Taxonomy & naming
Saxatilia santosi was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Alex Ploeg in 1991, as one of fifteen new species in his University of Amsterdam doctoral revision of the genus Crenicichla — the work that remains the taxonomic backbone for the whole pike-cichlid radiation. The type series was collected in the Rio Urupá, a tributary of the Rio Ji-Paraná (also written Jiparaná, and historically called the Rio Machado), within the Rio Madeira system of Rondônia, Brazil; the holotype (INPA 2889) and a long series of paratypes are held at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia in Manaus and the former Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam. Ploeg placed santosi in the Crenicichla saxatilis group, the large assemblage of small-to-medium spangled pikes united by a ring-bordered humeral blotch, and it has stayed there ever since. In 2023 a phylogenomic revision of the pike cichlids by Varella and colleagues split the old, unwieldy Crenicichla into several genera and transferred the entire saxatilis group — santosi included — to the resurrected genus Saxatilia, so that the strictly current binomial in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is now Saxatilia santosi (Ploeg, 1991). That generic reshuffle is recent and not yet universally adopted in the hobby or the older literature, where the fish is still almost always called Saxatilia santosi; we retain the familiar Crenicichla heading here while flagging the Saxatilia placement. The species has no established English common name and is rarely seen in the trade.
Morphology
Saxatilia santosi is a small pike cichlid, reaching about 4.5 in in standard length — a fraction of the size of the genus's true heavyweights. The body is the elongate, cylindrical, slightly compressed shape that defines a pike cichlid: a long, low profile built for lying still among rocks and roots, a pointed head, and a large, terminal, deeply cleft mouth set with the conical teeth of a predator. As a saxatilis-group fish it carries the group's two defining flank marks: a dark, roughly round humeral (shoulder) blotch just behind the gill cover, typically encircled by a pale ring, and a smaller spot on the upper part of the caudal peduncle. Ground colour is an olive-grey to brassy brown over the back, paling on the belly, often with a darker mid-lateral band and faint vertical barring that the fish can intensify or wash out with mood. The 'spangled pike' epithet of the group refers to the scattering of small silvery-white iridescent spots along the flank, most strongly developed in mature males. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced in this group: males grow larger and more heavily spangled and tend to develop herringbone muscle striations on the sides, while ripe females stay smaller, show a flush of pink or red on the belly and a clean white submarginal line in the dorsal fin, and become noticeably rounder in body. Ploeg's original description separates santosi from its many close relatives on fine scale-count, fin-ray and squamation characters rather than on any single eye-catching feature — the saxatilis-group species are notoriously hard to tell apart in life.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Rio Madeira basin of the southwestern Amazon, specifically the Rio Machado (Ji-Paraná) drainage and the adjacent Rio Jaci-Paraná in the Brazilian state of Rondônia; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes extends the Machado-drainage range marginally into neighbouring Bolivia. This places it on the Brazilian Shield rather than in the Amazon lowlands proper — the FEOW Madeira Brazilian Shield freshwater ecoregion, a landscape of clearwater rivers and streams draining ancient crystalline uplands. Habitat data specific to santosi are thin, but saxatilis-group pikes of this region are consistently fish of moving water with structured bottoms: clear to lightly stained streams and mid-sized rivers with moderate to brisk current, rocky and sandy beds, submerged logs and leaf litter, and well-developed marginal forest. The fish hold position close to this cover, using rock crevices and sunken wood both as ambush stations and as refuges. Like most of the basin's cichlids they live in warm, soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral water — broadly the 79–86 °F, pH ~5.5-7.0, low-mineral envelope typical of Shield clearwater. They are shoreline and shallow-river fish rather than deep-water animals; no deep-habitat records exist, and the documented occupancy is the upper few metres of the water column over the bank and channel margins.
Feeding
Saxatilia santosi is a carnivore in the classic pike-cichlid mould — an ambush predator that hangs motionless in cover and lunges at prey that strays within reach. FishBase places the genus around trophic level 3.2. At this small size the diet is dominated by aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, plus whatever small fish and fry it can engulf; the large, protrusible, sharply toothed mouth lets even a modest pike swallow surprisingly large prey for its length. Larger saxatilis-group relatives shift increasingly toward piscivory as they grow, and some are notorious egg-thieves that will rob the broods of other cichlids, but the staple for a 12-cm fish is the benthic invertebrate fauna of the rocky margins. In its community santosi fills the role of a small lie-in-wait micropredator, one of several pike species partitioning the prey field of the Machado drainage by size and microhabitat.
Mating
No courtship account exists for santosi specifically, so its mating behaviour is read from the well-documented biology of the saxatilis group, which is consistent across the assemblage. These pikes are territorial, pair-forming cichlids. Compatible pairs are not a given — males and females can be mutually aggressive, and the standard way keepers obtain a working pair is to raise a group of ten to fifteen juveniles together and let a bond form naturally, then remove the rest. Once a pair settles, both fish defend a territory centred on a chosen spawning recess, and pre-spawning behaviour includes mutual displays and the female's belly flushing pink or red as she ripens. Pair aggression is the dominant theme of the group's reproductive life: a bonded pair turns hostile toward almost any other tankmate, and an ill-matched pair may turn on each other, so the social tension that precedes spawning is as much a management problem as a courtship ritual.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in the wild for Saxatilia santosi, but the saxatilis group as a whole is a reliable biparental cave- or crevice-spawner, and santosi is expected to follow the pattern. The female deposits adhesive eggs on a sheltered surface — the inner wall of a cave, a rock overhang, or a hollow in driftwood — where the eggs are anchored by short filaments; congeneric saxatilis-group spawnings run on the order of a few hundred eggs (roughly 300-400 reported for the group), a figure that for a 12-cm fish should be read as the upper end. Care is shared and intense: the female tends and fans the clutch while the male patrols the territory perimeter, and both turn highly aggressive toward intruders. Eggs hatch in a few days and the larvae are typically free-swimming within about a week, after which the wrigglers are guarded as a tight school and shepherded between refuges. The fry grow quickly and take newly hatched brine shrimp readily; as with most pikes, size-grading the brood matters, since larger fry will cannibalise smaller siblings. A substantial water change is a well-known spawning trigger across the group, mimicking the freshening of the wet-season rivers.
In the aquarium
Saxatilia santosi is essentially never offered in the aquarium trade as itself — it is a small, scientifically described species from a single Rondônia drainage rather than a commercial fish — so dedicated husbandry accounts do not exist. What follows is the husbandry of the saxatilis-group dwarves and small pikes it belongs to, which travel under names like 'spangled pikes' and are widely regarded as one of the better entry points into the genus: medium-sized, hardy, and willing to breed.
A four-foot (47 in) tank is the sensible minimum for a pair or a small grow-out group; a 55-75 US gallon aquarium suffices for an established breeding pair. The single most important fixture is cover. These are ambush predators and territorial fish, and they need broken sightlines and one refuge per individual — caves, rock piles, dense driftwood and roots, and, frankly, lengths of PVC or wood tube (which keepers often disguise with glued-on sand or stone). Without enough hiding places, subordinate fish are harassed relentlessly and a bonded pair will not tolerate company. A sand or fine-gravel bed, subdued lighting and some shade from plants or wood suit them; they do not eat plants, though they will uproot them while excavating.
Water should mirror the warm, soft, lightly acidic Shield clearwater they come from — roughly 79–86 °F and pH around 6.0-7.0 — but the group is genuinely tolerant of harder, more neutral conditions and forgives ordinary tap water provided it is clean. Pikes are sensitive to dissolved waste over the long term (it costs them colour and condition), so steady filtration and a generous weekly water change are the backbone of keeping them well; a large water change also happens to be the classic breeding trigger. Feeding is straightforward once settled: live and frozen meaty foods — bloodworm, small crustaceans, the occasional earthworm or piece of fish — with most juveniles trainable onto quality pellets. A strict diet of muscle meat or feeder fish is a mistake; vary it.
The defining husbandry challenge is aggression, and it is intraspecific. Spangled pikes will establish dominance over similarly sized tankmates and then largely leave them alone, but they reserve their real hostility for their own species and other Crenicichla, and a breeding pair becomes dangerous to everything in the tank. The proven approach is a species tank or a very large, heavily structured community with robust, non-cichlid dither fish too large to be eaten, and the readiness to separate a pair that starts fighting. Do not mix small spangled pikes with the genus's larger species, which will simply kill them.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Saxatilia santosi as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018, published 2019; assessment by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio). The listing treats the species as endemic to Brazil, occurring in the Rio Machado and Rio Jaci-Paraná of the Madeira basin in Rondônia, and the Least Concern category reflects the absence of any documented species-level threat rather than evidence of a large or secure population — the fish is simply not well studied. It carries no CITES listing. The wider context, however, is one of the more heavily impacted corners of the Amazon: the lower Madeira and its Rondônia tributaries have seen large hydroelectric development (the Santo Antônio and Jirau dams on the Madeira mainstem), expanding deforestation along the arc of agricultural settlement, and gold-mining with its attendant mercury and siltation. A small-range Shield endemic tied to clearwater rivers and rocky structure is, in principle, more exposed to damming and sedimentation than a wide-ranging lowland generalist, so while santosi is not presently flagged as threatened, its long-term status is best read against the accelerating pressure on its home drainage.
