Taxonomy & naming
Pundamilia igneopinnis was described in 1998 by Ole Seehausen and Elisabeth Lippitsch, whose detailed lepidological (scale-pattern) studies contributed to distinguishing the several new Pundamilia species recognised during the systematic revision of Lake Victoria's rock-cichlid fauna in the 1990s. The genus name Pundamilia is taken directly from the Swahili word for “zebra,” referring to the bold black vertical barring over a paler ground colour carried by females and non-breeding males across the genus — most famously in the well-known aquarium species Pundamilia nyererei. The species epithet igneopinnis combines the Latin igneus, “fiery,” with pinna, “fin,” describing the intensely coloured, fire-toned fins of breeding males.
Morphology
Pundamilia igneopinnis shares the compact, deep-bodied form typical of Lake Victoria's rock-dwelling haplochromines. As in other Pundamilia, females and non-breeding males show the genus's characteristic zebra-like black barring over a pale ground colour, while breeding males develop the fiery fin colouration named in the species epithet, layered over a body colour that has not been documented in further detail here.
Habitat
The species inhabits Lake Victoria's rocky littoral zone — boulder fields and rock outcrops around islands and shoreline headlands — sharing this habitat with a dense, multi-species assemblage of related rock-dwelling haplochromines in shallow, sunlit water.
Feeding
Pundamilia species are generally algae grazers and general invertebrate feeders associated with rocky littoral habitat, and Pundamilia igneopinnis is presumed to follow this pattern, though no species-specific dietary study has been confirmed here.
Mating
The fiery fin colouration of breeding males is presumably central to female mate choice, consistent with the broader pattern in Lake Victoria's rock-cichlid community of male territoriality and colour-based female choice. This mate-choice system is the same one whose disruption by eutrophication has been directly implicated in the collapse and hybridisation of several closely related Pundamilia species pairs (Seehausen, van Alphen & Witte, 1997), though detailed courtship behaviour has not been documented specifically for this species.
Breeding
Pundamilia igneopinnis is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as is universal among Lake Victoria haplochromines, with the female incubating fertilised eggs and fry in her mouth before releasing free-swimming young. Clutch size and incubation details specific to this species are not documented here.
In the aquarium
This species has limited but real presence among specialist keepers of Lake Victoria cichlids, maintained mainly through conservation-oriented networks connected to the CARES Preservation Program rather than the general aquarium trade — a smaller-scale echo of the popularity enjoyed by its well-known genus-mate Pundamilia nyererei. Expected husbandry follows the genus: hard alkaline water, a rockwork aquascape, and a varied omnivorous diet.
Conservation
The CARES Preservation Program lists Pundamilia igneopinnis as CARES Endangered (CEN) in its March 2026 Cichlidae priority list, one of its more urgent categories. No IUCN Red List assessment for this species could be confirmed here. Pundamilia is the genus at the centre of one of the best-documented case studies in cichlid conservation biology: eutrophication-driven turbidity in parts of Lake Victoria has been shown to blur the colour contrasts (typically red versus blue nuptial colouration) that females use to distinguish between closely related Pundamilia species, causing sibling species to hybridise and effectively collapse into each other where water clarity has deteriorated most (Seehausen, van Alphen & Witte, 1997). An Endangered CARES rating for a species in this genus should be read against that specific, well-established threat mechanism, on top of the broader historical damage done to the lake's cichlid flock by introduced Nile perch.
