Nannacara quadrispinae is a diminutive dwarf cichlid from the western edge of the Orinoco delta in eastern Venezuela, a fish that spent decades in the aquarium hobby as the unnamed "Nannacara sp. Venezuela" before Wolfgang Staeck and Ingo Schindler formally described it in 2004. It is the only member of its genus that routinely carries four — sometimes five — spines in the anal fin, the meristic quirk that gives the species its name. Like its close relative the golden dwarf cichlid (Nannacara anomala), it is a small, strongly dichromatic fish of warm, soft, leaf-littered blackwater streams, in which a drab male and a far smaller female reverse their colours entirely once she takes sole charge of a clutch of eggs.

Taxonomy & naming

Nannacara quadrispinae was described by the German cichlid specialists Wolfgang Staeck and Ingo Schindler in 2004, in the Dresden museum journal Zoologische Abhandlungen (volume 54, pages 155–161). The holotype, an adult male of 1.5 in standard length (register MTD F 27890), and eighteen paratypes are held in the fish collection of the Museum für Tierkunde Dresden; the type series was collected by the two authors in April 1992 from the río Amana, a tributary of the río Guanipa, and from the nearby río Mapirito, both in the state of Monagas in northeastern Venezuela. The fish was, however, known long before it had a name. Leonard Schultz had reported three Venezuelan Nannacara as early as 1949; Kullander and Nijssen (1989) noticed that these delta specimens carried four anal-fin spines and might therefore be distinct, and Kullander and Prada-Pedreros (1993) listed the population as the undescribed "Nannacara sp. (Venezuela)," a trade and literature label later carried by Linke and Staeck (1997) and by Staeck and Schindler (2000). The genus Nannacara, erected by C. Tate Regan in 1905, is a small assemblage of South-American dwarf cichlids in the tribe Cichlasomatini. Nannacara quadrispinae belongs to the Nannacara-anomala species complex, a group united by a reduced count of only fourteen caudal-fin rays (against sixteen in other Nannacara and in cichlids generally) together with Nannacara anomala, Nannacara taenia and Nannacara aureocephalus. Staeck and Schindler cautioned that this complex is more diverse than its handful of valid names suggests, with several undescribed colour forms still awaiting adequate material.

Morphology

This is a very small cichlid. The largest type specimen measured 1.5 in in standard length — roughly 1.5 in in total length — and dominant aquarium males reach only about that size, while females remain conspicuously smaller, at around 1.5 in total length or less. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with evenly arched dorsal and ventral profiles, a short caudal peduncle, a moderately elongate rounded head and a slightly projecting lower jaw. The single feature that sets the species apart from every other Nannacara is its anal fin: where congeners have three spines, Nannacara quadrispinae normally has four, and in about six per cent of fish even five, a count Staeck and Schindler found in 94 per cent of the specimens they examined. Supporting differences include a usual seventeen (rather than sixteen) dorsal-fin spines, a deeper and more robust body, and a broader space between the eyes. Coloration is strongly dependent on sex and mood. Dominant males are an iridescent metallic green with a more yellowish head, a grey dorsal fin edged in a thin red margin over a pale blue submarginal band, and a blue, black-edged anal fin; the iris is a dusky gold to orange, and a dark horizontal stripe may run from the eye to the caudal base. Non-breeding females are a plain beige to light brown with a single orange stripe below the dark lateral band. The transformation comes with motherhood: a brooding female turns very dark and develops an intense pattern of black markings — a second horizontal band along the back and six vertical bars down the flanks, the lower head blackening as well — a high-contrast "warning" livery typical of maternal Nannacara.

Habitat

Nannacara quadrispinae is endemic to the western tributaries of the lower río Orinoco, in an area of roughly 8°40′–10°10′N and 62°20′–63°10′W within the state of Monagas in northeastern Venezuela — effectively the inland margin of the Orinoco delta. Staeck and Schindler collected it across the drainages of the río Amana, río Mapirito, río Guanipa, río Tigre, río Morichal Largo, Morichal Morrocoy and río Uracoa, with an additional historical record from the río San Juan near Caripito. The fish favours clearwater and blackwater streams, or the tea-coloured mixture of the two. In-situ measurements at several sites give an acidic pH of 4.9–6.2, water that is exceptionally soft (both total and temporary hardness below 1 °dH) and dilute (conductivity just 10–50 µS/cm), and a marked seasonal temperature swing — about 84–88 °F in the April dry season but only 75–79 °F in August. It is a shore fish of extremely shallow water, living in the bank zone in only about 4–15.5 in of water. There it shelters either in thick mats of fallen leaves or amongst aquatic and flooded marginal plants such as Cabomba aquatica, Chara, Nymphaea, Echinodorus and the water hyacinths Eichhornia azurea and E. crassipes. Abundance tracks shelter closely: where a deep leaf layer offers cover, the authors sometimes netted more than one adult per metre of shoreline. It shares these biotopes with other cichlids — Satanoperca mapiritensis, "Aequidens" pulcher, Mesonauta egregius and Apistogramma guttata — as well as the leaffish Polycentrus schomburgkii and small Pyrrhulina and Rivulus.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Nannacara quadrispinae has been published, and FishBase records no gut-content data; its trophic level is given only as a model estimate of about 3.1. Its feeding ecology must therefore be read from its habitat and from its close relatives. As a tiny cichlid of the leaf-litter and marginal-vegetation zone of soft blackwater streams, it is best understood as a micro-predator and generalist invertivore, taking the small crustaceans, insect larvae, worms and other tiny benthic and drifting invertebrates that live in and on the deep mat of decaying leaves where the species concentrates. The dwarf cichlids of this guild glean and pick rather than excavate, working the litter and the surfaces of submerged wood and plants. In the community it is one of the smaller predatory fishes of the leaf bed, both consumer of micro-invertebrates and, given its size, potential prey for the larger cichlids and the leaffish that share its water.

Mating

Staeck and Schindler observed reproduction under aquarium conditions and found Nannacara quadrispinae to be polygynous, in the manner usual for the genus. A male holds a comparatively large territory that contains several potential spawning sites, and within it individual females each establish and defend a smaller sub-territory centred on one of those sites — so a single dominant male may court and tend several females at once. The pronounced size difference between the larger male and the much smaller females, and their divergent coloration, are the visible expression of this harem-like social system. Pair association is brief and entirely centred on the act of spawning: there is no lasting pair bond, and in a defining behaviour of the species the female turns on the male immediately after the eggs are laid, driving him energetically away from the immediate vicinity of the clutch and assuming sole responsibility for it from that point on.

Breeding

Nannacara quadrispinae is a polygynous open or substrate spawner with maternal-only brood care. Like most open brooders the female deposits her eggs on a horizontal surface — Staeck and Schindler found driftwood and the stout leaves of plants the preferred sites, which fits a leaf-litter habitat that offers no stones for cave spawning. Having spawned, the female drives the male off and tends the clutch alone, though the male may indirectly help by keeping predators out of the surrounding territory. Development is rapid in the warm water of the species' range: at 81 °F the eggs hatch about three days after spawning, and the larvae become free-swimming roughly six days after that. Clutch size was not quantified in the original description; congeners in the anomala complex are small, fecund fish, and aquarium accounts of close relatives such as Nannacara anomala report broods on the order of fifty to two hundred or more eggs, a useful genus-typical guide pending direct counts for this species. The dramatic darkening of the brooding female into a black-barred livery is the signal by which she leads and warns her free-swimming fry, a hallmark of maternal care across Nannacara.

In the aquarium

Nannacara quadrispinae reached European aquarists as wild imports under the name "Nannacara sp. Venezuela" well before it was scientifically described, and the people who first studied its behaviour — Staeck and Schindler — did so in their own tanks, so its husbandry is reasonably well understood even though it has never been a common fish in the trade. It is a genuinely small cichlid, and a single male with one or several females is comfortable in a modest tank; anything in the range of 23.5 in and up gives a small harem room, with floor area mattering far more than volume. The decisive husbandry detail is the biotope. These fish come from warm, extremely soft, acidic, leaf-littered streams, and they thrive when that is reproduced: a temperature in the mid-20s to around 81 °F, an acidic pH (the wild range is roughly 4.9–6.2), and very soft, low-conductivity water, ideally tinted and softened with botanicals — leaf litter, alder cones and driftwood — which also supply the cover the species depends on. A deep bed of dead leaves is not decoration but habitat; in the wild, abundance rose and fell with the amount of leaf cover available. Fine sand, driftwood, broad-leaved or floating plants and dim lighting complete a suitable layout, and a horizontal spawning surface such as a flat leaf or piece of wood should be provided rather than the caves favoured by Apistogramma. Feeding is straightforward for a micro-predator of this kind: small live and frozen foods — Artemia nauplii, daphnia, cyclops, microworm, finely chopped bloodworm — keep the fish in colour and breeding condition, supplemented with a quality small-grade dry food. Temperament is that of a peaceful dwarf; outside of breeding it bothers little, but a spawning female becomes fiercely territorial within her small patch and will drive off the male and other fish, so tankmates should be small, peaceful, soft-water species and the tank should offer enough broken-up cover for a harem to partition the floor. The honest caveat is availability: this is a rarely traded, locality-specific fish more likely to be encountered through dwarf-cichlid specialists than in general shops, and soft acidic water plus a botanical-rich setup are prerequisites, not optional refinements.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Nannacara quadrispinae as Least Concern (assessed 19 June 2017 by G. Echevarría, published 2019). The category reflects a large overall extent of occurrence across the western Orinoco-delta drainages, within which at least some subpopulations face no obvious threat and could in principle recolonise areas that are degraded. The assessment is nonetheless candid about pressure on the species: close to 60 per cent of its range has been disturbed by the spread of urban and industrial development, and the rivers of Monagas have been affected by oil-extraction activity, with documented oil spills in the San Juan–Guarapiche drainages and the Golfo de Paria (notably in 2011 and 2017) altering the chemistry of the rivers and smothering the benthos and periphyton on which their food webs rest. The species carries no CITES or CMS listing. As a soft-water specialist confined to a small region of shallow, leaf-littered coastal streams, Nannacara quadrispinae is more exposed to localised habitat degradation than a widespread generalist would be, even though its current Red List status is one of low concern.
