Taxonomy & naming
Pundamilia pundamilia was described in 1998 by Ole Seehausen and Niels Bouton as the type species of the newly erected genus Pundamilia, part of their systematic revision of Lake Victoria's rocky-shore haplochromine community. Its tautonymous name — the species epithet repeating the genus name — is a naming convention used when a species is designated as the type of its genus and no more specific descriptive epithet is applied. The genus name Pundamilia is taken directly from the Swahili word for “zebra,” referring to the bold black vertical barring over a paler ground colour carried by females and non-breeding males across the genus, most famously in the well-known aquarium species Pundamilia nyererei, a close relative.
Morphology
As the genus's type species, Pundamilia pundamilia displays the defining zebra-like pattern in its most representative form: bold black vertical bars over a pale ground colour in females and non-breeding males, with breeding males developing brighter nuptial colouration typical of the genus. It shares the compact, deep-bodied build common to Lake Victoria's rock-dwelling haplochromines.
Habitat
The species inhabits Lake Victoria's rocky littoral zone — boulder fields and rock outcrops around islands and shoreline headlands — sharing this habitat with a dense, multi-species assemblage of related rock-dwelling haplochromines in shallow, sunlit water.
Feeding
Pundamilia species are generally algae grazers and general invertebrate feeders associated with rocky littoral habitat, and Pundamilia pundamilia is presumed to follow this pattern, though no species-specific dietary study has been confirmed here.
Mating
Pundamilia pundamilia and its close relatives form part of one of the best-studied systems in speciation biology: sibling species pairs distinguished chiefly by male nuptial colour, with females choosing mates on the basis of that colour. Where water clarity has declined through eutrophication, this colour-based discrimination breaks down and previously distinct sibling species hybridise (Seehausen, van Alphen & Witte, 1997) — a mechanism documented across the genus, though the specific courtship details of this species have not been separately described here.
Breeding
Pundamilia pundamilia is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as is universal among Lake Victoria haplochromines, with the female incubating fertilised eggs and fry in her mouth before releasing free-swimming young. This species has a modest presence among specialist keepers of Lake Victoria cichlids, generally smaller than that of its well-known relative Pundamilia nyererei, maintained mainly through conservation-oriented networks connected to the CARES Preservation Program. Expected husbandry follows the genus: hard alkaline water, a rockwork aquascape, and a varied omnivorous diet.

The CARES Preservation Program lists Pundamilia pundamilia as CARES Vulnerable (CVU), in a listing dated January 2017. No IUCN Red List assessment for this species could be confirmed here. As the type species of a genus that has become a textbook case study in speciation research, Pundamilia pundamilia sits at the centre of well-documented evidence that eutrophication-driven turbidity in parts of Lake Victoria degrades the colour-based mate choice separating sibling Pundamilia species, driving hybridisation and effective loss of distinct species where water clarity has deteriorated most (Seehausen, van Alphen & Witte, 1997). That threat, layered on top of the historical damage done to the lake's cichlid flock by introduced Nile perch, is the most likely basis for its conservation-priority status among aquarists, even in the absence of a formal Red List entry.
