Nannacara aureocephalus, the goldenhead dwarf acara, is a coastal-rivers cichlid of French Guiana and adjacent Brazil, one of the larger members of an otherwise miniature genus. Adult males are unmistakable: the cheek, the area behind the eye and the gill covers light up with an intense metallic gold over a finely reticulated body, while females stay a plain barred fraction of their size. Like its better-known relative the green dwarf acara (Nannacara anomala), it is a maternal cave-spawner — the drab female does all the egg-tending and fry-shepherding, transforming into a bold black-and-white brooding dress while the gaudy male stands guard at the edge of her territory.

Taxonomy & naming

Nannacara aureocephalus was described by the French aquarist-ichthyologist Robert Allgayer in 1983, in the hobby-affiliated journal Revue française des Cichlidophiles (volume 4, number 33), from material collected in French Guiana the previous year. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the holotype as MNHN 1983-0523 in the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris, with paratypes MNHN 1983-0524 and 1983-0525, and gives the type locality as 'Carière Chambaut, localité A,' French Guiana — a coastal-plain site near Cayenne. The genus Nannacara was erected by Regan in 1905 for the small, sexually dichromatic acaras of the Guianas and lower Amazon; aureocephalus is one of roughly half a dozen valid species and, with anomala, anchors what hobbyists call the 'anomala complex' of robust, reticulate-bodied Nannacara as distinct from the more elongate striped forms (Nannacara taenia and allies). The name has stayed stable since description — Kullander & Prada-Pedreros (1993) and Kullander's treatment in the 2003 Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America both retain it as valid — though aquarium stock has occasionally circulated under the erroneous combination 'Pelvicachromis aureocephalus,' an unrelated West African genus. Allgayer originally restricted the species to the Approuague drainage; later collecting (summarized by Keith et al. 2000 and in the French Guiana fish checklist) extended its known range across the coastal rivers, and Eschmeyer now lists the distribution as French Guiana and Brazil.

Morphology

This is a sturdily built dwarf cichlid with pronounced sexual size dimorphism — among the most extreme in the genus. FishBase lists the male at 2.5 in standard length and the female at about 2 in total length, but aquarium and field reports consistently describe males reaching roughly 4 in and occasionally 4.5 in total length under good conditions, while females stay near 2.5 in; the older description by Linke (1984) already gave males to about 4.5 in depending on locality. Females are therefore often little more than half the male's length, and they also differ in build, being noticeably stockier and less laterally compressed than the slim females of Nannacara anomala — a useful field mark, since the two species' juveniles are otherwise nearly inseparable. The body is moderately deep and, in the male, overlaid with a fine net-like reticulation of dark-edged scales that gives a metallic green-to-bronze sheen across the flanks. The diagnostic feature, and the source of both the scientific and common names, is the bright golden-yellow flush that develops on the cheek, the postocular region behind the eye, and the preopercle and opercle of mature males. Ripe females abandon their muted barred pattern when brooding for a bold contrasting dress of black and pale markings — the classic Nannacara maternal signal that advertises a guarding female to her fry and warns off intruders.

Habitat

Nannacara aureocephalus is a fish of the Guiana coastal plain. It is documented from the Approuague basin (the type drainage) and across the lowland rivers of French Guiana including the Mana and Maroni (Marowijne) systems, with records extending east to the Amapá rivers of northern Brazil; it is essentially endemic to this narrow Guianas coastal belt. Within that range it favours shaded, slow or standing water at the margins of forest creeks, swamps, and marshy floodplain pools — the quiet, leaf-littered shallows along the banks rather than open or fast channels. FishBase notes it shelters in 'very shallow zones along the banks with little sunlight,' and habitat depths are reported from about 8 in to 7 ft. The water is typically warm, soft and acidic blackwater stained light tea-brown by leaf litter: field workers report pH values from roughly 4.9 to 6.8 (Staeck 2003 measured pH 4.9–5.7 at some sites), general hardness near zero (0–2 °dGH), very low conductivity, and temperatures spanning about 72–86 °F. The biotope is often choked with aquatic vegetation — water lilies (Nymphaea) rooted on the bottom and bladderwort (Utricularia) drifting at the surface — over a substrate of fallen leaves, roots and stones that provides the cover this secretive cichlid depends on. Its community includes killifishes (Rivulus), pencilfishes (Nannostomus), the leaffish-like Polycentrus schomburgkii, small characins and Corydoras catfishes.

Feeding

The goldenhead dwarf acara is a benthic micro-predator and opportunistic omnivore that works the leaf litter and soft sediment for small invertebrates. In the wild its diet is dominated by aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates — the chironomids, micro-crustaceans, shrimp and insect larvae abundant among the submerged leaves and roots of its blackwater pools. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.2, consistent with a small generalist invertivore rather than a specialist. In captivity it accepts most foods offered but plainly prefers small live and frozen fare — daphnia, cyclops, brine shrimp, mysis and bloodworm — and these bring out the best condition and colour; good-quality flake and granular foods are taken readily as a supplement. As a bottom-and-midwater forager it fills the dwarf-predator niche of the shaded creek margins, gleaning prey from among the litter rather than sifting sand in the manner of the eartheaters.

Mating

Nannacara aureocephalus organises its social life around the female and her chosen spawning site, the pattern typical of the maternal Nannacara. Outside breeding it is a calm, even shy fish, best kept as a pair or as a harem of one male with several females, alongside small peaceful tankmates such as tetras. As a female ripens she claims and defends a small territory centred on a cave or a sheltered overhang and switches into her bold brooding livery; the much larger, gold-headed male courts and, once a pair forms, takes up a complementary role guarding the broader perimeter while the female commands the nest itself. Aggression is modest by cichlid standards for most of the year but rises sharply around spawning, when the female becomes pugnacious in defence of her site and the male polices the territory edge. Because males so badly outsize females, a poorly matched or under-furnished pairing can turn one-sided, so keepers give the female ample cover and retreat space and watch that an over-eager male does not harass a female that is not yet ready.

Breeding

Breeding follows the classic Nannacara maternal cave-spawning template, closely paralleling that of Nannacara anomala. The female deposits her eggs — reported at roughly 80 to 150, with some accounts citing up to about 300 — on the ceiling or wall of a small cave or sheltered cavity, and occasionally in a more exposed spot offering little cover. She alone tends the clutch, fanning and guarding it in her contrasting black-and-pale brooding dress, while the male defends the surrounding territory. An intriguing behavioural note from the hobby literature (Bydžovský, after Linke) is that wild-caught fish reliably spawn inside caves, whereas long-domesticated European strains will sometimes lay on flat stones or the upper surfaces of leaves — the site appears flexible and partly learned. Eggs hatch in about three to five days depending on temperature; the female moves the wrigglers to a safe pit or cavity and then leads the free-swimming fry, which become independent swimmers roughly a week to ten days after hatching. The fry are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered foods from the outset. Soft, warm, acidic water and a varied live-food conditioning diet are the standard triggers, with pH around 5.0–6.0 and temperatures of roughly 73–86 °F reported as productive.

In the aquarium

The goldenhead dwarf acara is an established but relatively uncommon aquarium fish, more often available through European (particularly French) importers and specialist breeders than in the general trade. It is well suited to an experienced keeper willing to provide blackwater conditions; it is not difficult once those are met, but it does poorly in hard, alkaline or dirty water.

Because males grow larger than the genus name 'dwarf' suggests — to 4 in or more — and the fish values floor area over height, a tank of at least 39.5 in length is recommended even though a shallow water column (around 8 in) suits the species; a single pair can spawn in as little as 15–20 US gal, but more room reduces friction. The single most important furnishing is cover: caves, chunks of flowerpot, coconut shells, dense planting and a tangle of roots and driftwood give the female spawning sites and give subordinate fish places to escape. A substrate of fine to medium sand and a generous layer of dried beech or oak leaves both suit the fish and gently acidify and stain the water; subdued lighting matches its shaded natural haunts.

Water should be soft and acidic — pH roughly 4.0–6.0 for maintenance (toward 5.0–6.0 for breeding), very low hardness, and a temperature of about 73–86 °F. The species tolerates the warmer end of that range well, reflecting its sun-warmed coastal pools. Frequent small water changes with similarly soft, acidic water keep nitrogenous waste low, to which these blackwater fish are sensitive. Feeding is undemanding (see Feeding), though a live- and frozen-food bias pays off in colour and breeding readiness.

For tankmates, choose small, calm species — pencilfishes, small tetras and similar peaceful characins make natural companions, echoing the wild community. Keep the genus mix clean: do not raise Nannacara aureocephalus and Nannacara anomala together, as their juveniles are essentially indistinguishable and accidental hybridisation or mislabelling is a real risk. The common mistakes are predictable — keeping the fish too hard and alkaline, providing too little cover for an under-sized female to escape a large male, and overfeeding a fish that lives in nutrient-poor water.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Nannacara aureocephalus as Least Concern, assessed on 28 December 2020 by D.C. Taphorn and D. Rodríguez-Olarte. The species is not listed by CITES. As a fairly widespread inhabitant of the French Guiana and adjacent Brazilian coastal rivers — a region that remains among the least disturbed in tropical South America, with extensive intact rainforest — it faces no documented species-level threat, and its populations appear stable. It is harvested in modest numbers for the aquarium trade, but at a level the assessment does not flag as a concern, and the fish's high resilience (a short population doubling time) buffers it further. The broader risks to the Guianas coastal drainages are the familiar ones for the region — localized deforestation, and gold-mining with its attendant sedimentation and mercury contamination of waterways — but none of these is recorded as a present danger to this particular cichlid, which for now is one of the more secure dwarf cichlids of the Guiana shield.
