Northwestern Madagascar holds the last strongholds of cichlids that split from the rest of the family before there was an Atlantic Ocean. When Gondwana broke apart, Madagascar carried away a primitive cichlid stock that survives today as two genera — the deep-bodied damba (Paretroplus) and the slimmer Ptychochromis — found nowhere else on Earth. They are living evidence of how old the family is. The same wet basins that gave them refuge, draining the Tsaratanana Massif into floodplain lakes like Kinkony and Tseny, are now ringed by rice paddies, choked with silt off cleared hillsides, and stocked with introduced tilapia and snakeheads. The result is a fauna that ranks among the most endangered freshwater fishes anywhere, several species clinging to a single lake or river.
Geography & hydrology
This ecoregion — FEOW Ecoregion 580, delineated by John Sparks of the American Museum of Natural History — takes in every westward-flowing drainage from the northern tip of Madagascar near Antsiranana south to the Mahavavy du Sud basin below Mahajanga, plus the volcanic island of Nosy Be offshore. From north to south the major river basins are the Mananjeba, North Mahavavy (Mahavavy du Nord), Sambirano, Ankofia, Sofia, Anjobony, Mahajamba, Betsiboka, and South Mahavavy. All of them run off the island's central highlands toward the Mozambique Channel and the Indian Ocean (FEOW Ecoregion 580; Sparks & Stiassny, 2003).
The defining feature of the northwest is rain. Basins draining the Tsaratanana Massif — Madagascar's highest ground — and Montagne d'Ambre catch more than 2,19.5 in a year, far more than the dry western and southern basins to the south, and the boundary of the ecoregion itself was drawn along the 1,15.5 in annual rainfall line. That extra water buys geomorphic and biological diversity. The same rivers also swing less violently between flood and drought than the western drainages, where seasonal desiccation can wipe out a fish population outright. Here, perennial flow gave endemic lineages somewhere to persist (Aldegheri, 1972; FEOW Ecoregion 580).
Habitat ranges widely across short distances. The far north holds the tsingy — fretted limestone karst — of the Ankarana reserve. Steep, rocky, clearwater streams pour off the Tsaratanana highlands. Nosy Be carries a cluster of crater lakes. And along the coastal lowlands sit large, shallow floodplain lakes: Lake Kinkony, the island's second-largest, plus Andrapongy and the lakes of the Sarodrano region. These lakes are oligotrophic, nutrient-poor, very shallow and naturally turbid, fed and flushed by the rivers that wind through deciduous dry forest before reaching the sea. Hydrology follows the monsoon: a single wet season fills the rivers and spreads them over their floodplains, then the dry months draw them down again, the pulse that the cichlids time their spawning to (FEOW Ecoregion 580; Sparks 2002).
Water & habitat
Water chemistry here sets the northwest apart from the rest of Madagascar. Compared with the island's eastern rivers, the northwestern and western basins run at a higher pH — close to neutral rather than mildly acidic — with lower conductivity, warmer temperatures, and markedly higher dissolved carbonates, meaning more alkalinity. Kristin Riseng's 1997 survey of Malagasy fishes and waters established those contrasts, and also noted that the floodplain lakes of the northwest carry higher conductivity than comparable lakes in the east (Riseng, 1997; FEOW Ecoregion 580).
The rivers themselves are a study in extremes of gradient. Up near the Tsaratanana Massif and Montagne d'Ambre, streams run steep, cool, fast and clear over rock. By the time those drainages reach the coastal plain they have slowed into wide, meandering, perennial rivers braided through dry deciduous forest, several of them — the Mahavavy du Nord, Sambirano, Ankofia-Anjingo, and the Mangarahara-Amboaboa system of the Sofia basin — holding unusually high habitat diversity for the island, and with it the richest endemic fish communities. Many of those communities sit inside a single basin and nowhere else (FEOW Ecoregion 580; Sparks, 2002).
The lakes are a different world. Lake Kinkony and Lac Tseny are broad, shallow sheets of warm, turbid water, naturally murky and seasonally connected to their feeder rivers and surrounding marsh. Kinkony anchors the Mahavavy-Kinkony wetland complex, a Ramsar site and Key Biodiversity Area of roughly 302,000 hectares that strings together dry forest, freshwater and marine wetlands, mangroves, swamp forest and grassland around Marambitsy and Boeny bays (FAPBM; Mahavavy-Kinkony complex). Lac Tseny, about 760 hectares in the Sofia region, is among the larger lakes of that drainage and matters out of all proportion to its size: it is the only lake holding a wild population of the critically endangered pinstripe damba (Conservation Leadership Programme, 2024). Paretroplus as a genus turns up across this gradient — rivers, shallow floodplain lakes, even brackish lower reaches — which is part of why the group radiated into so many forms (Sparks & Stiassny, 2008).
The cichlid fauna
Malagasy cichlids are not a side branch of the family — they sit near its root. Paretroplus, endemic to Madagascar, is the sister genus to Etroplus of southern India and Sri Lanka, and together those two form the subfamily Etroplinae, recovered as the sister group to all remaining cichlids worldwide. That deep split tracks the breakup of Gondwana: the lineage was already isolated on the Indo-Madagascan landmass before the modern continents took shape, which makes these fishes relicts of cichlid evolution rather than recent arrivals (Sparks & Stiassny, 2008; Sparks, 2004). The atlas roster for the ecoregion is built almost entirely from that ancient stock.
Paretroplus — the damba — is the island's most diverse cichlid genus, and Sparks noted that all but one species have ranges restricted to northwestern rivers and lakes. The roster reflects that concentration: Paretroplus dambabe, P. damii, P. gymnopreopercularis, P. maculatus (the spotted damba), P. maromandia, P. menarambo (the pinstripe damba), P. nourissati, P. petiti, and P. tsimoly. These are medium to large, deep-bodied cichlids of floodplain lakes and perennial rivers, several of them substrate feeders that take snails, insect larvae and other invertebrates along with algae and detritus; the heavier-bodied, snail-crushing species develop the jaw musculature for it. Many spawn on the seasonal flood. Their distributions are the conservation problem in miniature — a species like P. menarambo is now effectively confined to one lake, so a single local disturbance can take out an entire range (Sparks, 2002; Sparks & Stiassny, 2008).
The roster's two Ptychochromis — P. inornatus and P. oligacanthus — are the other endemic Malagasy line, slimmer and more generalized than the damba, holding rivers and lakes across the north and northwest. Ptychochromis is the genus made famous by a near-relative, the Mangarahara cichlid (P. insolitus), whose story stands for the whole fauna. Rounding out the roster is Paratilapia polleni, the marakely or Madagascar 'black diamond,' a dark, spangled predator that ranges more widely across the island and feeds on smaller fishes and invertebrates. Alongside the cichlids the ecoregion also carries endemic killifish of the genus Pachypanchax, the atherinid Teramulus — known from only two surviving populations — and undescribed catfish, but it is the cichlids that draw ichthyologists back to these basins, because each new survey tends to turn up another species new to science (FEOW Ecoregion 580; Sparks & Stiassny, 2003).
Conservation
Malagasy cichlids are, by any measure, among the most threatened freshwater fishes on the planet, and the northwest is where most of them live. The pattern that makes them so vulnerable is the one Sparks described: tiny ranges, often a single basin or a single lake, very few of which fall inside protected areas. Layer the island's converging pressures over ranges that small and extinction becomes a matter of one bad decade (Sparks, 2002; FEOW Ecoregion 580).
Those pressures are well documented around the Mahavavy-Kinkony complex and Lac Tseny. Deforestation on the highlands strips cover and sends silt down the rivers, filling in the shallow lakes the damba depend on. Marshes and lakeshore are converted to rice paddy. Native fish are taken with illegal nets faster than they recover. And introduced species — tilapia for fisheries, plus predatory snakeheads — compete with and prey on the endemics in the very lakes that are their last refuge. At Lac Tseny, the 760-hectare lake that holds the only wild population of the pinstripe damba (Paretroplus menarambo), all of those threats stack at once: invasive tilapia and snakehead, overfishing, sedimentation off cleared land, and rice conversion of the shoreline. P. menarambo was once listed as Extinct in the Wild before the Tseny remnant was confirmed, and it remains Critically Endangered; the spotted damba P. maculatus carries the same listing (Conservation Leadership Programme, 2024; Mahavavy-Kinkony complex; IUCN Madagascar freshwater fish assessment, 2004).
The Mangarahara cichlid, Ptychochromis insolitus, is the clearest warning. It lived in the Mangarahara and Amboaboa rivers of the Sofia drainage until dams built to divert water for agriculture, including rice, dried its habitat. By 2013 the species was believed gone in the wild, and London Zoo launched a global appeal having found only a handful of surviving males in aquaria. The appeal worked twice over: a Madagascar hotel owner reported a relict population, and a joint expedition by the Zoological Society of London, Toronto Zoo and the University of Antananarivo located about 18 fish in a degraded pond. Captive breeding followed — first in Toronto, then in Europe through Cologne Zoo and the Citizen Conservation network — and the species survives today only because that ex-situ effort caught it in time (Mongabay, 2013; Citizen Conservation). That is the live question for the rest of the roster: studies of Malagasy fishes in zoos and aquaria have flagged how thin the safety net still is, with ex-situ populations established for only some of the threatened species and many damba represented by tiny, aging captive stocks. For fishes this old and this localized, the aquarium has become part of the wild's last line of defense (Mohan et al., 2022; FEOW Ecoregion 580).
