Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis stanleyi was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1906, in his paper 'Descriptions of new fishes discovered by Mr. E. Degen in Lake Victoria' (Annals and Magazine of Natural History, Series 7, volume 17, page 444). The original combination is Haplochromis stanleyi, and the type series — syntypes held at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1906.5.30.352, .362–363 and .364) — came from Bunjako and Buganga, on the Ugandan shore of Lake Victoria. It is therefore a Lake Victoria fish, despite an eponym that points toward the Congo and the great lakes further west; the FishBase practice of attributing the name to 'Regan, 1906' is an error, and the species index there resolves the page to Haplochromis microdon, which is exactly the heart of the problem with this name.
From the outset stanleyi sat uneasily in the literature. Boulenger himself, in his later 'Catalogue of the Fresh-water Fishes of Africa' (1915), used the name in a composite, 'part' sense, and when Charles Tate Regan revised the Lake Victoria Haplochromis in 1922 he referred Boulenger's stanleyi material into Haplochromis microdon (Boulenger, 1906), the small-toothed predator described in the same 1906 paper. The phrase 'Haplochromis stanleyi (non Boulenger, 1906)' that appears in synonymies marks this misapplication: the name had been applied to more than one thing, and Regan's act tied the bulk of it to microdon. M. J. P. van Oijen's systematic revision of the piscivorous Victoria haplochromines (1991) and his generic classification of the flock (1996) carried the name forward in the same subordinate way — 'mentioned in several accounts in the genus Haplochromis ... as in part.' In current usage microdon is placed in the genus Lipochromis, the oral-shelling paedophages of Lake Victoria, so stanleyi is best read today as a junior name swept into that complex rather than as an independently diagnosable species. The atlas keeps the historical heading Haplochromis, the genus under which the name was coined and is most often searched.
Morphology
Because the name has not been treated as a valid, separately diagnosable species in modern work, there is no rediagnosis to draw on — the only primary description is Boulenger's brief 1906 account of the type material from Bunjako and Buganga. He characterised the fish by its dentition: teeth in three or four series in both jaws, the outer largest and either conical or bicuspid, the inner rows minute and tricuspid, with the lower jaw slightly the longer. That small, fine, weakly cuspidate dentition set over a somewhat projecting lower jaw is consistent with the wide-mouthed predatory build that later led Regan to unite stanleyi with microdon — a fish adapted to engulfing soft prey whole rather than to crushing or scraping. Like other members of the Victoria flock it would have been a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed haplochromine of modest size (the microdon complex matures well under 6 in). Beyond the dental characters, no reliable colour pattern, fin-count range or sexual-dimorphism description can be attached specifically to stanleyi without overreaching the source, and the original 1906 plates and text survive only as scanned images, so finer meristics are not reproduced here.
Habitat
The type localities, Bunjako and Buganga, lie within the northern, Ugandan part of Lake Victoria — the vast, shallow equatorial lake (mean depth around 131 ft, maximum near 262 ft) shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania and drained ultimately to the Nile. Boulenger's material was collected for him by E. Degen along these inshore waters in the first years of the twentieth century, before the ecological upheavals that would transform the lake. Lake Victoria water is warm, well-oxygenated near the surface and moderately alkaline: temperatures through the inhabited upper layer run roughly 75–81 °F and pH is typically mildly alkaline, on the order of 7.1 to 9.0, over soft to moderately mineralised water. As a member of the microdon-type predatory guild the fish would have ranged over inshore and sublittoral bottoms rather than the deep open water; FishBase gives a depth band of about 7–36 ft for microdon, a reasonable proxy for the habitat the stanleyi types came from. No in-situ chemistry was recorded specifically for the type series.
Feeding
Trophically, stanleyi belongs with the predators of the flock. Its weakly cuspidate, multi-series dentition and slightly projecting lower jaw are the signature of a fish that takes soft animal prey, and Regan's referral of the material to Haplochromis microdon places it squarely in what is now the genus Lipochromis — the Lake Victoria oral-shelling paedophages and soft-prey predators, fish that engulf eggs, embryos and larvae (often by seizing a mouthbrooding female and forcing her to release her brood) and small fishes whole. FishBase estimates a trophic level near 4.0 for microdon, consistent with a carnivore high in the food web. No gut-content study is attributable to stanleyi specifically; the feeding picture is inferred from its dentition and from the diet of the complex into which the name has been folded, and is presented here on that basis rather than as a direct observation of this nominal species.
Mating
No courtship or pair-formation behaviour has ever been described for stanleyi as such. What can be said is general to the Lake Victoria haplochromine radiation, to which it belongs: these are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders in which males, not pairs, hold the reproductive initiative. Breeding males develop bright nuptial colour and display to ripe females over a small territory or lek-like patch, using fin-flares and the egg-spot markings on the anal fin as part of the spawning ritual; females, more cryptically coloured, choose among displaying males. There is no lasting pair bond and the male contributes no parental care. This is the reproductive grammar shared across the flock, and it is the most that the evidence supports for this particular name.
Breeding
Spawning has not been documented for stanleyi, and given its uncertain taxonomic status it almost certainly never will be under that name. By the near-universal pattern of the Lake Victoria flock it would have been a maternal (ovophile) mouthbrooder: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after laying — frequently snapping at the egg-spots on the male's anal fin to draw in milt — and incubates the clutch buccally for roughly two to three weeks, releasing free-swimming fry that may shelter back in her mouth when threatened. Clutch sizes in small Victoria haplochromines of this body size are modest, commonly on the order of a few dozen large, yolky eggs (genus-typical figures for the flock run from roughly 20 to 80), reflecting the trade-off between egg size and the limited capacity of the mother's buccal cavity. All of these figures are flock-typical values offered to fill out the picture, not measurements taken from stanleyi itself.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis stanleyi is not an aquarium fish. It is not collected, imported or traded under this name; it has no established hobby presence, no photographs in circulation, and — because it is regarded as part of the Haplochromis (Lipochromis) microdon complex rather than a distinct species — nothing is reliably sold as 'stanleyi' today. Any keeping experience that exists belongs to its umbrella species, the predatory microdon-group paedophages, which are demanding subjects suited only to specialists running dedicated Lake Victoria projects: they need hard, alkaline water (pH well above 7.5), warm temperatures around 77–81 °F, and — because they are equipped to rob mouthbrooding females of their broods — cannot be trusted around conspecifics or other breeding cichlids. For the ordinary hobbyist the honest answer is that this is a museum and literature fish, encountered on a specimen label or in a 1906 species list, not in a tank.
Conservation
Haplochromis stanleyi has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — there is no assessment under this name, which is consistent with its treatment as a synonym rather than a valid species. Its umbrella taxon, Haplochromis (Lipochromis) microdon, is by contrast listed as Critically Endangered, and that status reflects the broader catastrophe of the Lake Victoria cichlid flock. From the 1980s onward the explosive proliferation of the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), compounded by eutrophication, declining water clarity and the seasonal expansion of deoxygenated bottom water, drove an estimated several hundred haplochromine species to extinction or to the brink — one of the largest vertebrate mass extinctions of the modern era. The piscivorous and paedophagous specialists, the guild to which the stanleyi name belongs, were among the hardest hit, since they sat high in a food web that the perch invasion dismantled. Whether any population answering to Boulenger's stanleyi types still exists is unknown; the name's fate is bound to that of the imperilled microdon complex within which it now sits.
