Wallaciia regani, Regan's dwarf pike, is one of the smallest and most widely distributed of the South American pike cichlids — a slender, leaf-litter micropredator rarely longer than a finger that ranges across much of the central Amazon. Among hobbyists it is one of the best-loved of the so-called dwarf pikes (the wallacii group), prized for a vivid sexual dimorphism in which the ripe female flushes a cherry-red belly and flashes one or more eye-like ocelli on her dorsal fin. A 2023 revision of the pike cichlids moved it, with its dwarf relatives, into the new genus Wallaciia, though the aquarium and ichthyological literature still know it overwhelmingly as a Crenicichla.

Taxonomy & naming

Wallaciia regani was described in 1989 by the Dutch ichthyologist Alex J. Ploeg in the German aquarium journal Die Aquarien- und Terrarien-Zeitschrift (DATZ 42(3): 164), part of the wave of work that finally untangled the bewildering little dwarf pikes of the Amazon. Its type locality is a left-bank tributary of the Cachoeira Porteira on the Rio Trombetas system, Pará, Brazil — a northern Amazon affluent — but Ploeg recorded the species from numerous other localities across the basin, and it is now regarded as one of the most broadly distributed of all pike cichlids. The epithet honours the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan (1878–1943), the British Museum's great cichlid monographer, who described several of regani's close dwarf relatives (notophthalmus, wallacii) early in the twentieth century. Historically the fish was much confused: before Ploeg's work, animals now called regani were routinely shipped and figured as Crenicichla notophthalmus, a Rio Negro species that Kullander (1990) later restricted to that drainage. That confusion has deep roots. An expedition led by J.D. Haseman collected the first specimens now recognised as this fish as far back as 1909, at Villa Bella and Bastos on the Rio Guaporé — but Haseman (1911) misidentified them as Crenicichla macrophthalma Heckel, a much larger species he had also collected and separately (and correctly) redescribed as C. santarensis (now itself a synonym of true macrophthalma). In the same paper a female from Santarém, differing from the type in several details, was assigned to C. dorsocellata. Two years later Charles Tate Regan revised the genus a second time: he reassigned Haseman's Santarém female to a newly described species, C. notophthalmus, and concluded that Haseman's C. macrophthalma was in fact identical to C. wallacii, a species Regan himself had described from British Guiana in 1905. It took Ploeg's 1989 revision, working from a large series of specimens, to finally untangle this century-old knot and give the fish its own valid name — which is also why it still carries Regan's own name today.

Regani sits in the dwarf-pike assemblage long known informally as the wallacii group — the small, large-scaled pikes whose females typically carry ocellated dorsal fins. According to the distribution data Ploeg published (1989, 1991), the species is spread across almost half of the Amazon basin, an area of roughly 3 million km2 — one of the widest ranges of any pike cichlid, dwarf or giant. Its status in the Rio Negro remains genuinely unsettled: Ploeg presumed regani was absent there, its niche filled instead by the true Rio Negro endemic C. notophthalmus, but later field collecting (reported by Windisch) turned up dwarf pikes closely resembling regani living alongside notophthalmus in that same drainage — so whether regani itself reaches the Rio Negro, or is there represented by an as-yet-unresolved look-alike, is still an open question. A separate, more strongly built and still scientifically undescribed relative from the Rio Xingu drainage near Altamira circulates in the hobby as Crenicichla sp. cf. regani; it differs from true regani in a smaller adult size, shorter snout, deeper body and more conspicuous tail markings, and should not be conflated with it. In 2023 Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira & López-Fernández published an integrative phylogenetic revision of the pike cichlids (subtribe Crenicichlina) and split the old, sprawling Crenicichla into several genera; the dwarf pikes of the wallacii group, regani among them, were transferred to a new genus Wallaciia, so the currently valid combination is Wallaciia regani. Because virtually the entire body of aquarium and field literature predates or ignores that change, this profile keeps the familiar Crenicichla heading while flagging the new name.

Morphology

This is a true dwarf among pikes, though reported maxima vary by source. FishBase gives 3 in standard length; aquarists generally cite roughly 3 to 5 inches (3–5 in) total length; and Konings' Enjoying Cichlids tabulates a maximum of 5.5 in, the largest figure of the dwarf-pike group covered there (compressiceps 8, heckeli 7, notophthalmus 12, urosema 10, C. sp. cf. regani 9). In the field the largest of the roughly eight dwarf pike-cichlid species described in this wave of taxonomic work rarely exceed 4 in total length in the wild, so well-fed aquarium fish likely account for the highest published figures; males reach the upper end of the size range and females stay noticeably smaller, around half to two-thirds the male's bulk. The body is the classic pike-cichlid form in miniature — elongate, cylindrical, with a pointed head and a large, slightly upturned mouth built for ambushing small prey — but far less massively jawed than the predatory giants of the genus. Juveniles of both sexes wear a dark longitudinal band that runs from the snout, back through the bright red eye, and along the flank into the tail. As fish mature this body stripe fades to leave a snout stripe, a dark blotch behind the eye, and a spot at the caudal base, though it flares back when the fish is stressed; males tend to keep the full stripe even when adult. Both sexes show a series of faint vertical half-bars dropping from the dorsal-fin base, and thin red-and-white marginal bands edging the dorsal and the top of the tail. The species' showpiece is its sexual dimorphism. Ripe females develop a swollen, intensely cherry-red to crimson belly and display one to several black, white-and-red-ringed ocelli (eyespots) on the dorsal fin — a polymorphic feature that varies from a single clean eyespot to two or three, to an irregular black splash, even to a near-uniformly black dorsal flecked with white. Males lack the red belly and the bold ocelli; some develop elongated, separated anterior dorsal spines reminiscent of a cockatoo cichlid's crest. The ocellated, blushing female is a reliable field and tank mark for the dwarf pikes.

Habitat

Wallaciia regani is an Amazonian lowland fish with an unusually wide range — per Ploeg's own distribution data it spans roughly 3 million km2, close to half of the entire Amazon basin — recorded from the Trombetas of its type locality across much of the central Amazon and into the Tapajós, Xingu and Araguaia systems to the south, plus the Rio Arapiuns near the lower Tapajós; the Xingu form is often cited separately as Crenicichla cf. regani, a related but distinct, still-undescribed dwarf pike. Whether it also reaches the Rio Negro, where it may be represented by a look-alike population living alongside the true Rio Negro endemic C. notophthalmus, remains an open question (see Taxonomy). It is fundamentally a blackwater and clearwater species of quiet, structured margins: hobbyist and field accounts place it along still or slow shorelines, frequently under and among submerged leaf litter and root tangles, where it shares cover with Apistogramma and other small fishes. Its range occasionally extends into whitewater and more mineral-rich, higher-pH systems, which is part of why it tolerates a broader chemical window than many soft-water dwarves. The water it favours is warm and soft to moderately soft: FishBase lists a tropical preference of about 75–81 °F, a pH up to around 7.2, and hardness from roughly 3 °dH upward, while in-situ blackwater habitats run acidic and very low in dissolved minerals. As a small benthic ambusher it stays close to the bottom and to cover rather than ranging in open water. Depth is not formally tabulated, but as a leaf-litter and shoreline fish it occupies the shallow, structured margins — on the order of the upper metre or two — rather than deep channels.

Feeding

Regani is a micropredator: a small, opportunistic carnivore that ambushes from cover and takes whatever invertebrate or tiny fish prey it can engulf. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with a diet of insect larvae, small crustaceans, aquatic invertebrates and the occasional small fish or fry hunted among leaf litter and roots — the literature describes regani, alongside its close relative C. notophthalmus, as at least partially piscivorous, feeding on small fishes as well as invertebrates. Its jaws are relatively short and weak compared with the larger predatory Crenicichla, and its mouth notably small even by the standards of its own genus — a build that permits a more varied diet, including small crustaceans, rather than the almost fish-exclusive habits of the deep-bodied rheophilic dwarf pikes such as C. compressiceps. In the aquarium they thrive on a varied carnivore menu of foods no larger than their mouths — frozen and live bloodworm (mosquito larvae; red-coloured larvae are best avoided), glassworm, mysis, cyclops, daphnia, shrimp-mix and adult brine shrimp. The hobby literature is explicit that dry food is not recommended for this group; many keepers do report success gradually weaning captive-bred fish onto quality sinking pellets as a supplement, but frozen and live meaty foods remain the reliable staple rather than an old superstition to be dismissed. Within its community regani functions as a small predator of the structured shallows, occupying much the same trophic niche as the dwarf Apistogramma and acaras it lives among, and competing with them for the same invertebrate prey.

Mating

Like its congeners, regani forms monogamous pairs and is markedly territorial, with intraspecific aggression that intensifies sharply as the breeding season approaches. Hobbyists who have kept colonies describe bonded pairs courting continually, the sparring between rival fish — particularly ripening females — rising in frequency and ferocity as condition builds. Courtship is the standard cichlid display sequence: the fish parade with spread fins, the female showing off her reddening belly and dorsal ocelli, the pair sizing one another up over a period that can run for several days before spawning. The female takes the lead in selecting and preparing a cave. Pair compatibility matters: in confined quarters two evenly matched fish can fight destructively, and the usual advice is to grow out a small group, let pairs form naturally, and then give each pair enough space and broken sightlines — caves, wood, plants — that subordinate and rival fish can keep out of one another's way. This combination of strong pairing drive and short-fuse territoriality is the central husbandry challenge of the dwarf pikes.

Breeding

Wallaciia regani is a biparental cave spawner, and it is one of the more attainable dwarf pikes to breed — alongside compressiceps it is usually recommended as the species to start with. A ripe pair selects and cleans a cave — in the wild a crevice or hollow among roots and litter, in the aquarium a length of ceramic pipe, a coconut shell or a flowerpot — and the female attaches the eggs to its walls or ceiling, where the male fertilises them. As is typical of the genus, parental roles divide while the clutch is on the cave wall: the female tends the eggs, fanning them and picking out any that fungus, while the male holds and patrols the surrounding territory, and both parents defend that territory jointly as long as no free-swimming fry are present. The eggs hatch in roughly three to five days depending on temperature. Once the fry become free-swimming, however, care in this species does not stay biparental: guarding duty is reported to pass entirely to the male, who alone shepherds and defends the brood from that point on. The fry take newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm once the yolk sac is absorbed. A precise wild clutch count is not documented; as a small cave-spawning pike, regani lays a modest clutch on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a couple of hundred eggs, in line with its dwarf congeners rather than the larger Crenicichla. The reliable captive triggers are well established: very soft, acidic water (RO water remineralised lightly, with added tannins to deter egg fungus), a generous live-food diet to bring the female into condition, a raised temperature around 84–86 °F, and a large water change to simulate the rainy season.

In the aquarium

Regani is among the most rewarding entry points into pike-cichlid keeping: small, full of character, beautifully marked, and genuinely tank-sized. A footprint of about 39.5 in long by 19.5–23.5 in wide is the practical minimum for a few young fish or a single pair; height matters little, as these are bottom-oriented animals. The single most important husbandry truth is that they are territorial and can be sharply aggressive toward their own kind, so the tank must be broken up with cover — driftwood, rockwork, leaf litter, and several lengths of ceramic pipe or other caves — to fracture sightlines and give every fish a refuge. Keeping just one or two established pairs of a species, rather than a crowd of rivals, is the usual route to peace.

Water should mirror the warm, soft Amazonian margins they come from. Regani is more tolerant than its blackwater relatives — it does well around pH 6.5–7.0 and is often maintained successfully near neutral at 10–13 °dGH — but the literature is emphatic that this species, like C. notophthalmus, does best in genuinely soft, acidic water, and for long-term health and especially for breeding that softer, more acidic target (lower pH, low hardness, a tannin stain from leaves or wood) should be treated as the real requirement rather than an option. A temperature of about 79–86 °F suits them. A well-matched pair can be kept in a tank as modest as about 25 US gal, though more space and more visual cover always reduce friction. These fish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality and to dissolved waste, so strong biological filtration, good aeration, and regular partial water changes (matching the tank's parameters) are essential; neglect invites bacterial infection and a shortened life. In good conditions they can live four to six years. Because the species comes from still and slow waters, avoid a powerful current — gentle flow only.

For décor and substrate, fine sand or smooth fine gravel with scattered wood, roots, dried leaves, and dim lighting recreates the litter biotope and lets the fish behave naturally; subdued light keeps them bold rather than skulking. Feed a varied carnivore diet of frozen and live foods, supplemented with sinking prepared foods for captive-bred stock. Tankmates should be chosen for temperament and size: peaceful, mid-to-upper-water dither fish such as larger tetras or pencilfish draw the pike out and reduce its shyness, while bottom companions should be robust enough not to be bullied yet too large to be eaten. Avoid anything small enough to become prey, and avoid fin-nippers. The recurring beginner mistakes are an under-furnished tank that offers no escape from territorial squabbles, water that is too hard or too dirty, and pairing two ill-matched adults in cramped quarters.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Wallaciia regani as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018, published 2022, by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio). The rating reflects the species' very wide distribution across the central Amazon basin and the absence of any documented basin-wide threat to its populations; it carries no CITES or CMS listing and is of no commercial fisheries interest. It is collected for the ornamental aquarium trade, but as a small, widespread and adaptable fish it is far less vulnerable than the basin's many narrow-range endemic pikes — some of which (the rapids-restricted dwarves of single rivers) face genuine pressure from damming. The broader backdrop is the accelerating strain on Amazonian freshwaters from hydroelectric dams, deforestation, mining and altered flood regimes; none of these is recorded as a present danger to regani specifically, but they are the context against which the long-term security of even a common, widely ranging species should be read.
