Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Victoria — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis squamulatus is a small piscivorous cichlid of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock, described by Charles Tate Regan in 1922 from the Ripon Falls at Jinja, Uganda. A fish-eater of hard-bottomed littoral and offshore grounds, it is one of the hundreds of "furu" cichlids hit hard by the Nile-perch upsurge; the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient and Eschmeyer's Catalog flags it as possibly extinct.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis squamulatus was named by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1922, in his landmark monograph on the cichlid fishes of Lake Victoria (Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London). The name is not a fresh description of new material but a replacement name (nomen novum): Regan coined squamulatus for Paratilapia pectoralis Boulenger, 1911, a Lake Victoria fish whose epithet was secondarily preoccupied — the combination Ctenochromis pectoralis had already been used by Pfeffer in 1893. The holotype, a unique specimen, is held at the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale in Genoa (MSNG 12977), and the type locality is given as Jinja, at the Ripon Falls, Uganda — the historic outflow of the lake into the Victoria Nile, now submerged behind the Owen Falls (Nalubaale) Dam. Greenwood retained the species as valid in his 1967 revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis, as did van Oijen and colleagues in the CLOFFA check-list (1991). The species belongs to the vast Lake Victoria haplochromine "flock" placed in subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. Haplochromis in the broad Regan sense is a notorious catch-all, and many of the Victoria species have since been reshuffled into segregate genera (Prognathochromis, Harpagochromis, Yssichromis and others) by Greenwood and later workers; the modern literature often treats the lake's piscivores under Harpagochromis or Prognathochromis. We keep the long-standing Haplochromis heading here because it remains the name under which the species is catalogued and most readily recognised.

Morphology

This is a modestly sized haplochromine: FishBase records a maximum of 8 in standard length, placing it among the larger members of a flock whose species mostly run well under 6 in. The body is the typical haplochromine form — laterally compressed, with a fairly elongate profile suited to an active mid-water predator. As its name advertises, the diagnostic feature is in the scaling: squamulatus means "small-scaled," and the etymology refers to the very small scales on the nape and pectoral region, a character Regan inherited from Boulenger's original pectoralis material (the preoccupied name itself pointed at the pectoral squamation). Detailed in-life coloration is poorly documented, and no colour photograph appears to be in general circulation; as in most of the flock, males would have been the more brightly pigmented sex, females and juveniles drabber and more cryptic. Sexual dimorphism is therefore expected to follow the haplochromine norm — colourful, larger males bearing egg-spots on the anal fin versus plainer, often smaller females — but the species' own dimorphism has not been described in the detail available for better-studied congeners.

Habitat

Haplochromis squamulatus is endemic to Lake Victoria, the great East African Rift lake shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya; the IUCN assessment lists confirmed occurrence in Tanzania and Uganda. FishBase characterises it as freshwater and benthopelagic, recorded across a wide range of habitats — sheltered and exposed, littoral and offshore — but most consistently associated with hard substrates of rock, sand and shingle rather than soft mud. Lake Victoria is a large, shallow, well-mixed tropical lake; its surface waters are warm (roughly 73–81 °F) and alkaline, with pH generally in the 7.2–9.0 range and the species occupying the upper, oxygenated water column over its preferred firm grounds. A precise depth band for squamulatus is not published in FishBase, but the flock's hard-substrate piscivores characteristically work the sunlit sub-littoral down to a few tens of metres; the practical occupied range is best read as roughly the upper 0–66 ft, with the species absent from the deoxygenated deep water. As a habitat generalist by haplochromine standards — sheltered to exposed, inshore to offshore — it was less narrowly tied to one biotope than many of its reef- or rock-restricted relatives.

Feeding

Haplochromis squamulatus is a piscivore — a fish-eater. FishBase records the diet plainly as "feeds on fish" and estimates a trophic level of about 4.2, near the top of the haplochromine range, consistent with a predator that takes other small fishes (overwhelmingly other haplochromines and juvenile cichlids) rather than invertebrates, algae or detritus. Within the Lake Victoria flock, piscivory evolved repeatedly, and the lake once supported a remarkable diversity of fish-eating haplochromines partitioned by hunting style, mouth shape and habitat; squamulatus belongs to this predatory guild, hunting over the hard littoral and offshore bottoms it frequents. Its position high on the food web is precisely what made the guild so exposed to the arrival of a far larger introduced predator (see Conservation): the native piscivores were both competitors with and prey of the Nile perch.

Mating

Specific courtship and territorial behaviour have not been documented for Haplochromis squamulatus, and what can be said is drawn from the well-established pattern of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock to which it belongs. These cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders with a polygynous, lek-like mating system: ripe males develop bright nuptial colour and court females with characteristic displays, the male's anal-fin egg-spots functioning as a lure during spawning. There is no lasting pair bond and no biparental territory of the kind seen in substrate-spawning cichlids — the female alone assumes care once eggs are fertilised. Whether squamulatus males held discrete display territories on the hard substrate, as many flock members do, is plausible but not on record.

Breeding

Like essentially all members of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock, Haplochromis squamulatus is a maternal mouthbrooder: FishBase records "mouthbrooding by females." The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth — the male's anal-fin egg-spots are thought to help ensure fertilisation as she does so — and broods the developing clutch in her buccal cavity, releasing free-swimming fry only after they have absorbed the yolk. The young may continue to shelter in the mother's mouth when threatened for a period after release. No clutch count, egg size or brooding duration has been published specifically for squamulatus; by the standard of comparably sized Lake Victoria haplochromines, broods are small — on the order of a few dozen eggs (roughly 20–80), a low fecundity offset by the high survival that mouthbrooding confers. Spawning in the wild was presumably tied to the warm, aseasonal conditions of the equatorial lake rather than to a strong annual trigger.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis squamulatus is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. Unlike the colourful rock-dwelling "Victorian haps" that reach hobbyists through conservation-breeding programmes, this species has no established presence in the trade, no body of captive-keeping accounts, and — given its Data Deficient, possibly-extinct status — may no longer be available to collect at all. Anything written about keeping it would therefore be inference from its biology rather than experience. Were wild-type stock ever to surface, it would demand what its relatives do: a large, well-filtered tank with hard, alkaline water (pH around 7.5–8.5, temperature 75–81 °F), open swimming room over a sand-and-rock layout, and a recognition that this is a piscivore — it would treat small tankmates as food, so companions would have to be too large to swallow and robust enough to share space with an active predator. The much more important point is the conservation one: the great value of the Lake Victoria flock in captivity lies in maintaining genetically managed populations of species pushed to the brink in the wild, not in casual fishkeeping.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis squamulatus as Data Deficient (assessed 31 March 2010 by F. Witte and M.P. de Zeeuw; population trend unknown), reflecting how little recent information exists on a species that has not been reliably recorded through the upheaval of its lake. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes goes further, flagging its distribution as "Lake Victoria; extinct." Both statements sit against the same backdrop: the transformation of Lake Victoria over the late twentieth century. The deliberate introduction of the predatory Nile perch (Lates niloticus), which boomed from around 1980, coincided with the collapse of the endemic haplochromine flock — an estimated several hundred species, many of them undescribed, are thought to have been lost or driven to vanishingly low numbers. Heavy fishing, eutrophication and falling water clarity from catchment deforestation and nutrient loading compounded the damage; reduced visibility also eroded the colour-based mate recognition that keeps closely related haplochromines distinct, blurring species through hybridisation. As a hard-substrate piscivore — a guild both competing with and preyed upon by the Nile perch — squamulatus was among the most exposed. The listed threats (invasive species, fishing, urban, industrial and agricultural pollution) are exactly the pressures implicated in that wider decline. Whether viable populations persist is genuinely uncertain, which is what the Data Deficient label honestly records.
