Taxonomy & naming
Bario steindachneri was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1893. The specific epithet honours the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner (1834–1919), a prolific describer of South American freshwater fishes who worked extensively with Amazonian material held in European museum collections. The authority parenthetical indicates that the species was described under a genus name no longer considered the primary placement.
A 2024 phylogenetic revision by Melo and colleagues erected or reinstated the genus Bario and transferred this species accordingly; Catalog of Fishes now records the current valid name as Bario steindachneri (Eigenmann, 1893). This atlas entry retains the Moenkhausia heading for continuity with earlier listings while noting the updated placement. Moenkhausia is the largest genus within Characidae and has long served as a wastebasket for medium-sized, deep-bodied Neotropical tetras pending closer molecular work; ongoing revisions continue to partition it.
