Taxonomy & naming
The species was described in 1884 by the French ichthyologist Henri-Émile Sauvage as Hemichromis schwebischi, from a specimen taken at Franceville on the upper Ogooué River in Gabon; the holotype is held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris (MNHN 1884-0292). The placement in Hemichromis was a product of its era, when the great radiation of African cichlids was still being sorted into a handful of catch-all genera. The fish's true affinities are with the maternal-mouthbrooding tilapias, and it was duly moved through Tilapia and Sarotherodon before settling in Oreochromis. Ethelwynn Trewavas's 1983 monograph, Tilapiine Fishes of the Genera Sarotherodon, Oreochromis and Danakilia, is the standard treatment that fixed it within Oreochromis, and Trewavas & Teugels confirmed the combination in their 1991 review of West African cichlids.
Within the cichlid subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae the genus Oreochromis forms the tribe Oreochromini — the substrate-nesting, exclusively maternal mouthbrooders, a lineage quite separate from the mbuna and haplochromine flocks of the Rift lakes. Oreochromis schwebischi is the characteristic Oreochromis of the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province, and within it the flagship tilapia of the Ogooué. It is sometimes referred to in the older literature and the trade by the generic regional names for tilapia, but it carries no widely settled English common name.
Morphology
Oreochromis schwebischi is a deep-bodied, laterally compressed tilapia reaching about 12 in standard length, a solid mid-sized member of its genus. The fin formula runs to 14–16 dorsal spines and 12–13 soft rays, three anal spines with 9–11 soft rays, and 27–29 vertebrae; the cheek carries scales in two or usually three horizontal rows. As in most tilapias, the dentition tells a developmental and sexual story: the outer teeth are bicuspid and the inner rows tricuspid in juveniles and females, but in maturing males the cusps wear and remodel so that the teeth become unicuspid. Mature males also develop a notably enlarged preorbital bone and thickened jaws, and the upper profile of the head often becomes concave — a heavy-headed look typical of breeding-condition Oreochromis bulls. The male genital papilla is distinctively spade-shaped.
Color is unremarkable for most of the year — a silvery to brassy grey-olive — but the species shows marked sexual dichromatism when sexually active, the hallmark Trewavas used in diagnosing it. Breeding males flush dark and develop red margins on the dorsal and caudal fins. Sexual dimorphism is therefore real and useful: ripe males are larger-jawed, heavier-headed and red-finned, while females and non-breeding fish stay plainer and slimmer.
Habitat
This is a Lower Guinea endemic. Its core range is the Ogooué basin of Gabon — the river that arcs some 1,124 mi across the country's forested interior — together with the neighbouring coastal drainages to the south: the Nyanga, the Kouilou-Niari and the Chiloango, spanning Gabon through the Republic of Congo to the western Democratic Republic of the Congo. The IUCN assessment also lists Cameroon and Angola among countries of occurrence, and there are reports from the Cuanza and the southern Congo-basin fringe in Angola, though some authors treat the species as a strict Lower Guinea endemic and regard the outlying records as needing confirmation. Old reports from Gambia, Senegal and Guinea, far to the northwest, are considered erroneous.
FishBase classes it as a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical fish, but like many lowland tilapias it is tolerant of the brackish water of the lower river and estuary, and it ranges through floodplain lakes, slow river reaches and lagoons as well as the main channel. The clearest in-situ data come from its spawning habitat: nests are built on sandy or loamy bottoms in water 15.5–31.5 in deep, sometimes more sparsely in a metre or more, and the fish retreat to deeper water during the heat of the day to escape high temperatures and strong light. As warm-water equatorial cichlids these are fish of roughly 73–82 °F; the soft to moderately mineralised, near-neutral blackwater-influenced rivers of Gabon put them in a pH band of about 6.0–7.8.
Feeding
Oreochromis schwebischi is a low-trophic-level herbivore and grazer, in keeping with the genus. Examination of stomach contents reported by Trewavas found chiefly algae — mainly unicellular forms or short filaments — the diet of a fish that crops the microalgal and detrital film coating submerged surfaces and the bottom rather than hunting prey. FishBase places its trophic level right at the herbivore floor (about 2.0). Tilapias of this type process fine plant and detrital material with a long gut and a grinding pharyngeal mill, extracting nutrition from low-value, abundant resources; that ecological role as an efficient converter of primary production is precisely what makes Oreochromis species attractive for pond culture across Africa. In its native rivers Oreochromis schwebischi functions as one of the basin's principal grazing tilapias, a mid-water and bottom-associated feeder on algae and organic matter.
Mating
The species is an arena (lek) spawner, the classic Oreochromis reproductive system. Mature males gather and become territorial — FishBase notes the fish is 'occasionally territorial' outside the spawning season but that breeding males hold defended nest sites — each clearing and defending a large excavated crater on the bottom. These nests are striking structures: circular basins 45.5–73 in across, dished to about 8 in deep in the centre, with a rim raised 3 in above the surrounding bed. Females visit the cleared craters, where courtship and spawning take place; the marked nuptial dichromatism of the male — the darkened body and red-edged fins — is the courtship signal on this arena. Spawning happens at night, and the fish move out to deeper, cooler, dimmer water during the day. After eggs are fertilised over the nest the male's role ends, and there is no pair bond: as in all Oreochromis the female alone carries the brood away.
Breeding
Oreochromis schwebischi is an exclusively maternal mouthbrooder. The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them there through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, a strategy that frees the parent from a fixed nest and gives the larvae a mobile, oxygenated refuge from predators. Spawning is seasonal in the wild, concentrated in the dry seasons — roughly June to September and again around February — and individuals can reach maturity at about 6 in. A specific published clutch count for this species is not readily available, but its mouthbrooding congeners are moderately fecund, typically carrying broods on the order of a few hundred to one to two thousand eggs scaled to female size, and FishBase notes its breeding behaviour broadly resembles that of the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Parental care is entirely the female's: she broods the eggs and larvae and continues to shelter the early fry in her mouth when threatened, with no contribution from the male after fertilisation. The seasonal, dry-season timing and the modest maturation size make the species reasonably tractable to propagate, which is part of why it has been trialled in Gabonese fish farming.
In the aquarium
Oreochromis schwebischi is essentially never kept as an ornamental aquarium fish, and nothing about it recommends it for the hobby. It is a 12 in, deep-bodied, digging, algae-grazing tilapia with a male that becomes large-jawed and territorial in breeding condition — far too big, too plain and too rough on tankmates and on planted aquascapes to make sense in a home display. Where it is held in captivity it is in an aquaculture context, in earthen ponds, tanks and floating hatcheries in Gabon, not in glass tanks.
If one did keep it — for conservation, research or grow-out — the requirements follow from its biology. It needs a great deal of space: an adult group wants a pond or a very large tank measured in metres, with a sandy or soft bottom deep enough for males to excavate the broad spawning craters the species builds in the wild. Water should be warm (about 73–82 °F), near-neutral and soft to moderately hard (pH roughly 6.0–7.8), with good filtration to handle the waste load of a heavy-bodied herbivore; its tolerance of brackish water means low salinity is not a problem and can even be useful. Diet is easy — it thrives on algae, vegetable matter and a standard herbivore/omnivore pellet. The practical cautions are those of any large Oreochromis: breeding males are territorial and combative, the fish dig and uproot relentlessly, and — most important for the region — it should never be released or allowed to escape outside its native Lower Guinea range, where, like other farmed tilapias, it could hybridise with or displace local cichlids.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Oreochromis schwebischi as Least Concern (assessed 1 May 2009 by L. da Costa and T. Moelants, published 2010), with the population trend listed as unknown. The assessment records the species across Angola, Cameroon, Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Gabon, and states plainly that no specific threats are known; it notes the likelihood that the species will be used for aquaculture in the future. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. As a fairly widespread, adaptable lowland tilapia that tolerates brackish water and a range of river and floodplain habitats, it is far less exposed than the narrow-range endemics of the same basins.
The broader risks are the ones facing Lower Guinea's freshwaters generally rather than this fish specifically: deforestation and sedimentation in the Ogooué catchment, expanding extractive industry and the perennial tilapia-farming hazard of introduced Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) mixing with native stocks. None of these is documented as a present, population-level danger to Oreochromis schwebischi, but they are the backdrop against which its Least Concern status should be read — and a reason that any aquaculture development built around it should keep native genetic lines intact.
