Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Victoria — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Astatotilapia desfontainii, sometimes called the blue lip cichlid, holds a singular place in African ichthyology: it is the only cichlid native to the Maghreb, a lone haplochromine stranded in the spring-fed oases and chotts of southern Tunisia and north-eastern Algeria. A relict of a wetter Sahara, it survives in warm, mineral-rich desert water hundreds of kilometres from the nearest cichlid populations to the south. That isolation is now also its peril — groundwater pumped out from beneath the oases to irrigate date palms has dried most of its habitat, and the IUCN lists it as Critically Endangered, clinging on at perhaps a single site near Tozeur.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was first described in 1802 by the French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacépède, in the fourth volume of his Histoire naturelle des poissons, as Sparus desfontainii — a striking misplacement, since Sparus is a genus of marine sea breams. (The Catalog of Fishes records both the original spelling desfontainii on page 54 and a variant desfontaines on page 160; the holotype is unique and now lost, and the type locality is simply given as Tunisia.) Note that some popular accounts attribute the original name to the genus Labrus; the primary literature and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes are clear that the original combination was Sparus. The fish was subsequently shuffled through several genera as African cichlid taxonomy matured: Boulenger placed it in Tilapia (as Tilapia desfontainesi) in 1899, and through much of the twentieth century it was treated as a Haplochromis — the name under which the IUCN still assesses it (Haplochromis desfontainii). The Catalog of Fishes currently lists it as valid in Astatotilapia, a genus Pellegrin erected in 1904, and that is the combination FishBase and most recent authors use. The genus name itself nods to a diagnostic quirk: Astatotilapia derives from the Greek astatos, 'unstable' or 'variable', a reference to the way the teeth change form as the fish grows. Within the Haplochromini — the vast tribe that produced the explosive species flocks of Lakes Victoria, Malawi and the smaller East African lakes — Astatotilapia desfontainii sits at the extreme north-western edge of the radiation, one of only a handful of haplochromines isolated far from the others; its closest relatives are the Levantine Astatotilapia flaviijosephi and an undescribed lineage of the Lake Chad basin, from which the Saharan Astatotilapia tchadensis of the Ounianga lakes in Chad was recently split (Trape 2016).

Morphology

This is a medium-sized, typically haplochromine cichlid: a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, a fairly large bullish head, and a rounded caudal fin. FishBase gives a maximum of 6 in total length, and hobbyist accounts of captive fish are consistent with that — males to roughly 5–6 in, females noticeably smaller. Coloration is understated rather than gaudy. Mature males are an olive to greenish ground colour, each flank scale carrying a small iridescent blue-green spot so that the whole fish shifts in hue with the angle of the light; females and juveniles are plainer and browner. The anal fin bears the egg-spots ('ocelli') typical of haplochromine males — accounts report somewhere between three and nine — which play a role in spawning. Sexual dimorphism is real but modest: males grow larger and are more strongly coloured, while ripe females are deeper-bodied and duller. The teeth are diagnostic at the genus level: the outer jaw teeth are uni- or bicuspid (not the obliquely truncated teeth of true Haplochromis), the inner teeth small and tricuspid, with the central rows of the lower pharyngeal jaw somewhat enlarged.

Habitat

Astatotilapia desfontainii is a creature of the desert margin. Its entire world is a scatter of spring-fed oases, sinkholes, irrigation channels and small wadis on the northern fringe of the great endorheic salt pans — the chotts — of southern Tunisia and the adjacent Ziban region of north-eastern Algeria. Historically it was recorded from the Tolga and Ziban oases in Algeria and from several locations north of the Chott el Djerid in central Tunisia, around Tozeur, Nefta and Gafsa; a 1982 expedition still found it at Nefta in Tunisia and in the Tolga oasis area of Algeria. These are warm waters: FishBase records a temperature envelope of about 64–82 °F, but the fish concentrates in thermally influenced, spring-fed channels, and keepers report it thriving and breeding at the high end of that range and beyond. The water is hard and well mineralised, often near-neutral to distinctly alkaline — conditions one would expect of groundwater rising through Saharan carbonate and evaporite rock, and a far cry from the soft, acidic blackwater of most aquarium cichlids. Recorded depths are shallow, on the order of a metre or two in the springs, ditches and oasis pools it occupies; no deep-water occurrence is documented. As a relict of the African Humid Period, when the Sahara was green some five to ten thousand years ago, it is a survivor of a once far larger and now fragmented range.

Feeding

The blue lip cichlid is a generalist omnivore — FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.1, mid-way up the food web. In the wild it takes aquatic insects and their larvae, other small invertebrates and algae from the spring channels and oasis pools, and likely small fish or fry when available; in captivity it accepts prepared cichlid foods readily and is fond of snails, worms and frozen invertebrates. In the impoverished, low-diversity communities of these desert waters — where a typical oasis holds only a handful of fish species — a hardy, flexible omnivore like this is well placed to make a living on whatever the season provides, which is part of why a single cichlid lineage was able to persist here at all while the surrounding rivers dried.

Mating

Like the great majority of haplochromines, Astatotilapia desfontainii is a polygynous mouthbrooder with a lek-style courtship rather than a pair bond. When a male comes into spawning condition he becomes territorial and excavates a shallow pit or depression in sand or fine gravel, usually at the base of a rock, and defends it. He then courts passing gravid females with the shimmying, circling display characteristic of the tribe, drawing a receptive female down into the pit. Males are semi-aggressive — toward rival males and toward unready females — so in confined spaces the courtship can tip into harassment, the usual haplochromine caution. There is no lasting pair: once spawning is complete the male's role ends and he plays no part in raising the brood.

Breeding

Reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding, as in its Levantine sister species Astatotilapia flaviijosephi. Spawning follows the classic haplochromine 'egg-dummy' sequence: the female lays a few eggs in the pit, immediately turns to take them into her mouth, and is drawn to nip at the egg-spots on the male's trailing anal fin, prompting him to release milt that fertilises the clutch already in her buccal cavity. Broods are modest — keepers report on the order of fifty or more fry from a single spawning, consistent with the species' small size. The female incubates the eggs and larvae in her mouth for roughly two and a half weeks (about eighteen days is the figure reported by aquarists) before releasing free-swimming fry, which she continues to shelter, taking them back into her mouth at any threat, for up to a further two weeks. The clutch size and the fine detail of incubation come largely from captive observation rather than field study, and should be read as such. Given the species' precarious wild status, that captive breeding has taken on conservation weight: a small founder stock has been propagated and distributed among hobbyists in North America and Europe expressly to keep the lineage alive in aquaria.

In the aquarium

Astatotilapia desfontainii is rarely encountered in the hobby, and a keeper who obtains one has almost certainly sourced it from one of the small, dedicated conservation-minded circles that have been propagating founder stock deliberately. That rarity itself shapes how the fish should be kept: thoughtless purchase from an unknown source, and negligent husbandry, undermine the point of maintaining it. That said, care requirements are genuinely undemanding — if anything more forgiving than those of many East African haplochromines — and the fish is a reasonable project for an experienced cichlid keeper rather than an absolute specialist.

A single male with two or three females can be housed comfortably in a tank of 47 in / 48 inches or longer (55 US gal or more). Because Astatotilapia desfontainii comes from hard, alkaline desert spring water, tap water in most European and North American cities is suitable without modification; target pH 7.5–8.5 and general hardness in the region of 10–20 °dH. Soft or acidic water is not appropriate. Temperature should be held in the 72–79 °F range for routine maintenance; FishBase documents a wild envelope of 64–82 °F, and captive reports confirm the fish tolerates short dips toward the low end — an unusual tolerance for a cichlid of tropical African origin, a consequence of the Maghreb's cool winters. A reliable heater set around 75 °F is the sensible default.

The furnishings should echo a sandy, rocky desert-spring environment: a sand or fine-gravel substrate, some flat or rounded rocks arranged to create pit sites and line-of-sight breaks, and minimal planting (the fish will excavate, and the sparse oasis environment it comes from is not heavily vegetated). Leave an open central zone of sand — males need a clear area in which to dig a spawning pit. Good filtration and regular water changes matter more than elaborate décor; this is a fish from a marginal, shallow water body where oxygen and clarity are not guaranteed, so it is hardy, but that hardiness should not be mistaken for an invitation to neglect water quality.

Tankmate selection deserves care. In the wild, Astatotilapia desfontainii shares its oasis pools with only a handful of other species — its community experience is nothing like the crowded rift-lake rocky shoreline. Kept with aggressive or fast-moving cichlids it will be harassed; kept with fish requiring soft, acidic water the chemistry compromise is unfair to one party or the other. Modest, robust companions that tolerate hard, alkaline conditions — other Maghrebi or Levantine fish, or simply kept as a species tank — are the safest choices. Males become territorial at spawning time and will pursue females relentlessly in small tanks; extra females and broken sightlines reduce the risk of a female being harassed to exhaustion, a common error that kills brooding fish.

Breeding follows haplochromine convention: maternal mouthbrooding, with females incubating the clutch for roughly eighteen days before releasing free-swimming fry. The female should be given a quiet refuge — a corner with rocks or a divider — if she is holding, because continued male attention may cause her to spit early. Broods are modest (around fifty fry is the figure reported by aquarists) and the fry are manageable in a species tank without separation, as long as the male is distracted or partitioned. Given the conservation status of this fish, every successful captive spawn is genuinely meaningful — noting breeding records and sharing surplus stock through specialist cichlid societies is worthwhile practice, not vanity.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses this fish (under the name Haplochromis desfontainii, the 'blue lip cichlid') as Critically Endangered — uplisted from Endangered to Critically Endangered in the 2022 update, on the assessment by Freyhof and colleagues. The reason is stark and specific. Once spread across the oases north of the Chott el Djerid and into the Algerian Ziban, the species has been extirpated from the great majority of its range and now appears reduced to essentially a single surviving population near Tozeur, in the Chott el Djerid basin. The driver is water: unsustainable abstraction of groundwater to irrigate the region's date-palm agriculture has lowered aquifers and dried the springs and channels the fish depends on, and the last population is reported to persist only because water is artificially pumped into a stream channel that would otherwise run dry. Pollution and introduced non-native fish (the mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki is now widespread across the Maghreb) compound the pressure. The species' plight is a microcosm of a wider crisis: across the Maghreb, the relict freshwater fauna left behind as the Sahara dried is among the most threatened on the continent, squeezed into shrinking spring-fed refugia by abstraction, drought and aquifer depletion — pressures that fall hardest on a narrow-range endemic with nowhere else to go. As the only cichlid native to North Africa, Astatotilapia desfontainii has no congeners nearby to buffer its loss, which lends real urgency both to protecting the Tozeur refuge and to the captive populations now maintained as insurance.
