Setting & origin
Madagascar split from Africa roughly 160 million years ago and from the Indian subcontinent some 88 million years ago, and it has been an island ever since — long enough for an entire continent's worth of life to evolve in isolation. The country is Madagascar, a single sovereign island-nation about 1,000 miles (1,360 mi) long, with no shared transboundary water bodies: its rivers and lakes are wholly its own, which sharpens both the endemism and the conservation stakes. A central highland massif rising above 6,000 feet (about 1,2625 ft) divides the island's drainage. To the east, a narrow, steep escarpment sheds dozens of small, fast, rocky rivers straight into the Indian Ocean through what remains of the eastern rainforest belt. To the west and south, the longer rivers — the Betsiboka, Mahajamba, Tsiribihina, Mangoky, Onilahy and others — wind across broad plains and floodplains to the Mozambique Channel. Punctuating the highlands are shallow lakes such as Lake Alaotra (the island's largest, but only about 6–13 feet / 7–13 ft deep) and Lake Itasy, both volcanic-highland waters that loom large in the cichlid story.
The biogeographic point is the whole point. Madagascar's cichlids are not derived from the African rift radiations; they are a deep, basal branch of the cichlid family tree. In the molecular phylogeny of Sparks and Smith (2004) and the morphological-plus-molecular framework of Stiassny and Sparks, the Malagasy fauna splits between two of the oldest lineages in the family: the Etroplinae — the deep-bodied damba, genus Paretroplus, whose only living relatives are the Etroplus and Pseudetroplus of peninsular India and Sri Lanka — and the Ptychochrominae, the endemic Malagasy genera Ptychochromis, Ptychochromoides, Katria, Oxylapia and Paratilapia. The Indo-Malagasy pairing is a textbook Gondwanan vicariance signal: the two genera were left stranded on opposite sides of the widening Indian Ocean as the supercontinent broke apart, and they have been diverging ever since. That makes these unassuming fish disproportionately important — they sit near the root of the entire cichlid radiation.
Temperature & waters
There is no single 'Madagascar water' the way there is a single Lake Malawi water column, so honesty about the spread matters more than a tidy number. Madagascar straddles the Tropic of Capricorn, and its inland waters are warm year-round, with surface temperatures broadly in the range of roughly 68–86 °F (about 68–86 °F) depending on altitude, latitude and season. Lowland western and coastal rivers and the shallow highland lakes run at the warm end; the eastern rainforest streams and the higher-altitude headwaters above 3,000–5,000 feet (about 900–1,1640 ft) run cooler. None of these waters is deep enough to stratify the way a rift lake does — even Lake Alaotra, the largest, averages only a couple of meters deep, so it mixes freely and carries oxygen top to bottom rather than sealing off an anoxic abyss. There is, in short, no meaningful 'deep-water' temperature to report for the island as a whole.
The habitats themselves span an enormous physical range, which is part of why a small fauna could partition itself: cool, swift, boulder-strewn rainforest torrents full of rapids and cascades in the east; warm, turbid, slow-moving floodplain rivers and oxbows in the west; and shallow, productive, weed-fringed highland lakes in the middle. Pan-island chemistry and temperature data are genuinely thin and patchy — much of what exists comes from individual lake or river studies rather than any coordinated limnological survey — so the figures here should be read as broad envelopes, not the precisely characterized water column of a single great lake.
Water chemistry & clarity
Water chemistry varies strongly by region, and the cleanest signal in the literature is the east–west contrast. The eastern rainforest rivers, draining ancient crystalline rock under 100–120 inches (2,500–3,0.5 in) of annual rain, tend to be slightly acidic, soft, well-oxygenated and stained by forest tannins; the western and highland drainages run nearer neutral to mildly alkaline, with somewhat different ionic loads and lower dissolved oxygen in their sluggish lower reaches (Freshwater Ecoregions of the World). Across the island these are broadly soft to moderately mineralized fresh waters — there is no equivalent of Tanganyika's high-conductivity, strongly buffered chemistry here.
Clarity is where the modern story darkens. Many Malagasy waters were historically clear or tea-colored, but catchment deforestation has turned a great deal of the island's runoff blood-red with eroded laterite soil. Madagascar's rivers are infamous for carrying some of the highest sediment loads on Earth — satellite images show plumes of red silt staining the sea around the river mouths. Lakes have suffered in step: Lake Alaotra and its surrounding marshes are silting and shrinking as eroded sediment chokes inflowing streams and fills the floodplains. Because there is no coordinated, lake-by-lake water-quality monitoring across the island, Secchi transparency and nutrient figures are reported only sporadically and are not summarized here as a single value — but the trend, almost everywhere humans have cleared the watershed, is toward more turbidity, not less.
Habitats
The Malagasy cichlids divide along the same physical lines that divide the island. The eastern rainforest streams — small, rocky, swift, oxygen-rich and cool — are the realm of rheophilic specialists: Oxylapia polli, a slender, current-loving micro-endemic known from a single stretch of the Marolambo rapids on the Nosivolo River, and rheophilic Ptychochromis and Ptychochromoides clinging to rocky riffles. The western and northwestern floodplain rivers and their connected lakes — warm, turbid, slow — are the heartland of the deep-bodied lacustrine damba (Paretroplus), which graze, sift and crush snails over soft bottoms and among submerged wood and vegetation. The shallow highland lakes, Alaotra and Itasy chief among them, once held their own endemic cichlids before introduced species and siltation overran them.
Paratilapia, the marakely, is the great generalist — the most widespread Malagasy cichlid, found in rivers, streams, lakes and floodplain pools across much of the island, from clear highland water to turbid lowland rivers. That breadth is exactly why it has survived where narrower-niched relatives have not: most Malagasy cichlids are tied to a single drainage or even a single river reach, and narrow endemism layered on top of widespread habitat degradation is a dangerous combination.
The cichlids
This is the story. Madagascar's freshwater fish fauna includes on the order of 37 cichlid species, of which about 29 are endemic — found on this island and nowhere else — across just five or six genera (review of threatened Malagasy freshwater fishes, 2022). It is a small fauna by African-lake standards, but its scientific weight is out of all proportion to its size, because these are not derived modern haplochromines. They are living relicts of the cichlid family's deepest history.
The damba — genus Paretroplus — are the headline radiation: deep-bodied, often strikingly patterned lake and floodplain fish, with the taxonomic revision of the subfamily recognizing around a dozen species and continued descriptions pushing the recognized total toward fourteen. Paretroplus is endemic to Madagascar and is the sister genus to Etroplus and Pseudetroplus of India and Sri Lanka; together they form the subfamily Etroplinae, which in the Sparks and Smith phylogeny is recovered as the sister group to all the remaining cichlids on Earth — a single transoceanic Gondwanan lineage standing at the base of the family. The rest of the Malagasy fauna belongs to the Ptychochrominae: Paratilapia, the velvet-black, star-speckled marakely (the 'Black Diamond' or 'Starry Night' cichlid of aquarists, called marakely — 'black fish' — and many other names across Madagascar); the river and lake genera Ptychochromis and Ptychochromoides; the monotypic rheophile Oxylapia polli; and Katria, split out from Ptychochromis. Phylogenetically, this handful of genera does for the cichlid family roughly what the tuatara does for reptiles or the coelacanth for lobe-finned fishes — it preserves a branch that diverged before the great African and South American radiations even began.
People & pressures
The Malagasy cichlids are in crisis, and the numbers are stark. The IUCN's regional assessment of Madagascar and the Indian Ocean islands found freshwater fishes to be among the most threatened groups in one of the world's most threatened biotas, and the great majority of the island's endemic cichlids carry threatened Red List status — Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered. A 2022 review counted roughly 50 threatened endemic Malagasy freshwater fish species, the bulk of them cichlids, with many ranked Critically Endangered and several already lost. Ptychochromoides onilahy is treated as Extinct; Ptychochromoides itasy — the Itasy cichlid, named for Lake Itasy — has been extirpated from its namesake lake and now clings on only in the Tsiribihina drainage, listed Critically Endangered; Paretroplus menarambo, the pinstripe damba, vanished from the wild before being clawed back through captive breeding; and species such as Paretroplus dambabe and Paretroplus maculatus are likewise Critically Endangered.
Three forces drive the decline, and they compound. First, deforestation and the catastrophic erosion that follows it: as the highland and eastern forests are cleared for rice, cattle and charcoal, laterite soil washes into the rivers, silting spawning habitat and filling lakes like Alaotra. Second, introduced fishes: tilapias (Oreochromis and others) stocked for food, the Asian snakehead Channa maculata introduced around 1978, largemouth bass, mosquitofish (Gambusia) and others now compete with, prey upon, and eat the eggs and young of the native cichlids, which evolved with no such pressures. Third, overfishing of a subsistence resource a growing rural population depends on. Reinthal and Stiassny called the freshwater fishes of Madagascar 'a threatened resource' and an 'endangered fauna' back in 1991, and called for coordinated ichthyological, limnological and fisheries research to save it; a generation later, ex situ programs in zoos and aquaria hold only a handful of these species, leaving most of the island's irreplaceable, deep-branching cichlid lineages exposed in the wild. They are, by many measures, the most threatened cichlids on Earth.
