Taxonomy & naming
Crenicichla macrophthalma was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840, in his monograph on the new river fishes that the naturalist-explorer Johann Natterer had collected in Brazil ('Johann Natterer's neue Flussfische Brasilien's', Annalen des Wiener Museums der Naturgeschichte). Natterer's material came from the central Amazon, and the type locality is the lower Rio Negro near Barra do Rio Negro — the old name for present-day Manaus. This is the species for which Heckel built the genus Crenicichla itself, making macrophthalma the type species: by the rules of zoological nomenclature the name Crenicichla is fixed to this fish and can never be applied to a group that excludes it. In the same 1840 work Heckel also erected the pike-like genus Batrachops, later sunk into Crenicichla. For nearly two centuries Crenicichla swelled into one of the largest of all cichlid genera, with around 90 species. The major revision by Henrique Varella, Sven Kullander, Naércio Menezes, Claudio Oliveira and Hernán López-Fernández (2023), using a combined molecular and morphological phylogeny, broke the genus apart: the more distantly related lineages were moved into the new or revived genera Lugubria, Saxatilia, Wallaciia and Hemeraia (with Teleocichla confirmed as separate), while Crenicichla in the strict sense was restricted to macrophthalma and two subgenera, Crenicichla (Batrachops) and Crenicichla (Lacustria). Because macrophthalma is the type, it stays in Crenicichla under every arrangement and falls in the nominotypical subgenus Crenicichla (Crenicichla). Molecular work (a mitochondrial-DNA phylogeny by Burress and colleagues, 2021) treats it as the sole representative of a distinctive 'macrophthalma species group', recovered apart from the lugubris, lenticulata and saxatilis lineages with which hobbyists have long muddled it.
Morphology
This is a medium-sized pike cichlid: FishBase and the Varella revision give a maximum of about 8 in (8 in) standard length, modest by the standards of giants such as lugubris or lenticulata, which is why it is sometimes loosely called a 'dwarf' pike although it is really a mid-sized one. The body is the elongate, cylindrical, torpedo shape shared across the genus, with a long-based dorsal fin, a pointed pike-like head and the serrated (crenulated) rear edge of the preopercle that gave the genus its name. Two features set macrophthalma apart and are the key to telling it from look-alikes. The first is the eye: the epithet means 'large-eyed', and Heckel described the eye as roughly a quarter of the head length — proportionally larger than in its relatives. The second is an unusually conspicuous, exaggerated lateral-line system, the rows of sensory pores running along the flank standing out strongly against the body. A large eye and a heavily developed lateral line together point to a fish that hunts in dim conditions — at night, in turbid water, or in the tea-dark blackwater of the Rio Negro where vision is limited and pressure-sensing matters. Coloration in the few documented specimens is an understated brown to greyish ground, without the bold ocellated spotting or heavy reticulation of the lenticulata and lugubris groups. Sexual dimorphism is not well documented for this rarely kept species, but it almost certainly follows the genus pattern, in which ripe females develop a contrasting (often reddish or whitish) belly patch and rounder profile while males grow somewhat larger with more produced unpaired fins.
Habitat
Crenicichla macrophthalma is a fish of the central and lower Amazon basin in Brazil. The type material came from the lower Rio Negro at Manaus, and FishBase records the species from the Negro, Uatumã, Tapajós, Xingu and Trombetas river basins — all clearwater or blackwater tributaries of the central Amazon north and south of the main stem. GBIF occurrence records are confined to Brazil, and there is no reliable evidence it ranges into the Orinoco or the Guianas; older citations to Venezuela are regarded by regional authors as misidentifications or errors. Its core waters are soft and warm. The Rio Negro is the archetypal Amazonian blackwater: stained dark by dissolved humic acids, extraordinarily poor in dissolved minerals (conductivity as low as 8 µS/cm, per the Freshwater Ecoregions of the World account) and strongly acidic, with pH measured from below 3 up to about 5 in the river itself and around 4.5–5.0 in typical near-Manaus blackwater biotopes at roughly 81–82 °F. The clearwater tributaries it also inhabits (Tapajós, Xingu, Trombetas) run warm, soft and gently acidic to near-neutral but with better visibility. As a benthopelagic pike it lives close to structure — submerged wood, leaf litter, root tangles and rocky margins — where it can lie in ambush. There is no published depth band specific to this species; like other pike cichlids of these tributaries it is a shallow-water inhabitant of the littoral and marginal zone, generally within the first couple of metres of the bank rather than open deep water.
Feeding
Like all pike cichlids, Crenicichla macrophthalma is a predator built for ambush. The elongate body, pointed head and large mouth are the standard pike-cichlid toolkit for lunging at prey from cover, and FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3 — squarely carnivorous. The wild diet has not been studied directly for this species, but pike cichlids of its size feed mainly on small fish and large invertebrates: shrimp, aquatic insects and their larvae, and any fish small enough to be engulfed. The combination of a large eye and a heavily developed lateral line suggests it is adapted to detect prey in low light and in the visually difficult blackwater of the Rio Negro, hunting partly by motion-sensing as much as by sight. In its community it functions as a mid-level ambush piscivore of the structured littoral zone, taking up station among wood and roots and striking at prey that strays within range.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been documented in the wild or, so far as the literature records, in captivity for this seldom-kept species, so any account must be drawn from the well-established pattern of the genus. Pike cichlids are biparental and form pairs that defend a territory around a chosen spawning site. Pair formation typically follows a period of mutual assessment, with colour signalling — the female's brightening belly patch is the usual readiness cue — and ritualized displays that let two large, well-armed predators commit to one another without serious injury. Once bonded, the pair holds and defends a territory centred on a cave or sheltered crevice. As with most Crenicichla, compatibility cannot be assumed: an unready or mismatched pairing can turn lethal, and in the genus the larger fish (often the male) may kill a partner that is not prepared to spawn. The large eye and emphasised lateral line of macrophthalma hint that, in the wild, much of this courtship may play out in dim or stained water where chemical and tactile cues matter as much as visual ones.
Breeding
No spawning of Crenicichla macrophthalma appears to have been documented, in the wild or the aquarium — it is too rarely available for a captive-breeding record to have accumulated. Its reproduction is therefore inferred from its close relatives. Crenicichla are biparental cave or substrate spawners: the female attaches a clutch of adhesive eggs to the roof or wall of a cave, crevice, hollow log or similar sheltered surface, and both parents share the brood. The female tends and fans the eggs while the male guards the surrounding territory; after hatching, the wrigglers are moved to pits and the free-swimming fry are escorted as a guarded school, with the parents shepherding them back to cover at any disturbance. Clutch sizes in medium-sized congeners of comparable build typically run on the order of a hundred to several hundred eggs — a useful genus-typical estimate of roughly 100–300 eggs in the absence of species data. Spawning in Amazonian pikes is generally tied to the flood-pulse cycle, the rising and warming soft waters of the wet season cueing reproduction. Until this fish is bred and the event written up, every specific figure for macrophthalma should be read as an extrapolation from the genus rather than an observed fact.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla macrophthalma is, in practical terms, a collector's fish rather than a hobby staple. It is an extreme rarity in the trade — German and other importers have handled it only sporadically — and it is most often encountered as a misidentification, with lenticulata- or lugubris-type pikes sold under its name and, conversely, true macrophthalma occasionally turning up mislabelled as something else (the photograph long used for it on FishBase is itself disputed by experienced pike keepers). Anyone seriously seeking the real thing should look for the diagnostic combination of a notably large eye and an exaggerated lateral line on a relatively plain brown body, ideally with collection data from the Manaus region or the central-Amazon tributaries.
There is no published, species-specific husbandry record, so keeping recommendations follow sound practice for a ~8 in central-Amazon pike. A single fish or a confirmed pair needs a long tank — on the order of 47 in / roughly 65–80 US gal or more — furnished for an ambush predator: a fine sandy bottom, plenty of bogwood and root structure, leaf litter, and several caves or lengths of pipe to provide broken sightlines and secure retreats. Subdued lighting suits a large-eyed blackwater fish and will show its behaviour at its most natural.
Water should be soft, warm and on the acidic side, mirroring its home waters: roughly 79–86 °F and a pH around 5.0–6.8, with low to moderate hardness; tannin-stained blackwater conditions are ideal. As with all pike cichlids it is intolerant of accumulated nitrogenous waste, so generous filtration and regular water changes matter. Feeding is straightforward in principle — it is a piscivore that will take live and frozen meaty foods such as shrimp, earthworms, mussel and suitably sized fish, and many pikes can be weaned onto sinking carnivore pellets — but its predatory nature dictates tankmates. Do not house it with anything small enough to be eaten; choose robust, open-water mid-to-upper dwellers too large to swallow and not so aggressive as to harass a lurking predator. The greatest risk is intraspecific: two adults, or a poorly matched pair, can fight to the death, so this is not a fish to keep casually in multiples. In short, a rewarding but advanced subject — for the keeper who can actually source a correctly identified specimen.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla macrophthalma as Least Concern, in an assessment carried out on 7 November 2018 by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022. The species is not listed under CITES. As a fish distributed across several large central-Amazon drainages — the Negro, Uatumã, Tapajós, Xingu and Trombetas basins — it has a wide range and faces no documented species-level threat, and its rarity in the aquarium trade means collection pressure is negligible. That said, the rivers it inhabits are not free of stress: the central Amazon faces hydroelectric dam construction (the Xingu and Tapajós have been heavily affected by large dams), deforestation, gold mining with its attendant mercury contamination, and shifting flood-pulse regimes. None of these is recorded as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but they form the broader backdrop against which the long-term security of central-Amazon fishes should be judged.
