Taxonomy & naming
Satanoperca lilith was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander and the Brazilian fish ecologist Efrem J. G. Ferreira in 1988, in the journal Cybium (volume 12, number 4, pages 343–355), under the title 'A new Satanoperca species (Teleostei, Cichlidae) from the Amazon River basin in Brazil.' The type locality is Urumari, in the Rio Negro drainage of Amazonas State, Brazil (about 0°03′S, 63°30′W), and the species was described from a long series of localities scattered across the central Amazon. The fish was no stranger to science when it was named: it had been confused for over a century with Satanoperca daemon (Heckel, 1840). Kullander and Ferreira realised, in re-examining material that earlier workers (including Gosse, 1976) had filed under daemon, that two distinct fish had been conflated — the Colombian/Venezuelan form sold in the trade as 'daemon,' which carries two black blotches along the flank, and the central-Amazonian form, which has only one. They retained the two-spotted fish as Satanoperca daemon and erected Satanoperca lilith for the one-spotted Brazilian species. The name continues the genus's deliberately diabolical tradition: Satanoperca is 'Satan's perch,' a play first inspired by Heckel having named a fish 'Geophagus daemon,' and lilith honours Lilith, a nocturnal female demon of Babylonian and Jewish folklore — a 'demon' name chosen, the authors explain, to flag the close kinship of this fish with the 'demon fish' Satanoperca daemon. Within the genus the species belongs to the Satanoperca daemon species group, one of three morphological assemblages (alongside the Satanoperca jurupari group and the monotypic Satanoperca acuticeps group) recognised in this eartheater lineage of the subfamily Geophaginae.
Morphology
Satanoperca lilith is among the larger members of its genus, reaching about 10 in in standard length (FishBase), the length figure also cited in the original description; the Satanoperca daemon group as a whole runs bigger than the jurupari-group eartheaters. Weidner reports wild specimens reaching as much as 14 in, calling Satanoperca lilith the largest species in its genus, though aquarium fish typically stall out around 8–10 in — a pattern of wild fish outgrowing their captive counterparts that recurs across the daemon group. The body is the typical deep, laterally compressed geophagine form with a long sloping snout and the protrusible, downturned mouth of a substrate-sifter. The defining marks are two: a single roughly circular dark blotch set midway along each flank, on or just above the lateral line, and a conspicuous black ocellus (a dark spot ringed in pale colour) at the upper base of the caudal fin — usually roundish, though in some populations it is more elongate and sits entirely on the fin itself rather than straddling the peduncle — that caudal ocellus separates Satanoperca from every other putative geophagine, while the single body blotch separates lilith from the two-blotched Satanoperca daemon and the three-spotted Satanoperca acuticeps. The base colour is a silvery to brassy tan, often washed with iridescent blue-green, with rows of pearly spots over the head, flanks and unpaired fins and the fine sparkling cheek speckling that gives the daemon-group fish the trade name 'speckled-face' or 'demonfish.' Diagnostically, the daemon group carries a high dorsal-fin ray count (about XIX.13), 29–31 scales in the E1 longitudinal row, and 18–22 gill rakers on the first arch. Sexual dimorphism is slight: adult males tend to grow somewhat larger, while ripe females are a little deeper-bodied; there is no reliable external colour difference.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Brazil, where it ranges widely through the central Amazon. It follows the Solimões–Amazon main channel from the Rio Japurá in the west, upstream of Manaus, down to the lower Rio Tapajós at Santarém, and it ascends the lower courses of many tributaries — most characteristically the Rio Negro (recorded as far up as the Rio Curucuriari near São Gabriel da Cachoeira), and also the Branco, Madeira (with its Canumã and Aripuanã systems), Uatumã, Japurá, Aripuanã and Trombetas drainages. In the Rio Negro it is the resident 'demon'; to the north it gives way to Satanoperca daemon, which crosses the Casiquiare into the Orinoco system of Venezuela and Colombia (which is why most aquarium 'daemon' imports originate there, not in Brazil). Satanoperca lilith is a fish of black and clearwater habitats — main river channels, smaller tributaries, oxbows and floodplain lakes — over bottoms of sand or mud strewn with leaf litter and submerged branches, although it does not avoid whitewater either. It is typically found close to shore, near submerged vegetation it can retreat into when threatened, and it also enters the small forest streams (igarapés) of the lower Tapajós. These are the warm, soft, acidic, mineral-poor waters typical of the Negro and similar blackwater systems; field measurements from the lower Tapajós put the pH at a fairly narrow 5.5–6.5 and conductivity only rarely above about 50 µS/cm, among the softest water conditions recorded for any geophagine, and the species is consistently reported to need genuinely soft, low-pH conditions and does poorly in hard or alkaline water. FishBase classifies it as a benthopelagic freshwater fish of the tropics; a precise published depth band for the species is not available, but it is a fish of the shallow littoral and channel-margin zone rather than deep open water.
Feeding
Like all Satanoperca, Satanoperca lilith is an 'eartheater' (a benthophagous sand-sifter): it takes mouthfuls of sand or soft sediment, sorts out edible particles in the buccal cavity and pharyngeal apparatus, and expels the cleaned substrate through the gill openings and mouth. Kullander and Ferreira's own gut analyses of Rio Negro fish give an unusually detailed picture of the diet and how it shifts with the flood pulse. At high water, insects (about 46% — mostly aquatic fly and beetle larvae) and crustaceans (about 30%) dominated the stomachs; at low water, plant matter such as leaves (about 28%) and insects (about 22%) led. Tellingly, 81% of the 37 specimens they examined contained sand grains (about 16% of gut volume on average at low water), confirming the sand-sifting feeding mode — and standing in sharp contrast to the same study's Satanoperca jurupari from the Negro, which were heavily piscivorous (fish in roughly 85% of guts, including young cichlids) and rarely held sand. So while jurupari-group eartheaters can be effective predators of small fish, Satanoperca lilith functions in its community as a benthic invertivore and detritus-and-plant feeder that processes large volumes of sediment. Aquarium accounts agree: wild stomachs hold small aquatic invertebrates (cladocerans, ostracods, chironomid larvae), seeds and organic detritus, and the fish seems unable to handle large food items even when full-grown.
Mating
The reproductive biology of Satanoperca lilith has not been observed directly, in the wild or in captivity, so its mating behaviour must be read from its close relatives and from the genus's broad division into substrate-spawners and mouthbrooders. The three Satanoperca species groups differ in reproductive strategy: the Satanoperca jurupari group are delayed (larvophilous) biparental mouthbrooders, while the Satanoperca daemon group — to which lilith belongs — and the monotypic Satanoperca acuticeps are substrate spawners. On that basis Seriously Fish and other reviewers treat Satanoperca lilith as a presumed biparental substrate spawner, like its sister species Satanoperca daemon, which has been bred in Germany. (Kullander and Ferreira themselves, working before daemon-group spawnings were well documented, tentatively suggested lilith might prove a delayed biparental mouthbrooder like the rest of the genus — a guess later observations of daemon-group breeding have not borne out.) In any case the fish is reported to pair off and become markedly more aggressive when breeding; outside of the breeding period it is, for an eartheater of its size, comparatively peaceful and inclined to live in loose groups.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for Satanoperca lilith — neither a wild nest nor a confirmed captive spawning is on record, and the species remained, at last report, never reliably propagated in aquaria; Weidner, writing as the genus's leading authority, states plainly that nothing is known of its breeding behaviour and only assumes it will not differ markedly from that of its fellow territory-holding, pit-digging pair spawners Satanoperca daemon and Satanoperca acuticeps — a caution worth taking seriously, since he also flags that the species could just as easily turn out to breed quite differently once observed. The best-supported expectation, from the behaviour of its species group, is that it is a biparental substrate spawner: a pair would clean a firm surface, lay an adhesive clutch, and jointly guard eggs and then free-swimming fry, rather than carrying the brood in the mouth as the jurupari-group eartheaters do. Clutch size, egg and larval development and the duration of parental care are all unrecorded for this species; the closest reference points are its substrate-spawning relatives in the daemon group. One concrete suggestion from the literature for anyone attempting it: because the preferred spawning substrate is unknown, offering a bed of leaf litter is worth trying in case the species turns out to prefer a movable, transportable surface rather than bare sand or rock, as some other geophagines do. The barrier to captive breeding is partly the fish's temperament — wild-caught adults are notoriously aggressive and hard to settle into compatible pairs — and partly its exacting demand for very soft, acidic, scrupulously clean water, the conditions that in the wild trigger and sustain spawning in Rio Negro blackwater. Until a documented spawning appears, any account of its breeding remains inference from the genus rather than observation of the species.
In the aquarium
Satanoperca lilith is an advanced keeper's fish, scarce in the trade and unforgiving of mistakes. It is sometimes offered as the 'one-spotted demon fish' or 'one-spot eartheater,' often as an incidental in shipments of other Amazonian eartheaters. Given an adult length around 10 in and the species' need for room, an aquarium with a base footprint of at least roughly 210 × 23.5 in (on the order of 200 US gal) is the realistic minimum for a group.
The single most important rule is water quality and stability. These cichlids are extremely sensitive to deteriorating conditions and to swings in chemistry, and must never be introduced to a biologically immature tank; inadequate maintenance shows up as head-and-lateral-line erosion and stunted growth. Satanoperca lilith does appear somewhat less prone than other 'spotted' Satanoperca (notably Satanoperca acuticeps) to the skin lesions that plague the genus under poor conditions, but that relative resilience is no excuse to relax standards — optimal, stable water remains the baseline requirement. Heavy biological filtration — canister filters and/or a sump — combined with large, frequent water changes (50–70% weekly is the standard advice) keeps them healthy. Crucially, and unlike the more adaptable jurupari-group eartheaters, the daemon-group fish genuinely require soft, acidic water and in most cases will not thrive in untreated hard tap water: aim for a low pH and very soft, mineral-poor water that mirrors the Rio Negro. A workable maintenance envelope is temperature about 79–86 °F (warm), pH on the order of 5.0–7.0 trending acidic, and low hardness; reported tolerances run pH 5.0–7.5 and a wide hardness band, but the safe target for this species is at the soft, acidic end. High flow should be avoided — these are fish of calm channel margins — so position filter returns to circulate gently.
The substrate is non-negotiable: a deep bed of soft sand so the fish can sift naturally. Gravel or pebbles inhibit feeding, can abrade or damage the gill filaments, and may be swallowed; coarse substrate is unkind to a compulsive sand-sifter. Décor is a matter of taste but the favoured look is dim lighting with driftwood and scattered roots and branches. Natural leaf litter suits the biotope but in practice the constant sifting suspends partly-decomposed material that clogs filters, so it is often left out. Tailor mechanical filtration to trap the fine particles the fish stir up, since circulating sand wears pump mechanisms.
Feeding is straightforward provided the food is small: even large adults struggle with big items, so offer a variety of fine-grade prepared foods plus small live or frozen bloodworm, Artemia, Tubifex and mosquito larvae, with some vegetable content (Spirulina). Because it needs large quantities of food to grow well, several small portions spread across the whole day suit the browsing habit far better than one or two large meals — and a mixed-species tank makes this harder to manage, since faster or bolder tankmates will simply out-compete Satanoperca lilith for the food on offer. One quirk worth planning around: when fed frozen Artemia, Mysis or fine krill, the species is prone to taking a mouthful and then ejecting much of it uneaten back out through the gills, so in a tank with greedy competitors it can end up going hungry even when plenty of food has gone in.
Temperament is the catch. Outside of breeding the species is surprisingly peaceful and will not harass anything it cannot swallow, so suitable companions are numerous — peaceful South Americans that share the same soft, warm, acidic water. Avoid aggressive or territorial bottom-dwellers and anything needing harder, more alkaline conditions. Some keepers house Satanoperca with Potamotrygon stingrays, which often works but has sometimes ended with the cichlids vanishing at night. The real difficulty is the fish itself: wild-caught daemon-group eartheaters can be extremely aggressive toward one another, and getting a settled, compatible group or pair is the chief obstacle to keeping — and the reason captive breeding has remained out of reach.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Satanoperca lilith as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio; published 2022), with a population trend reported as stable. The species' wide distribution across the central Amazon and its many tributaries underpins the low-concern rating; it carries no CITES listing. As a widespread habitat generalist within the basin it is far less exposed than the Amazon's many narrow-range endemics. The broader backdrop, however, is the accelerating pressure on Amazonian freshwaters — dam construction, deforestation, gold-mining and its mercury contamination, overfishing and altered flood-pulse regimes — and on blackwater systems such as the Rio Negro in particular, whose soft, acidic, nutrient-poor character is exactly what this species depends on. None of these is documented as a present threat to Satanoperca lilith specifically, but they frame how its long-term status should be read.
