Trematocranus labifer was described in 1935 by Ethelwynn Trewavas, originally in the genus Haplochromis, during her pioneering early survey of Lake Malawi's cichlid fauna. It was later placed in Trematocranus, a genus combining the Greek trema, “hole” or “perforation,” with kranion, “skull,” likely referencing a distinctive cranial feature noted in the type species, Trematocranus placodon — the genus's best-studied member and the one whose remarkable snail-extraction feeding habit gives the genus its scientific reputation. The species epithet labifer combines the Latin labium, “lip,” with ferre, “to bear” or “carry,” describing thickened lips that distinguish this species from other, thinner-lipped Trematocranus.
Morphology
Trematocranus labifer is expected to share the compact body and mouth adapted for precise feeding typical of its genus, with thickened lips — the feature named in its epithet — setting it apart from congeners with more ordinary lip proportions.
