Taxonomy & naming
Saxatilia inpa was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Alex Ploeg in 1991, in his Amsterdam doctoral revision of the South American pike-cichlid genus Crenicichla — a single work that named fifteen new species and reorganised the genus into a set of species groups. The holotype, catalogued INPA 1427, came from Ilha do Careiro in the Amazon mainstream of Amazonas state, Brazil, with paratypes spread across the Manaus (INPA), São Paulo (MZUSP), London (BMNH), Geneva (MHNG), Rio de Janeiro (MNRJ) and Amsterdam (ZMA) museum collections. Ploeg placed the fish in the large Crenicichla saxatilis group, the assemblage of moderately sized, longitudinally striped pikes that ranges across much of cis-Andean South America. The Catalog of Fishes records the original combination as valid through Kullander's 2003 checklist treatment and subsequent works. In 2023, however, Varella and colleagues published an integrative phylogenetic revision of the pike cichlids (subtribe Crenicichlina) that split the historically unwieldy genus Crenicichla into several genera; under that classification the saxatilis-group species, including this one, are transferred to the resurrected genus Saxatilia, making the current name Saxatilia inpa. That generic reassignment is recent and not yet universally adopted — many databases, aquarists and earlier literature still use Saxatilia inpa — so both names will be encountered, but they refer to the same fish.
Morphology
Saxatilia inpa has the build typical of its genus: a slender, cylindrical, somewhat torpedo-shaped body with a long head, a large terminal mouth, and the dorsal and anal fins set well back so that the fish resembles the northern pike it is named for. FishBase gives a maximum recorded size of 7 in standard length (with a maximum published weight of about 127 g), placing it among the medium-sized pikes — substantially larger than the dwarf species of the wallacii group, but far smaller than giants such as Crenicichla lugubris. As a saxatilis-group member it carries a dark longitudinal stripe running from the snout through the eye along the flank toward the tail, overlaid in life by the spangling of pale spots and the suite of vertical bars that pike cichlids raise and lower with mood. Detailed colour notes for this particular species are sparse in the accessible literature; Ploeg's diagnosis separates it from its relatives chiefly on meristic and morphometric grounds (scale and fin-ray counts, body proportions, and head shape) rather than on a single conspicuous marking. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: as in most Crenicichla, females are the more ornamented sex, developing a rounded, often reddish belly and a light-and-dark marking in the soft dorsal fin when in spawning condition, while males tend to grow larger and longer-snouted. Specific published measurements of dimorphism for Saxatilia inpa are lacking, so this is read from close congeners.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Amazon basin of Brazil, where FishBase reports it from a large area of the drainage; the IUCN assessment describes it as widely distributed across the Amazon basin and many of its tributaries, and the Catalog of Fishes extends the range to include adjacent Bolivia. The type locality, Ilha do Careiro, lies in the central Amazon just downstream of the meeting of the silt-laden whitewater Solimões and the blackwater Rio Negro near Manaus, in the Amazonas Lowlands freshwater ecoregion — a lowland mosaic of river channels, floodplain lakes (várzea and igarapés), and seasonally inundated forest. Pike cichlids of the saxatilis group are generally fish of marginal, structured habitats: they hold to the cover of fallen wood, leaf litter, root tangles and aquatic vegetation along channel and lake margins rather than open water. No in-situ water chemistry has been published specifically for Saxatilia inpa, but the central-Amazon lowlands it inhabits are warm year-round and range from soft, acidic blackwater to more mineral-rich whitewater depending on the channel; congeners are recorded from roughly pH 5–7 and water temperatures near 79–86 °F. As a benthopelagic fish of these shallow margins it lives in the upper few metres of the water column, typically within the top one to a few metres along the bank.
Feeding
Saxatilia inpa is a predatory ambush hunter, the ecological role that defines the genus. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, consistent with a carnivore that takes a mix of prey. No dedicated gut-content study of this species is in the accessible literature, but its build — the elongate body, the large mouth, and the rearward-set fins that allow a sudden lunge — is that of a lie-in-wait piscivore and invertivore. By analogy with the well-studied type species of its group, Crenicichla saxatilis, which feeds essentially on aquatic insects, smaller fishes and some plant material, Saxatilia inpa is best understood as a generalist predator of small fishes and large benthic and drifting invertebrates, snapping up whatever moving prey it can engulf from concealment among wood and litter. In the floodplain community it functions as one of the mid-level ambush predators of the structured margins, complementing the open-water peacock basses (Cichla) and the smaller, invertebrate-picking fishes around it.
Mating
Reproduction has not been documented for Saxatilia inpa specifically, so its mating behaviour is read from the genus, which is remarkably consistent. Pike cichlids form monogamous pairs and are biparental. Pair formation centres on a defended territory anchored to a cave or crevice — an undercut bank, a hollow in submerged wood, or a gap among roots and rocks. The female, the more brightly coloured sex, signals readiness through her swollen, often reddened belly and the contrasting pattern of her dorsal fin; courtship involves mutual displays, lateral presentation, and joint defence of the chosen site against intruders. Outside of breeding these are not gregarious fish — adults are territorial toward one another, and aggression between members of a forming pair, or between rivals, is a normal part of how pairs sort themselves out. The saxatilis-group pikes are generally regarded as among the more robust and manageable members of the genus in this respect, but the underlying biology is the same: a tightly bonded pair holding and defending a small, structure-based territory.
Breeding
Like all pike cichlids, Saxatilia inpa is a biparental cave spawner. There is no published account of breeding in this exact species, so the description here is the genus-typical pattern, which is well established for saxatilis-group fishes and very uniform across Crenicichla. The female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the wall or ceiling of a sheltered cave; the eggs stick fast and resist being swept away by current. The female tends and fans the eggs inside the cave while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory. Eggs typically hatch in about three to four days depending on temperature, and the wrigglers become free-swimming roughly three to four days after that, at which point both parents guard the mobile fry. Published clutch sizes for medium pikes of this group run to the low hundreds of eggs (a genus-typical figure of roughly 100–300 is reasonable for a fish of this size, though no count specific to Saxatilia inpa exists). Warm, soft, clean water and a rich diet of live or meaty foods are the usual triggers reported for the group; fry grow quickly on small live foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp, and—because pike fry will cannibalise smaller siblings—size-grading the brood improves survival.
In the aquarium
Saxatilia inpa is not a commonly traded aquarium fish, and it lacks the dedicated hobbyist literature that surrounds showier pikes such as the dwarf species or the big lugubris-group fish. As a medium-sized saxatilis-group pike, however, its requirements are well predicted by close relatives, and the group has a deserved reputation as the most approachable of the pike cichlids for a keeper willing to provide space. A single fish or a confirmed pair needs a long tank rather than a tall one — on the order of 47 in or more of length for an adult around 7 in, with the footprint, not the volume, being what matters to a bottom-oriented ambush predator. The defining requirement is cover: caves built from rock, lengths of PVC pipe, coconut shells and bogwood give the fish the retreats it needs and let a pair establish a defensible site. A sand or fine-gravel substrate, subdued lighting, and tough or floating plants round out a naturalistic layout.
Water should mirror the warm central-Amazon lowlands: a temperature around 79–86 °F and, for long-term health, soft to moderately hard water that is slightly acidic to neutral. A useful point in the group's favour is tolerance — the saxatilis (spangled) pikes will live and even spawn in harder, more alkaline water provided quality is excellent, which makes them more forgiving than the chemistry-sensitive dwarf species. That tolerance does not extend to dissolved waste: like all pikes these are messy carnivores that demand strong filtration and large, regular water changes to keep nitrogenous waste near zero.
Feeding is straightforward for a committed predator — frozen and live meaty foods (earthworms, prawn, mysis, suitably sized fish or invertebrate prey) are taken eagerly, and many specimens can be weaned onto good sinking carnivore pellets. Live feeder fish are not necessary and carry disease risk. On compatibility, treat this as a predator first: tankmates must be too large to be swallowed and robust enough to share a tank with a territorial fish, while anything small enough to fit the mouth will eventually be eaten. Pikes can be kept with other large, fast South Americans, but two adults of this species in too small a tank is a recipe for serious aggression, especially around spawning. The most common keeper mistakes are an undersized tank, too little cover, and underestimating the bioload — none of them unique to this species, but all of them magnified by a fish that is, at heart, an ambush hunter.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Saxatilia inpa as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out on 7 November 2018 by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022; it records a stable population and identifies no significant threats to the species. The justification rests on the fish's wide distribution across the Amazon basin and the many tributaries in which it is reported to be frequent and abundant, together with the absence of any documented population-level pressure. It carries no CITES listing and is not a fishery or aquarium-trade target of any consequence. As with every widespread Amazonian fish, that comfortable status sits against a backdrop of broader, basin-scale pressures on Amazonian freshwaters — hydroelectric dams, deforestation, mining and shifting flood-pulse regimes — but none of these is documented as a present danger to this particular species, and as a habitat generalist of the lowland floodplain it is far less exposed than the basin's narrow-range endemics.
