Taxonomy & naming
Nannacara taenia was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1912, in a short paper titled 'Descriptions of new cichlid fishes from South America in the British Museum' (Annals and Magazine of Natural History, series 8, volume 9, pages 505–507). The name has never been combined into another genus, so it stands today exactly as Regan coined it. The unique holotype (BMNH 1912.2.2.15), with two further specimens (BMNH 1912.2.2.16–17), is held in the Natural History Museum, London. Regan's stated locality — the 'Amazon River at Manáos [Manaus]' — was almost certainly an error of provenance: Kullander & Prada-Pedreros (1993) re-examined the question and concluded the type material very probably came from near Belém, far to the east at the Amazon's mouth, which is where the species has consistently been collected since. The genus Nannacara itself was erected by Regan a few years earlier, in 1905, for the dwarf cichlid Nannacara anomala. Because Nannacara taenia is small, drably patterned and broadly similar in build, the two were long confused; Kullander & Nijssen (1989) at one point treated taenia as a possible synonym of anomala, but Kullander & Prada-Pedreros (1993) re-established it as a valid, distinct species, a status confirmed by Kullander's later checklist treatment (in Reis, Kullander & Ferraris, 2003) and by Wolfgang Staeck's repeated reviews of the genus. It sits in the subfamily Cichlinae, tribe Cichlasomatini, among the New World 'acaras' and their dwarf offshoots.
Morphology
This is a genuinely tiny cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of 2 in standard length, and even full-grown aquarium fish rarely exceed that — keepers report adult females around 2 inches and males a touch smaller. The body is the typical compressed, oval cichlid shape but on a miniature scale. Coloration outside of breeding is deliberately modest: a silvery-white to olive ground crossed by fine longitudinal pin-stripes that run the length of the flank, with mostly clear fins carrying only a little dark pigment in the dorsal and the leading pelvic rays. The species epithet taenia ('band') refers directly to these markings — Regan named it for the dark oblique stripe running from the eye to the interopercle, the broader dark longitudinal stripe from eye to caudal base, and the narrower stripes that edge the rows of body scales. Sexual dimorphism is slight and easily misread, which is much of why the fish was confused with Nannacara anomala for so long. In Nannacara taenia the male is the smaller sex — the reverse of the better-known Nannacara anomala — and the two sexes are otherwise so close in shape and color that telling them apart usually requires netting the fish for close inspection. The dramatic difference appears only when a female comes into spawning condition: she abandons the muted olive for a striking silver overlaid with bold black markings that cross the body in a near-checkerboard, and her eyes darken to an almost menacing black. Juveniles wear yet another livery — a chocolate-brown head and back, an orange-tan belly, a silver dorsal stripe and a boldly barred dorsal fin — markedly more attractive than the adults.
Habitat
Nannacara taenia is a fish of the coastal lowlands at the eastern edge of the Amazon basin. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes summarises its range simply as the 'lower Amazon basin, Brazil,' and field and aquarium records place it specifically in the small drainages around Belém, in the state of Pará — the lower Capim and Guamá rivers and adjacent coastal streams that empty into the estuary near the Amazon's mouth. In freshwater-ecoregion terms this is the Amazonas Estuary & Coastal Drainages (FEOW ecoregion 323), a flat alluvial plain of low-elevation forest streams rather than the great whitewater rivers most Amazonian cichlids evoke. The species is a small, secretive inhabitant of shallow, slow, well-shaded waters among leaf litter, roots and marginal vegetation. Documented in-situ chemistry is sparse, but the habitat is consistently described as soft and slightly acidic, and the fish thrives in captivity at very low mineral content — successful breeders keep it in near-rainwater conditions (pH around 6.5, total dissolved solids as low as 35 ppm). No depth survey exists for so minor a stream fish; like other small leaf-litter cichlids of the region it lives in the shallow margins, on the order of the uppermost metre or two of water. It is benthopelagic, holding to the middle and lower levels of these dim, structure-rich pools.
Feeding
Like its dwarf-cichlid relatives, Nannacara taenia is a small-mouthed micro-predator that works the leaf litter and substrate for tiny invertebrates. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with an insectivore-leaning omnivore taking aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and other small benthic prey along with incidental organic matter. No detailed wild gut-content study has been published for the species, but its captive appetites are revealing: keepers describe it as an enthusiastic, undemanding feeder that accepts flake and freeze-dried foods but visibly relishes live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworm (chironomid larvae), live blackworm, chopped earthworm and, above all, mosquito larvae, which bring fish into spawning condition quickly. In its native streams it occupies the unobtrusive role of a small benthic invertebrate-feeder among the leaf litter, the same niche filled across the Neotropics by Apistogramma and the other diminutive cichlids.
Mating
Nannacara taenia is, by cichlid standards, a peaceable and rather shy fish, but it is far from passive. In the aquarium it is reclusive — newly settled fish hide almost constantly and are seen mainly at feeding time — yet it is also quietly territorial, individuals chasing one another away from chosen patches of cover. As fish come into condition the social order sharpens around the females, who hold and defend small territories centred on a cave or crevice. The species is a maternal cave-spawner with a near-monomorphic appearance, so pair formation is subtle: a ripe female, signalled by her transformation into the bold silver-and-black breeding dress and blackened eyes, claims a spawning site and admits a male to fertilise the clutch, after which the male's role largely ends. This female-led system — modest males, dominant brooding females — is the hallmark of the genus, and in Nannacara taenia the contrast is heightened by the fact that the female is also the larger sex. Where Nannacara anomala is famous for the female's bulldog defence of her brood, Nannacara taenia behaves the same way on a smaller scale: the female does essentially all the territorial and parental work.
Breeding
Breeding follows the classic maternal-cave pattern of the genus and is, by the standards of dwarf cichlids, not difficult once the fish are conditioned. Triggered by warmth, soft acidic water, frequent water changes and a rich diet of live foods, a female selects an enclosed site — in nature a cavity among roots or litter, in the aquarium a clay flowerpot, crock or rock cave — and lays her eggs inside, typically on the ceiling or wall of the chamber, in the manner of Nannacara and Apistogramma generally (the published clutch is small, on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred eggs, as is typical for congeners of this size). From the moment eggs are laid the female alone tends the brood, and she does so with startling aggression for a two-inch fish — guarding the nest so fiercely that she will bite an intruding hand hard enough to be felt. At around 75°F (75 °F) the eggs hatch in roughly two days, and the wrigglers become free-swimming about six days after that; first foods are newly hatched brine shrimp and fine powdered foods. The fry are tiny but grow readily. The male shows little or no parental behaviour; if he contributes at all, he does so unobtrusively, and the female is fully capable of raising the brood — and of cowing every other fish in the tank — entirely on her own. Broods left with the mother are bolder and grow faster than fry stripped to a rearing tank, a sign of how much the young rely on her protection.
In the aquarium
Nannacara taenia is an excellent small-tank cichlid for the patient hobbyist, though it is uncommon in the trade and its quiet, reclusive nature means it is easy to overlook. Because the fish is so small, it does not need a large aquarium: a well-furnished tank in the 15-gallon range comfortably houses a small group, and a single pair needs less. The priorities are cover and calm water. A dimly lit, densely planted or structure-rich layout — broad-leaved Anubias, Java fern, driftwood, leaf litter — over a thin layer of fine sand suits it perfectly, and several caves (upturned flowerpots, crocks, stone shelters) are essential both to give breeding females spawning sites and to defuse the low-level territorial chasing among the fish. Gentle filtration is appropriate; a simple air-driven sponge filter is ideal, as these are fish of still, shaded pools rather than current.
Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral. Reported and recommended ranges run roughly pH 6.0–7.3, with breeders favouring the lower end (around 6.5) and very low dissolved solids; temperature in the low-to-mid 70s °F (about 72–79 °F) is fine for maintenance, with a few degrees of warmth helping to trigger spawning. The species is hardy and adaptable within these limits, but it shows and breeds best in clean, frequently changed soft water — rainwater or RO blends mirror its native chemistry. Feeding is easy: a varied diet of quality flake or micro-pellet supplemented generously with frozen and live invertebrates (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae) keeps the fish in colour and conditions them for spawning.
Temperament makes it a good community fish for the right tank. It is peaceful toward other species and too small to threaten anything but the tiniest tankmates; small, peaceful characins of the kind found alongside it in nature make ideal company and help coax the shy cichlids into the open. The main caution is intraspecific and reproductive: a brooding female becomes intensely territorial and will harry every other inhabitant away from her cave, so in a small tank give her room and plenty of broken sightlines, and avoid crowding the bottom with competing cave-seekers. The most common 'problem' keepers report is simply seeing the fish at all — it is a master of staying hidden — and the most common disappointment is underestimating how completely a tiny female will dominate the tank once she has eggs.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Nannacara taenia as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018, published 2022, by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio). The population trend is listed as unknown, but the assessment notes that even though the species occurs close to urban areas — the Belém region is one of the more heavily settled parts of Amazonia — recent collections suggest it does not appear to suffer significant threats. It carries no CITES listing. The species is only lightly exploited for the aquarium trade, being scarce and unshowy, so collection pressure is negligible. The broader risk, as for all the small endemic fishes of the eastern Amazon estuary and its coastal drainages, comes from the steady expansion of urban Belém and the deforestation and pollution of the small forest streams it depends on; these are landscape-scale pressures rather than any documented decline of this particular cichlid, but they are the backdrop against which a fish with so localised a range should be watched.
