Taxonomy & naming
Paretroplus menarambo was described in 1996 by the French aquarist-ichthyologist Robert Allgayer, in the journal Revue Française des Cichlidophiles, from fish collected in the floodplain lakes of the middle Sofia drainage of northwestern Madagascar. The holotype (MZUSP 3653) is held at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo, with paratypes split between São Paulo and the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris; the type locality is given as 'Lac Sarodrano, Potamasina, bassin de la Sofia, Madagascar.' The species had first been brought to scientific attention in 1992, when the French cichlid explorers Jean-Claude Nourissat and Patrick de Rham encountered it at Lake Sarodrano. The genus Paretroplus was erected by Pieter Bleeker in 1868 and is endemic to Madagascar; it forms, together with Etroplus of southern India and Sri Lanka, the small subfamily Etroplinae — a Gondwanan relict lineage that sits near the base of the cichlid family tree and whose disjunct India–Madagascar distribution is a textbook signature of ancient continental drift. John Sparks's monographic 2008 revision of the Etroplinae (Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 314) confirmed the validity of Paretroplus menarambo, placed it within the 'deep-bodied' clade of Paretroplus alongside its close relative Paretroplus maculatus, and re-examined the type material. The diagnosis is unambiguous: Paretroplus menarambo is set apart from every congener by its pinstriped flank pattern of numerous longitudinal spot-rows, plus a conspicuous black interorbital stripe between the eyes and a dark suborbital blotch beneath each eye.
Morphology
This is a tall, strongly laterally compressed cichlid with large overlapping scales and a steep forehead — the deep, almost disc-like silhouette shared by the deep-bodied Paretroplus. The largest specimen Sparks examined for his 2008 revision measured 6.5 in (about 6.5 in) in standard length, roughly 8 in in total length; in aquaria, where fish are well fed and long-lived, the species is reported to reach at least 10 in total length. Ground colour shifts with age and mood from pale gold in juveniles to a striking adult palette of blue-grey through almost creamy white, overlaid by the diagnostic pinstriping — longitudinal series of black spots produced by one large spot on each scale. The dorsal, anal and the emarginate (crescent-moon) caudal fins carry a vivid red margin, and iridescent pale blue-green washes the face and the unpaired fins; mature fish are frequently likened to marine surgeonfishes for their elegance. A black stripe runs across the forehead between the eyes and a dark blotch sits below each eye, both intensifying in breeding dress, when the body pales and the chin and underside darken. Behind the lips lie the genus's signature feeding apparatus: well-developed pharyngeal tooth plates bearing strong, partly fang-like teeth built for crushing snails. Sexual dimorphism is slight and unreliable — the sexes cannot be told apart on colour, though males' fins are reported to be marginally longer and more pointed than females'.
Habitat
Paretroplus menarambo is endemic to the floodplain lakes of the Bemarivo River, the major north-flowing tributary of the Sofia River in northwestern Madagascar (the Northwestern Madagascar freshwater ecoregion). Historically it was known from several lakes in that system, including the type locality, Lac Sarodrano; today its only confirmed wild population survives in Lac Tseny, a 760-hectare lake in the Sofia Region. These are warm, fairly hard, alkaline lowland lakes set in grassy hill country, floored with pale sand and fringed by reed beds of Phragmites. The defining feature for this fish is the sunken forest along the western and inshore margins — drowned trees whose braided roots and submerged branches shelter invertebrate-rich algal growth and provide the cichlids' breeding grounds while shielding them from gill nets. Field measurements at Lac Tseny put mean depth at roughly 13 ft (about 4.0 ± 5 ft across mapping transects), with deeper holes; lake level swings strongly between the January–April rains and the long dry season, when the lake can become isolated from the Bemarivo. In-situ water near the menarambo grounds runs warm and alkaline: pH around 7.3–7.5 and temperatures of about 75–85 °F, over a substrate of light sand. The fish typically occupies the mid-water and near-bottom zone close to the sunken timber rather than the open pelagic lake.
Feeding
No formal gut-content study of wild Paretroplus menarambo has been published, but its trophic role is well inferred from anatomy and captive behaviour: it is a durophagous molluscivore. The strongly developed pharyngeal tooth plates and stout, fang-like pharyngeal teeth are the crushing mill of a snail-eater, and in aquaria the fish strip tanks of snails — including hard-shelled Malayan burrowing snails — within minutes. Like its congeners it also works the substrate, sifting mouthfuls of sand for benthic invertebrates and browsing algal and biofilm growth on submerged wood. In Lac Tseny the reed margins and sunken forest support dense populations of crustaceans and other invertebrates that feed both adults and young. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 2.8, consistent with a benthic invertebrate specialist rather than a piscivore. In captivity it proves an unfussy, enthusiastic feeder that takes quality dried foods, frozen invertebrates (bloodworm, mysis, brine shrimp, daphnia) and live snails with equal appetite.
Mating
Pinstripe dambas are gregarious as juveniles and sub-adults but become pugnacious toward their own kind, so reproduction is built on pair formation out of a group rather than on solitary territoriality. Keepers consistently report that fish must be raised in shoals of at least six: in smaller numbers a dominant individual singles out and harasses tankmates, and aquarists who started with four or fewer have repeatedly ended up with a single survivor. As a pair forms, both partners pale dramatically, the chin, throat and lower body darken, the black interorbital line and flank bars become bold, and the blue in the face and fins intensifies. Courtship is a mutual head-down display in which each fish vibrates its body at the other — the same ritual seen across the deep-bodied Paretroplus — after which the pair selects and clears a hard surface, typically a rock, and excavates the adjacent sand while driving all other fish well back. The pair bond and the defence of the spawning site are shared by both sexes. In the wild, fishermen report that the species spawns in the sunken forest in October and November, at the start of the rains.
Breeding
Paretroplus menarambo is a biparental substrate spawner, not a mouthbrooder. The pair lays adhesive eggs — described by keepers as pale pink to ivory — on a cleaned hard surface such as a rock or submerged branch, and both parents guard and tend the clutch; a female has been photographed fanning her eggs while the male holds the territory. Brood sizes in this lineage run to a few hundred eggs, and the one wild observation on record is of a single pair shepherding roughly two hundred young, which gives a sense of clutch and survival under natural conditions. The species is notoriously difficult to breed to free-swimming fry in captivity, and the obstacle is behavioural: Paretroplus menarambo is extremely sensitive to disturbance and noise around spawning, and stressed parents readily eat their own eggs. Pioneering British keepers Sonia Guinane and Dave Tourle — working from the captive-breeding stock raised at Bolton Museum Aquarium in England in the late 1990s — found that artificially incubating the stripped eggs was the reliable route to rearing young, a technique still used by most who breed the fish; only a small number of aquarists have managed to raise fry left with the parents. Like most Malagasy cichlids it is a slow grower, taking close to two years to reach sexual maturity, so breeding projects are measured in years rather than months. Encouragingly, successful spawnings have occurred on both sides of the Atlantic, and it is this captive reproduction that has kept the species in existence.
In the aquarium
The pinstripe damba is a large, handsome, long-lived cichlid that has circulated in specialist circles for decades, and because of its conservation status most keepers approach it less as a pet than as a custodial breeding project. It needs space: 105 US gal is a sensible minimum for a group, and considerably larger is better — a six-foot tank (roughly 180 × 60 × 23.5 in) suits adults that may approach 10 in. The strong recommendation is to raise a group of six or more juveniles together and let pairs form naturally, both to manage the intraspecific aggression and to maximise the chance of producing fry; keeping too few almost guarantees losses.
Water should be warm, hard and alkaline, mirroring the Sofia lakes: pH at or above neutral (about 7.0–8.5), a temperature of at least 75–79 °F for maintenance and warmer still — 82 °F or more — to bring fish into breeding condition. A fine sand substrate is important, as these fish sift it for food; furnish the tank with bogwood, smooth river boulders and a large flat rock to serve as a spawning site. Madagascan cichlids are intolerant of accumulated dissolved waste, so over-filtration and generous, frequent partial water changes (30–50 % weekly) are non-negotiable for health and colour.
Feeding is easy — quality sinking dried foods, frozen invertebrates and live snails are all relished, and the fish will happily rid a tank of snails. Tankmates are best chosen from the same robust, hard-water world: sturdy catfishes and other Madagascan cichlids work well as company, while the chief incompatibility is conspecific, since rival adults can be dangerously aggressive in too small a group or tank. For serious breeding attempts a single-species set-up is preferable, both to reduce stress and to avoid any risk of hybridising with congeneric Paretroplus. Anyone fortunate enough to obtain this fish should treat it as a chance to add to a managed captive population rather than as an ordinary display cichlid.
Conservation
Paretroplus menarambo is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered (criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)), assessed on 26 June 2016 by T. Ravelomanana, with the population trend listed as unknown; it carries no CITES or CMS listing. The species was once distributed across the Bemarivo–Sofia floodplain lakes but disappeared from the type locality, Lac Sarodrano, and was not seen in the wild for years despite targeted searches — at one point it was widely feared extinct in nature, and some accounts treat it as effectively extinct in the wild. Its one confirmed surviving wild population is in Lac Tseny, where survey work in 2010–2012 (Madagasikara Voakajy and partners, supported by the Conservation Leadership Programme) confirmed its presence but found it rare in catches: across hundreds of fish sampled, native cichlids were vastly outnumbered by introduced species, with Mozambique tilapia, redbreast tilapia and others dominating the nets. The threats are the familiar Malagasy combination — habitat degradation from deforestation and siltation of the floodplain lakes, competition and predation from introduced fishes (tilapias, the snakehead Channa, Heterotis), and overfishing, in a region where more than 90 % of the lakeside population depends on fishing. Against this backdrop the species survives largely through ex-situ conservation breeding: coordinated programmes at the Toronto Zoo, the Zoological Society of London, the Paul V. Loiselle Conservation Fund and dedicated aquarists, together with on-the-ground work at Lac Tseny (including a 2017 reinforcement of the wild population from captive-bred stock), have kept it alive. Fittingly, the pinstripe damba is the emblem of the C.A.R.E.S. Preservation Program, which flags it among the priority species hobbyists are urged to maintain so that the line is not lost.
