Marcusenius cuangoanus is a small, weakly electric mormyrid — a member of one of the oldest living branches of the bony fishes, the bonytongues (order Osteoglossiformes) — found only in the Kwango (Cuango) River system of the middle Congo basin in Angola. It was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967 from a tributary near the village of Zovo, and belongs to Marcusenius, one of the largest mormyrid genera in Africa, whose many similar-looking species are more reliably told apart by their distinctive pulsed electric-organ discharge than by colour or shape. Reaching barely 11.4 cm, it is a modest fish by any measure, but like its mormyrid relatives it carries a strikingly large brain-to-body ratio and reads its dark, sediment-laden home river by electrolocation rather than sight. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable, its entire known range confined to a stretch of river increasingly clouded by sedimentation from mining.

Taxonomy & naming

Marcusenius cuangoanus was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967, with the type locality given as Zovo, on the Uamba River, a tributary of the Cuango (Kwango) River in Angola. It sits in the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the most ancient surviving lineages of teleost fish, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth. The genus Marcusenius is itself one of the largest mormyrid genera in Africa, holding several dozen species scattered across river systems from West Africa to the Zambezi, many of which look almost identical and are confidently distinguished only by their species-specific electric-organ discharge (EOD).

The parenthetical authority "(Poll, 1967)" signals that the species has been reassigned from its original combination at some point since description, a common history among mormyrids as the group's taxonomy has been repeatedly revised. Hobby literature on the genus recommends a tank of at least 39.4 in in length, soft and dim rather than brightly lit water with plenty of cover (roots, driftwood, leaf litter), and — importantly — keeping fish in a group rather than alone, since solitary mormyrids in cramped quarters can become stressed or aggressive toward the only other fish they can "see" electrically.

Mormyrids as a family have a reputation for sensitivity: they generally do poorly with sudden water-quality swings, are intolerant of nitrogenous waste, and are commonly reported to react badly to some medications, so any treatment should be approached conservatively and only when necessary. The principal documented threat is sedimentation linked to mining activity in the catchment, which degrades the river-bottom habitat this demersal species depends on. There is no CITES listing for M. cuangoanus.
