Taxonomy & naming
The eastern damba was described by the prolific Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1878, in a short paper titled 'Sur deux espèces inédites de Cichloides de Madagascar' ('On two undescribed species of cichlids from Madagascar'), published in the proceedings of the Royal Academy of Sciences at Amsterdam. He named it Paretroplus polyactis, and the binomial has stood unchanged ever since — the species carries no junior synonyms. Bleeker had earlier erected the genus Paretroplus in 1868 for the Malagasy 'damba' cichlids, the name signalling a fish 'near to,' or resembling, the Asian genus Etroplus while differing in its dentition. Paretroplus polyactis sits in the subfamily Etroplinae, a small Gondwanan lineage whose only other living members are the Etroplus and Pseudetroplus of India and Sri Lanka — a disjunct distribution that traces back to the breakup of the Indo-Madagascar landmass tens of millions of years ago and makes the damba among the most evolutionarily isolated of all cichlids. Within Paretroplus, the genus, distribution, and relationships of every species were comprehensively revised by John S. Sparks in his 2008 monograph (Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 314), which combined morphology and molecular data; Paretroplus polyactis falls among the deep-bodied dambas. Its Malagasy names include Masoavotoaka and Borivava, and it is sometimes sold simply as 'tilapia' in eastern markets.
Morphology
Paretroplus polyactis is a deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid with the high back and emarginate (notched) tail characteristic of the genus — a profile that gives several dambas a passing resemblance to marine surgeonfishes. FishBase lists a maximum of 7 in standard length from the type material examined by Sparks (2008), but hobby and fisheries accounts routinely cite larger fish of roughly 10–12 in total length, so this is a substantial cichlid. The fin counts run to 16–18 dorsal spines and 15–18 soft dorsal rays, with 7–10 anal spines and 13–15 anal soft rays. Two features make the species unmistakable. The first is its pigmentation: the entire flank, and parts of the head, is overlaid with a chain-link or diamond-mesh pattern produced by dark scale margins against lighter scale centres, and unlike its congeners the full series of vertical lateral bars stays strongly pigmented and spotted at every size. The second is the eye — in life Paretroplus polyactis has a bright red iris, a trait it shares within the genus only with the elongate P. lamenabe. The vivid colour is reflected in the Malagasy name 'Masoavotoaka,' glossed by hobbyists as 'eyes bloodshot from drinking rum.' Living fish also carry reddish, orange, and brown tones; Sparks read the species epithet as an allusion to this sunlit colouration. Sexual dimorphism is not strongly marked in the available accounts: as in most substrate-spawning cichlids, ripe females are fuller-bodied, but no reliable, consistent external sex difference has been documented.
Habitat
Paretroplus polyactis is the eastern outlier of an overwhelmingly northwestern genus. Where most dambas are restricted to the rivers and floodplain lakes of arid northwest Madagascar, this species spans almost the entire eastern coast of the island, an unusually broad latitudinal range for a Malagasy cichlid. FishBase records it from the eastern seaboard and specifically from the Mananjary River, and it occurs through the lagoon-and-canal systems of the wet east coast (the Pangalanes belt) as well as the lower courses of the many short rivers that drain the eastern escarpment to the Indian Ocean. Crucially, it is the only Paretroplus that readily enters brackish water: FishBase classes it as a freshwater and brackish, demersal, tropical fish, and it is found in coastal lagoons and estuarine lower reaches as well as further upstream in pure freshwater. This is a bottom-oriented fish of warm lowland waters; precise in-situ chemistry has not been widely published, but its occupancy of coastal lagoons and tidal river mouths implies a tolerance of conditions from soft fresh water up through measurable salinity, and warm tropical temperatures throughout. Its ability to live where its freshwater-bound relatives cannot is a large part of why it remains comparatively secure.
Feeding
Like all members of the genus, Paretroplus polyactis is an omnivore rather than a dietary specialist — a point worth stressing because of the genus's superficial resemblance to the Asian Etroplus suratensis, which is a dedicated herbivore. The damba instead take a mixed benthic diet, and FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 2.8, consistent with a generalist that works the bottom for invertebrates, plant and detrital material, and other small food items. Robust pharyngeal jaws — a recurring feature of the deep-bodied dambas — suit a fish that can crush harder-shelled prey such as molluscs alongside softer fare. In its coastal-lagoon and lower-river habitats it functions as a mid-sized benthic forager, and no evidence supports a strictly predatory or strictly herbivorous diet for the species.
Mating
Detailed observations of courtship in Paretroplus polyactis specifically are lacking, but the reproductive biology of the genus is reasonably well established and consistent across the dambas studied. Paretroplus are biparental substrate spawners that form pairs and defend a territory, with both parents sharing brood care in a manner often compared to that of Central American cichlids. Malagasy fishermen report that the breeding season falls in the latter half of the rainy season, when warming, rising waters presumably trigger pairing — though this timing has not been confirmed by direct study. What is clear is that, as a pair-bonding substrate spawner, the species establishes and guards a spawning site rather than holding a harem or mouthbrooding, and that the pre-spawning phase centres on cooperative site selection and territory defence by an established male–female pair.
Breeding
Paretroplus polyactis is a biparental substrate spawner. The eggs are deposited on a firm surface and tended by both parents, with the pair sharing guarding and fanning duties and continuing to defend the free-swimming fry — the genus-typical pattern. Across the genus, preferred natural spawning sites are thought to be submerged wood, while captive dambas have accepted rocks, flowerpots, ceramic tubes, and artificial caves as substitutes; clutch sizes for the genus run on the order of a few hundred eggs. For Paretroplus polyactis itself, however, breeding has proved frustratingly elusive: it is one of the dambas that, as of the hobby literature, had not been successfully bred in captivity despite repeated attempts in both France and Florida — a notable contrast to relatives such as P. maculatus, Paretroplus kieneri, and Paretroplus menarambo, which have been spawned in dedicated conservation-breeding programmes. A general obstacle with captive dambas is a strong tendency for the parents to eat their own eggs, which has made artificial incubation of stripped clutches a common workaround for the more cooperative species. The specific triggers, clutch size, and fry-development timeline for wild Paretroplus polyactis remain undocumented.
In the aquarium
The eastern damba is, in practical terms, an extremely rare fish in the hobby and not one with an established husbandry record — it has been kept and attempted by specialists working on Madagascar's cichlids, but unlike a handful of its relatives it had not been reliably bred in captivity as of the available accounts. Any keeping notes are therefore extrapolated from the genus and from its known biology rather than from a deep aquarium tradition, and the species should be regarded as a project fish for advanced keepers, public aquaria, and conservation programmes rather than a general-trade cichlid.
What the biology implies is clear enough. This is a large, deep-bodied cichlid that reaches 10–12 in, so it needs a big tank — well upward of 120 US gal for an adult or pair, with a long footprint that gives a territorial substrate-spawning pair room to establish and retreat. A sand or fine-gravel bottom suits a benthic forager, and submerged wood and a few large flat surfaces or caves provide the kind of spawning sites the genus favours. Robust mechanical and biological filtration and a generous water-change schedule are advisable for a fish of this size and appetite.
Water chemistry should reflect its warm, lowland, salt-tolerant origins: tropical temperatures and a near-neutral to mildly alkaline pH are appropriate, and — uniquely among the dambas — this species tolerates brackish conditions, so a little added marine salt is well within its natural envelope rather than a stressor. Diet is straightforward for an omnivore: a varied menu of sinking pellets, frozen and live invertebrates, and some plant or vegetable matter will keep it in condition. Tankmates should be chosen for size and temperament — large, robust, non-nippy companions that can hold their own without being swallowed — and prospective breeders should expect the same egg-predation hurdle reported across the genus. The honest summary is that this is a fish kept by very few people, with husbandry still being worked out.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Paretroplus polyactis as Least Concern, assessed in 2016 by T. Ravelomanana and J.S. Sparks, with a population trend listed as decreasing. That comparatively reassuring category is striking against the backdrop of its genus: Paretroplus as a whole is one of the most threatened cichlid radiations on Earth, with several species Critically Endangered or feared extinct in the wild and surviving chiefly through captive-breeding programmes. Paretroplus polyactis escapes the worst of this for two reasons given in the assessment and in Sparks's revision — it occupies an extensive latitudinal range across the whole eastern coast, and it tolerates brackish water, a habitat where the introduced tilapia and snakeheads that have devastated the northwestern dambas do not thrive. It is therefore not considered in immediate danger of extinction. The pressures are nonetheless real and the Red List flags overfishing, deforestation, habitat loss, and competition and predation from introduced species. The fish is highly prized as food by the Malagasy and commands a high price in markets, and observers have noted in recent decades a decline in both the abundance and the size of Paretroplus polyactis offered for sale along the east coast. As Sparks (2008) cautioned, if the rate of habitat destruction across eastern Madagascar is not slowed, the status of even this most resilient damba could change quickly.
