lays a small clutch of eggs, takes them into her mouth, and the male fertilises them — in many haplochromines using the egg-spots on his anal fin to draw the female to snap at his vent, fertilising the eggs already in her buccal cavity. She then carries the developing eggs and larvae in her mouth for the incubation period, not feeding while she broods, and releases free-swimming fry that may continue to shelter in her mouth when threatened. Clutch sizes in small Lake Victoria haplochromines of this body size are typically on the order of a few dozen eggs (commonly cited at roughly 20-80 for comparable species), reflecting the trade-off mouthbrooders make between many small eggs and a few well-protected young. The specific fecundity, egg size, incubation time and fry development of Haplochromis prodromus have not been documented in the accessible literature; the figures given here are clearly labelled as genus-typical rather than measured for this species.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis prodromus is essentially never kept in the aquarium hobby. It has no established place in the trade, no common name, and no body of hobbyist breeding reports — unlike a handful of colourful Victorian haplochromines (the various 'Hippo Point salmon', 'ruby green' and 'flameback' forms) that are maintained in conservation-minded aquarist circles. Any keeper who did obtain it would treat it as a generic Lake Victoria haplochromine: a hard-water, alkaline-loving mouthbrooder needing warm water around 24-27 C and a pH on the alkaline side of neutral (roughly 7.5-8.5), with a sand or fine-gravel bottom in keeping with its natural hard-substrate littoral. Like its relatives it would be best kept in a group with a male-skewed-against, females-favoured sex ratio to spread aggression, in a tank large enough (four feet or more) to let subdominant fish escape a displaying male. As a snail specialist it would benefit from a diet that includes hard-shelled invertebrates or snails alongside standard prepared foods. None of this is documented practice for the species itself — it is inference from how the flock as a whole is maintained — and the honest position is that this is a wild fish of scientific rather than aquarium interest.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis prodromus as Data Deficient (assessed 31 March 2010 by F. Witte and M.P. de Zeeuw; population trend unknown). Data Deficient means there is not enough information to judge its extinction risk reliably — a common verdict for the many small, taxonomically difficult, hard-to-survey members of the Lake Victoria flock. The backdrop, however, is one of the most dramatic vertebrate declines on record. From the 1950s onward the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus) exploded across Lake Victoria, and through predation — compounded by eutrophication, declining water clarity and intense fishing — the haplochromine flock collapsed, with an estimated 200 or more endemic species lost or driven to the brink and haplochromines reduced to a small fraction of the lake's fish biomass. The threats the IUCN records for this species reflect that picture: invasive species, fishing and harvesting, and pollution from domestic, industrial and agricultural sources. Whether Haplochromis prodromus persists in numbers, survives only in refuge habitats, or has been lost is precisely what 'Data Deficient' leaves open; its fate is bound up with that of the wider Victoria flock and with whether the partial haplochromine recovery seen in some parts of the lake since the 1990s extends to specialised molluscivores like this one.
