Taxonomy & naming
Wallaciia heckeli was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Alex Ploeg in 1989, in the German aquarium journal Die Aquarien- und Terrarienzeitschrift (DATZ), in the same paper in which he named the dwarf pike Crenicichla regani. The type locality is Cachoeira Porteira on the Trombetas system, Pará, Brazil, and the holotype (IRSNB 768) is held at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels, with paratypes distributed among the INPA collection in Manaus, the IRSNB, the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM) in Stockholm, and the Zoological Museum Amsterdam. The species honours Johann Jakob Heckel (1790–1857), the Vienna-based ichthyologist who erected the genus Crenicichla in 1840 — so the name is, in effect, a pike cichlid named after the man who founded the pike-cichlid genus. Within Crenicichla it falls in the so-called wallacii group, the assemblage of dwarf species that also includes Crenicichla wallacii, Crenicichla regani, Crenicichla compressiceps, Crenicichla notophthalmus, Crenicichla urosema and Crenicichla virgatula. In 2023 a major integrative phylogenetic revision of the pike cichlids by Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández dismembered the old catch-all Crenicichla: the wallacii-group dwarfs were transferred to a newly erected genus, Wallaciia (type species Crenicichla wallacii), so that the current valid combination is Wallaciia heckeli (Ploeg, 1989). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase now list the fish under Wallaciia, though most of the hobby and trade continue to use the long-familiar Wallaciia heckeli, and that is the name carried here. The catalogue extends the recorded range to Brazil and Bolivia, but the species' core — and its type material — belongs to the Trombetas.
Morphology
Wallaciia heckeli is a genuine dwarf: FishBase gives a maximum of about 2 in standard length, and Kullander reported it as the smallest of the wallacii-group pikes at under roughly 2.5 in. Ad Konings gives a maximum of about 3 in, a figure that is not really a conflict once the tail is accounted for (standard length excludes the caudal fin, so a 2 in SL pike runs close to 3 in once measured to the tip of the tail); he also notes that in the field almost every W. heckeli seen runs considerably smaller than that ceiling, so a wild adult of 1.5–2 in is the norm rather than the exception. The body plan is unmistakably that of a pike cichlid in miniature — elongate, cylindrical to slightly compressed, with a pointed head, a large terminal mouth set with fine conical teeth, and the dorsal and anal fins carried far back to drive the short, darting strikes of an ambush hunter. The base colour is a muted brown to olive-grey, and the most consistent markings are a series of nine to ten dark vertical bars down the flanks together with a single median spot on the caudal peduncle (the narrow region just before the tail). A dark stripe typically runs from the snout through the eye onto the gill cover, as in many small Crenicichla. Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern that defines the whole dwarf-pike group: ripe females are rounder and more vividly coloured, and in several related dwarfs the females carry a ringed, eye-like ocellus on the dorsal fin. Wallaciia heckeli does not follow that pattern: Konings places it among the dwarf pikes that substitute a pale, white submarginal band for the ocellus, a band that visibly loses brightness once courtship has passed its peak. That fits with Kullander's separate observation that breeding females carry 'nearly immaculate' dorsal and caudal fins — lacking the bold, ringed spot seen in some relatives — which together make the absence of a true ocellus a useful diagnostic feature. As with most pike cichlids, males tend to grow somewhat larger and longer-finned than females.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the lower Rio Trombetas, a northern (left-bank) clearwater-to-blackwater tributary of the Amazon in the Brazilian state of Pará; the Catalog of Fishes additionally records it from the Trombetas drainage into Bolivia, but its documented heartland is the cataract zone around Cachoeira Porteira, the large waterfall after which the type locality is named. This is rapids-and-rock country, and Wallaciia heckeli is described as a rheophilic dwarf — a species of flowing, broken water among rocks and submerged wood rather than the still, weedy backwaters favoured by some of its relatives such as Crenicichla notophthalmus and Crenicichla regani. Ad Konings groups it with Crenicichla urosema and Crenicichla compressiceps as the fast-water specialists of the dwarf pikes — strong, active swimmers with larger feeding territories than the still-water species — and singles out W. heckeli as the most specialized of that trio: it is strongly bottom-oriented, usually found hugging rocks or working through the rubble of the streambed rather than holding station in mid-water. The waters of the Trombetas are warm, soft and acidic, the typical chemistry of the Amazon's nutrient-poor clear- and blackwater rivers: low conductivity, little dissolved mineral content, pH on the acidic side of neutral, and temperatures in the high 20s Celsius. FishBase classes the fish as freshwater, benthopelagic and tropical. No precise in-situ depth has been published for this species; like other small rheophilic pikes it lives in the shallow, well-oxygenated marginal and rapids habitat, a band of perhaps a metre or two, where it shelters among rock crevices and leaf litter.
Feeding
Like all pike cichlids, Wallaciia heckeli is a carnivorous ambush predator, built to lie still among rocks and wood and then dart out at passing prey. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.1, consistent with a micro-predator rather than a fish-eating giant. At its tiny adult size it cannot take the fish prey that the metre-long lugubris-group pikes swallow whole; instead, dwarf pikes of the wallacii group subsist largely on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms and the occasional small fish or fry small enough to fit the mouth. Several of its close relatives (notably Crenicichla compressiceps) are documented as primarily insectivorous, and Wallaciia heckeli is best understood the same way: a bottom-oriented predator of the rapids and leaf-litter that picks invertebrates from among the rocks. In the community of its rocky Amazonian habitat it functions as one of the small predatory cichlids, sharing the substrate with other dwarf pikes, Apistogramma, and rheophilic catfishes.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Wallaciia heckeli has not been documented in detail in the wild, and the species is rare in aquaria, so much of its mating biology is inferred from the well-studied dwarf pikes of the same group. Konings records that outside the breeding season juveniles and subadults live solitary, with adults sometimes found in pairs — a loosely social pattern rather than the tightly bonded shoaling seen in some other cichlids. These fish are intensely territorial, and intraspecific aggression is the defining management problem of the whole assemblage: keepers report that even a small group, raised together, will quickly resolve into a single dominant pair, and that sparring between ripening females escalates sharply as spawning approaches. Pair formation is preceded by an extended courtship in which the male displays to the female with spread fins, the pair selects and cleans a sheltered cavity, and the bond is reinforced over several days before eggs are laid. Once a pair holds a breeding territory, Konings notes that both sexes jointly defend it — that joint defence continues only up to the point the fry appear, after which guard duty is handed off (see Breeding). As in other wallacii-group pikes, the female is the more brightly coloured sex and takes the leading role at the nest. The dwarf pikes are cave spawners, so the courtship is organized around a defensible crevice rather than an open substrate.
Breeding
Wallaciia heckeli is a biparental cave spawner, the reproductive mode shared across the wallacii-group dwarf pikes; its breeding has not been reported in full detail in the literature, so the account here is drawn largely from its well-bred relatives, with one specific field note from Konings on parental division of labour. The female deposits her eggs inside a sheltered cavity — in the wild a rock crevice or hollow under wood, in captivity typically a length of ceramic pipe, a coconut shell or a flowerpot — often attaching them to the ceiling of the chamber. She then tends the clutch, fanning the eggs and removing any that fungus, while the male holds and patrols the surrounding territory. Eggs hatch in roughly three to five days depending on temperature, and once the yolk sac is absorbed the free-swimming fry take small live foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp and microworms. Konings records that for this species and its fast-water relatives, territorial guard duty is shared by both parents only up to the point the fry appear; once offspring are present, that task passes over completely to the male, freeing the female — an arrangement worth correcting our earlier, vaguer claim that both parents simply 'guard the brood' throughout. Exact clutch size for Wallaciia heckeli has not been published; dwarf pike cichlids of this group are modest spawners, typically producing on the order of a few dozen to a couple of hundred eggs (genus-typical figure for the small wallacii-group pikes). Captive spawning is triggered, as in the related dwarfs, by soft acidic water, a large partial water change, a temperature rise into the high 20s to low 30s Celsius, the addition of tannins, and heavy feeding on live foods.
In the aquarium
Wallaciia heckeli itself is very seldom seen in the hobby — it is an Amazonian rarity from a single river system — but it is a textbook member of the dwarf pike-cichlid group, several of whose species (Crenicichla regani, Crenicichla compressiceps, Crenicichla notophthalmus) are well established with aquarists, and the husbandry is essentially identical. These are small fish, so the tank can be modest by pike-cichlid standards: a base of about 39.5 in in length and 19.5–23.5 in in depth (front to back) is the recommended minimum for a few young fish, with height being relatively unimportant since they live close to the bottom. The single most important husbandry fact is their intraspecific aggression: the proven approach is to grow on a small group and then keep only the resulting pair, or at most one or two pairs of a species, in a heavily structured tank.
Aquascape for hiding places. The tank should be richly furnished with driftwood, rockwork, leaf litter and ceramic pipes or other tube-like caves, which serve double duty as daytime refuges and as spawning sites. The substrate should be sand or fine gravel. Because Wallaciia heckeli is a rheophilic, rapids-dwelling species, it appreciates moderate, well-oxygenated current — an internal powerhead or filter return aimed across the rockwork suits it, unlike the still-water dwarf pikes that prefer calm tanks. Lighting should be subdued; bright light makes these fish shy and retiring. Subdued lighting with floating plants or shade-tolerant species (Microsorum, Cryptocoryne, Echinodorus) helps both the fish's confidence and the look of the tank.
Water should mirror the warm, soft, acidic Trombetas: a temperature around 82 °F (roughly 79–86 °F), a pH on the acidic side (about 5.5–7.0), and low to moderate hardness (in the region of 5–10 °dGH, though the more tolerant dwarfs adapt to neutral, harder water). Pristine water quality is non-negotiable — these fish are sensitive to dissolved-waste accumulation, and neglected maintenance leads to bacterial problems and shortened lifespans. Strong biological filtration, good aeration and consistent partial water changes (replacing with water of matched parameters) are the foundation of keeping them in health; in good conditions they live perhaps four to six years.
Feeding is straightforward once the fish are settled. Wild-caught specimens may insist on live food at first, but the dwarf pikes generally learn to accept frozen and even prepared foods. A varied diet of frozen and live bloodworm, glassworm, krill, adult brine shrimp and similar small invertebrate fare keeps them in condition; a homemade seafood-and-vegetable paste also works well. Tankmates should be peaceful species too large to be eaten — eartheaters, medium peaceful catfish, and robust characins make sensible companions, while the real danger is always to one another. This is a fish for the experienced keeper who understands pike-cichlid temperament, not a community novelty.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Wallaciia heckeli as Least Concern (assessed 18 May 2022, published 2022, by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio), with the population reported as stable and the only listed country of occurrence being Brazil. It carries no CITES listing and is of no commercial fisheries interest. As a small, range-restricted endemic of a single Amazonian tributary, however, its fortunes are tied closely to the health of the lower Rio Trombetas. The Trombetas basin has long been a focus of large-scale bauxite mining (around Porto Trombetas), and the broader Amazon is under accelerating freshwater pressure from damming, deforestation, mining-related contamination and altered flood regimes — pressures that fall hardest on narrow-range, rapids-dependent fishes like this one. None of these is documented as a present threat to the species, and its Least Concern status reflects an apparently stable population today, but a rheophilic endemic known essentially from one cataract system warrants ongoing attention rather than complacency.
