Taxonomy & naming
Oreochromis angolensis was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1973, the foremost authority on the tilapiine cichlids, from Angola's Atlantic coastal drainages. She later treated it within the framework of her 1983 monograph 'Tilapiine Fishes of the Genera Sarotherodon, Oreochromis and Danakilia,' the work that formalised the split of the old genus 'Tilapia' into substrate-spawners and mouthbrooders and that placed angolensis among the maternal mouthbrooders of Oreochromis. The epithet is straightforwardly geographic — angolensis, 'of Angola' — for the country to which the species is endemic. It belongs to the broadly West-Central African assemblage of Oreochromis and has attracted comparatively little taxonomic revision since its description; it is accepted as valid in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and in FishBase, and is one of a small number of tilapias restricted to the Angolan coastal province.
Morphology
Oreochromis angolensis is a moderately sized tilapia, reaching about 8 in in standard length — small to medium for the genus. Its meristics are those of a typical Oreochromis: roughly 15–17 dorsal spines followed by 11–12 soft rays, and three anal spines. The most-cited diagnostic feature is in the dentition: mature males develop enlarged, unicuspid (single-cusped) outer teeth, a feature Trewavas used in separating the species, together with white or pale spots scattered on the fins. In general form it is the standard laterally compressed, deep-bodied tilapia shape, and like its congeners it shows the genus's mood- and breeding-dependent colour changes, with males assuming a darker, higher-contrast nuptial dress when holding territory. Detailed life-colour descriptions are sparse in the literature, a reflection of how little field study the species has received relative to the farmed tilapias.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Atlantic (Angolan) coastal slope, occupying the lower reaches of the Cuanza (Quanza) and Bengo rivers and the lakes and lagoons in their neighbourhood near the coast south and just north of Luanda. These are warm, lowland tropical waters; the species is recorded from both fresh and brackish habitats, consistent with a coastal-river fish that ranges down into the tidally influenced, slightly saline lower reaches and coastal lagoons. The Cuanza is one of Angola's major rivers, reaching the Atlantic about 37 mi south of Luanda, while the Bengo enters the sea just north of the capital; the intervening and adjacent lagoons complete the species' small range. As a benthopelagic tilapia of quiet lowland waters it favours the vegetated margins, backwaters and lagoonal habitats typical of the genus rather than fast, rocky river channels.
Feeding
Direct dietary study of Oreochromis angolensis is limited, but its morphology and generic placement point clearly to the standard Oreochromis pattern: a microphagous grazer and detritivore, taking algae, phytoplankton, fine plant material and the organic detritus of soft lowland sediments. The fine teeth and gill-raker filtering apparatus of the genus suit a fish that works low on the food web as a primary consumer rather than a predator. The enlarged unicuspid male teeth are a sexual-display and possibly territorial feature rather than a sign of carnivory. In its coastal rivers and lagoons it should be read as a broad-spectrum herbivore-detritivore of the kind that makes tilapias such efficient converters of plant and microbial production — the ecological role shared across the genus.
Mating
As an Oreochromis, angolensis is a maternal mouthbrooder with the lek-and-pit mating system characteristic of the genus. Territorial males clear and defend a spawning depression, develop their nuptial colours and fin-spotting, and court females that move through the breeding arena; spawning occurs over the male's pit, after which the female collects the fertilised eggs into her mouth. The white fin spots and enlarged teeth of mature males function in this courtship and territorial signalling. While species-specific breeding observations are scarce, every well-studied member of Oreochromis follows this template — male-built nests, brief pelvic-led spawning, and immediate uptake of the clutch by the female — and there is no morphological or behavioural reason to expect angolensis to differ. Breeding is expected to track the warm, productive conditions of the wet season in its lowland coastal habitats.
Breeding
Reproduction follows the maternal-mouthbrooding model of the genus. After spawning, the female incubates the eggs and then the yolk-sac larvae in her buccal cavity, aerating them by churning, and continues to shelter the free-swimming fry in her mouth when danger threatens before they become independent. As in related Oreochromis, fecundity is modest by fish standards and scales with female size — typically a few hundred eggs — the price paid for the high survival that intensive oral brooding buys. Specific clutch counts, incubation periods and growth data have not been published for angolensis; the figures from better-studied congeners (such as Oreochromis mossambicus and Oreochromis niloticus) are the closest available guide. The species' tolerance of brackish water suggests, as in other estuarine-capable tilapias, that it can breed across a range of salinities in its lower-river and lagoon habitats.
In the aquarium
Oreochromis angolensis is not an aquarium-trade fish in any meaningful sense; it is a regional endemic of limited commercial and ornamental interest, and a hobbyist is very unlikely to encounter it. Any keeping would be a matter of regional fisheries or research rather than the pet trade, and the requirements would simply follow its wild ecology: warm tropical water; tolerance of, or a preference for, slightly hard to brackish conditions reflecting its coastal-river and lagoon origins; a tank or pond large enough for a 8 in tilapia that grazes constantly and digs spawning pits; and a vegetable- and detritus-leaning diet of algae-based pellets and greens. As with all Oreochromis, breeding males become strongly territorial and need space and visual barriers, and the species would be far too large and too plain to recommend as an ornamental even if it were available. In short: a fish of academic and regional-fisheries interest, not a display animal.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Oreochromis angolensis as Least Concern (assessed 1 March 2007). The species is endemic to Angolan coastal drainages — a restricted range — but within that range it is not currently considered to face threats severe enough to qualify it for a threatened category, and it tolerates a span of fresh and brackish conditions that buffers it against any single disturbance. That said, a single-country coastal endemic concentrated in the Cuanza and Bengo systems near a rapidly growing capital region warrants watching: pollution, urban and agricultural runoff, water abstraction, and the spread of introduced tilapias (a problem across the genus's range) are the kinds of pressures that could change its status in future. For now it carries no CITES listing and is of only minor local fisheries interest, and its Least Concern status rests partly on a genuine lack of evidence of decline rather than on detailed monitoring.
