Paretroplus dambabe is a large, deep-bodied damba cichlid endemic to the shallow floodplain lakes of northwestern Madagascar, where it is now effectively confined to Lake Kinkony, the island's second-largest lake. Described by John Sparks in 2002, it had spent decades misidentified as the older Paretroplus petiti before its grayish-blue body, variable wash of bright red on the flanks, and series of faint charcoal bars were recognized as diagnostic. Its Malagasy name translates as 'the big damba,' and it is one of the most threatened members of an already imperilled genus — a Gondwanan relict assessed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered and squeezed by invasive tilapia, common carp, siltation, and the conversion of its lake margins to rice paddy.

Taxonomy & naming

Paretroplus dambabe was described by the American ichthyologist John S. Sparks in 2002, in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington, from material collected at Lake Kinkony in the Mahavavy du Sud basin of northwestern Madagascar. Although specimens had been gathered as early as the 1960s, the fish was long lumped with Paretroplus petiti Pellegrin, 1929 — a name to which it had 'been mistakenly referred for decades' — and Sparks' paper is as much a disentangling of Paretroplus petiti as it is a new description. He separated dambabe from petiti on overall coloration (light yellowish-olive versus dark brown), the presence of bright red flank pigment in life, a bold vertical barring pattern, and a comparatively shallower body (48–57% of standard length versus about 58% in petiti). The genus Paretroplus Bleeker, 1868 is endemic to Madagascar and, together with the South Asian Etroplus and Pseudetroplus, makes up the subfamily Etroplinae — the lineage recovered in molecular studies as the sister group to all remaining cichlids, a living signature of the Mesozoic break-up of Gondwana. In Sparks' 2008 revision of the genus, dambabe falls within the 'deep-bodied clade' of primarily lacustrine species alongside P. maculatus, Paretroplus menarambo, and Paretroplus maromandia. The name is wholly Malagasy: damba is the vernacular term that Merina fish traders applied to several northwestern Paretroplus, and be means 'big' or 'large,' so dambabe is literally 'the big damba,' a noun in apposition referring to the species' large size relative to most of its congeners.

Morphology

This is a large, deep-bodied, strongly laterally compressed cichlid that reaches about 7.5 in in standard length, with a characteristically blunt, rounded head profile. Body depth runs roughly 48 to 57 percent of standard length — deep, but distinctly shallower than the closely confused Paretroplus petiti. Fin counts are typical of the deep-bodied dambas: about 16–18 dorsal spines and 17–19 soft rays, 8–10 anal spines and 13–15 anal soft rays. Coloration is the species' signature. In preservative the body is a pale yellow to golden olive crossed by six or seven faint, often barely discernible (especially in adults) dark-olive vertical bars, with uniformly gray to charcoal unpaired fins. In life the picture is far more striking: the base color is grayish to bluish-green, overlaid by a highly variable amount of bright red pigment on the flanks, concentrated below the upper branch of the lateral line — the trait that earns it the FishBase label 'red-bellied Madagascar cichlid.' This combination is unique among congeners. Sexual dimorphism is poorly documented and subtle, as in most Paretroplus; the sexes are not reliably told apart on external features, though as with related dambas males tend to grow somewhat larger and ripe females become noticeably deeper-bodied when in condition.

Habitat

Paretroplus dambabe is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish endemic to the lowland floodplain waters of northwestern Madagascar — historically the lower Mahavavy du Sud, Betsiboka, and Mahajamba basins and associated lakes, but today essentially restricted to Lake Kinkony, with the wider Mahavavy-Kinkony wetland complex its last stronghold. Kinkony is Madagascar's second-largest lake, roughly 14,000 hectares, and the habitat is unforgiving: extremely shallow, highly turbid, and oligotrophic, the type of floodplain lake characteristic of these northwestern basins. Unlike the soft, acid blackwaters of the Amazon, these are warm, hard, alkaline waters. Field measurements across Kinkony by Ramanantsalama and colleagues recorded water temperatures of about 77–81 °F, a markedly basic pH around 8.7–8.9, conductivity of roughly 260–350 µS/cm, and turbidity of 26–54 NTU — the lake is, in their words, 'moderately saline throughout,' and the species tolerates brackish conditions up to a lethal limit near 10 parts per thousand salinity. Within this murky lake the fish is strongly tied to fringing reed (Phragmites) beds, which it uses both for foraging and as spawning cover; abundance falls away as that marginal vegetation is lost. The FEOW freshwater ecoregion is Northwestern Madagascar, a region whose lakes run higher in pH, conductivity, and dissolved carbonates than the acidic eastern drainages.

Feeding

Direct gut-content data for Paretroplus dambabe are scarce, but its trophic position can be reconstructed from its anatomy, its lake, and its relatives. FishBase estimates a low trophic level near 2.8, consistent with a benthic omnivore rather than a predator. Paretroplus as a genus is diagnosed in part by heavy, molariform pharyngeal dentition and robust jaws adapted to crushing — many congeners are durophagous, taking snails and other hard-shelled invertebrates — and the deep-bodied lacustrine dambas generally forage over the bottom and among submerged vegetation for invertebrates, detritus, and plant material. In turbid Kinkony, Paretroplus dambabe is closely associated with the reed beds, which the ecological literature notes provide nutrients and microorganisms for fishes that 'feed on microorganisms and suspended matter,' so a diet spanning benthic invertebrates, organic detritus, and associated plankton in the vegetated margins is the most defensible reading. It is not a piscivore, and it occupies a generalist invertebrate-and-detritus niche in the lake community.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour has not been documented in detail for Paretroplus dambabe specifically, but the genus is consistent enough that the broad pattern is clear. All Paretroplus are monogamous, biparental substrate spawners that form lasting pair bonds, and breeding in Madagascar is seasonal — typically running from about August through October, the latter half of the dry season, when floodplain waters are at their lowest and warmest. Pair formation involves the two fish establishing and jointly defending a territory; in the deep-bodied lake species, spawning is preceded by the cleaning of a hard surface or the preparation of a site, and in Kinkony the fringing reed vegetation serves as the focal spawning habitat. As with related dambas, mature dambas can be pugnacious toward conspecifics during the pairing period, and a settled, well-matched pair holds its ground against intruders. Beyond this genus-typical framework, the specific courtship displays of Paretroplus dambabe remain unrecorded in the literature.

Breeding

No detailed account of spawning in wild or captive Paretroplus dambabe has been published, and what can be said is drawn from the genus and from field observation at Kinkony. Like its congeners, it is a biparental substrate spawner: the pair deposits a layer of adhesive eggs on a cleaned firm surface or among vegetation, and both parents share guarding and fanning of the eggs and then the free-swimming fry, in the manner of New-World substrate-brooding cichlids rather than the mouthbrooding of the African rift lakes. At Lake Kinkony the species is reported to use the reed beds at the Makary site to lay its eggs, which ties its reproduction directly to the marginal vegetation now being lost to erosion and rice cultivation. Clutch sizes have not been counted for this species; congeneric deep-bodied dambas are productive spawners producing clutches on the order of several hundred to a couple of thousand eggs, a figure that should be treated as genus-typical and approximate. Malagasy cichlids are notoriously slow-growing and late-maturing — related dambas take roughly two years to reach sexual maturity — which compounds the conservation problem, since populations recover slowly once depleted.

In the aquarium

Paretroplus dambabe is essentially an institutional and specialist conservation fish rather than a general-hobby cichlid; it is rare in private collections, and most aquarium experience with the deep-bodied dambas comes from its better-known relatives such as Paretroplus menarambo (the pinstripe damba) and P. maculatus. The husbandry that follows is therefore extrapolated from those congeners and from the species' own habitat, and should be read as such.

This is a large, deep-bodied fish that grows slowly to nearly 7.5 in and will not stay small. A single pair needs a big, long tank — on the order of 71 in of length and several hundred litres — with even more room if kept as a group to allow subdominant fish to escape. The single most important point, and the one that separates Malagasy dambas from most South-American cichlids in the hobby, is water chemistry: these are hard, alkaline, warm-water fish. Aim for a pH on the basic side (roughly 7.5–8.5), moderately hard water, and temperatures around 77–82 °F, mirroring Lake Kinkony rather than the soft acidic conditions suited to Amazonian cichlids. The species also tolerates a little salt, in keeping with the moderately saline, occasionally brackish nature of its home lake.

Provide a substrate of fine sand, open swimming space, and structure — driftwood, rocks, or sturdy artificial plants — that breaks sightlines and offers flat surfaces for a pair to spawn on. Filtration should be generous and water changes frequent: in their turbid floodplain lakes these fish carry a high organic load, and biotope keepers of Kinkony aquaria report substantial regular water changes to keep nitrogenous waste in check. Dambas are robust feeders that take prepared sinking foods, frozen invertebrates, and vegetable matter; given the durophagous bent of the genus, occasional shelled foods (snails, krill) suit them well.

Temperament is the usual cichlid caveat: peaceful enough in a large tank outside breeding, but pairs become territorial and intolerant of conspecifics when spawning, so tankmates should be robust, similarly sized, and given space. Because the species is Critically Endangered and maintained largely through coordinated conservation programs (it features in CARES-type ex-situ efforts for threatened Malagasy fishes), anyone fortunate enough to keep it should treat it as a stewardship responsibility — keep a group, work toward a breeding population, and connect with the specialist network rather than treating it as an ordinary community fish.

Conservation

Paretroplus dambabe is assessed on the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered (criteria B1ab(iii,v); assessed 24 June 2016 by Ravelomanana and Sparks, published 2016), with a decreasing population trend. The assessment reflects a tiny, shrinking range — the species now persists essentially only in Lake Kinkony and the surrounding Mahavavy-Kinkony wetland complex — combined with intense and multiplying pressures on that single lake. The Kinkony basin is heavily disturbed: much of it has been converted to rice cultivation and livestock grazing, little original riparian vegetation remains, and erosion drives siltation and the loss of the reed beds the fish depends on for feeding and spawning. Fishing pressure is seasonally very high, and Sparks reported, on the testimony of local fishermen, a severe decline in the species' abundance. Layered on top are introduced fishes: Lake Kinkony is now dominated by non-native tilapias (Oreochromis niloticus, Oreochromis mossambicus, Oreochromis macrochir, Tilapia rendalli, Tilapia zillii) and holds common carp, and ecological work by Ramanantsalama and colleagues found the abundance of Paretroplus dambabe significantly and negatively associated with several of these invaders, which compete for resources, disturb macrophytes, and breed far faster than the slow-maturing damba. The Mahavavy-Kinkony complex is a recognized protected/Ramsar wetland and the focus of monitoring efforts, but the species' restriction to one degraded lake, its slow life history, and the entrenchment of invasive competitors make it one of the most precarious of an already gravely threatened genus. (Note: some hobby databases list a 2020 'Vulnerable' status for this species; that appears to be a cross-listing error — both FishBase and the live IUCN Red List record it as Critically Endangered.)
