Marcusenius friteli is a small, weakly electric fish of the middle Congo River basin, and like every member of its order it belongs to one of the oldest living lineages of bony fish: the Osteoglossiformes, or bonytongues, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against toothed plates on the roof — a body plan whose living representatives are scattered, in deep time, across South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia. Described in 1904 as Gnathonemus friteli and later reassigned to the genus Marcusenius, it is one of dozens of small mormyrids — the elephantnose family — that generate a weak, pulsed electric field from an organ in the tail and read the distortions it produces to find their way and their food through the dim, tannin-stained water of Congo basin streams. At a modest maximum of about 13.5 cm, it is far smaller than the trunk-nosed elephantnose of the aquarium trade, and far less is known about it: no aquarium care, water-chemistry or breeding data has been published for this species specifically, so this account leans on the well-established pattern shared by its mormyrid relatives. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern, a common fish of the middle Congo with no recorded threats.

Taxonomy & naming

Marcusenius friteli was described in 1904 by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin, originally under the name Gnathonemus friteli, from the Alima River at Diélé in the Congo basin — the species' type locality. It was later transferred to the genus Marcusenius, one of the largest genera of mormyrids, and modern authorities including FishBase list it as Marcusenius friteli (Pellegrin, 1904), the parentheses signalling that change of genus from the original description. It belongs to the family Mormyridae within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — among the most ancient surviving lineages of teleost (bony ray-finned) fish, a name earned by a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth (the basihyal) that bites against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth. Bonytongues are not one tidy group but a scattered, deep-time radiation found today on four continents — arowanas and arapaima in South America, elephantnoses and featherback knifefishes in Africa, the Asian arowana in Southeast Asia, and saratoga in Australasia — and M. friteli represents the African, weakly electric branch of that ancient tree.

The species epithet honours Paul-Honoré Fritel (1867–1927), a French paleo-biologist and scientific illustrator associated with the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris, the institution where Pellegrin worked; the '-i' ending is the standard Latin patronymic marking 'belonging to Fritel'. The genus name Marcusenius, erected earlier in the nineteenth century, is usually explained as honouring the naturalist Marcus Eliezer Bloch, whose name underlies several early ichthyological genera, though the etymology is not spelled out in the original description.

Like most small Congolese mormyrids, Marcusenius friteli is difficult to distinguish from its many congeners by eye alone — dozens of Marcusenius species share a similar compressed, silvery body and small mouth, and ichthyologists increasingly rely on the shape of the species-specific electric organ discharge (EOD), alongside fin-ray counts and body proportions, to separate look-alike species with confidence. Any external identification of a small Marcusenius in the trade should be treated as provisional.

Morphology

Marcusenius friteli has the classic mormyrid silhouette: a body that is laterally compressed and deepest at midlength, tapering to a narrow caudal peduncle and a deeply forked tail, with a small, unremarkable mouth set low on the head. Unlike Gnathonemus petersii, the trunk-nosed elephantnose familiar from the aquarium trade, this species and most of its Marcusenius relatives lack an elongated chin appendage (the schnauzenorgan); the snout is short and blunt. The dorsal and anal fins sit far back on the body, close to the tail, a mormyrid hallmark that leaves most of the trunk finless and gives the fish a distinctive rear-weighted profile.

FishBase records a maximum length of about 5.3 in total length, making M. friteli one of the smaller mormyrids rather than a large species — well under the size reached by the popular elephantnose. As in all mormyrids, an electric organ sits in the caudal peduncle just ahead of the tail; it generates a weak, species-specific pulse (the electric organ discharge, or EOD) that the fish uses to build a continuous electrical picture of its surroundings in dark or turbid water, and to signal to other mormyrids. Supporting that sense is a disproportionately large brain: mormyrids as a family have among the highest brain-to-body-mass ratios of any fish, driven mainly by a greatly enlarged cerebellum dedicated to processing the constant stream of electrosensory information — a genuine 'thinking fish' by vertebrate standards, even in a species as modest-looking as this one.

Habitat

Marcusenius friteli is known from the middle reaches of the Congo River basin, spanning the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo; its type locality is the Alima River at Diélé, within that middle-Congo drainage. FishBase records it as a demersal freshwater fish, living and feeding near the bottom rather than in open water.

No detailed habitat study has been published for this species, but the middle Congo basin it inhabits is broadly characterised by slow, meandering channels, flooded forest margins and backwaters stained dark amber-brown by dissolved tannins from decaying leaf litter — exactly the low-visibility conditions in which a weakly electric sense is most useful, since sight alone offers little help in finding food or avoiding obstacles after dark. Related Congo basin Marcusenius species fit this general picture: demersal fish of soft, warm, tannin-stained water rather than clear, mineral-rich habitats, though species-specific measurements for M. friteli itself are not available.

Feeding

Specific dietary data for Marcusenius friteli has not been published, but the pattern is consistent across the mormyrid family and its close relatives: these are carnivorous, bottom-foraging fish that pick small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, tiny crustaceans — out of sediment and leaf litter, mostly at night or in low light, leaning on their electric sense as much as on sight to locate prey hidden from view.

In the aquarium, mormyrids of this size are typically offered sinking, meaty foods — frozen or live bloodworm, blackworm and brine shrimp, plus sinking carnivore pellets once a fish is settled and feeding confidently — given after the lights dim, since most are crepuscular or nocturnal feeders. No aquarium feeding record specific to M. friteli exists in the sources reviewed here, so this should be treated as a reasonable extrapolation from the genus rather than a tested protocol for this exact species.

Mating

Mating behaviour has not been documented for Marcusenius friteli specifically, and detailed courtship accounts remain sparse across the mormyrid family as a whole. What is well established is the general mechanism: the electric organ discharge that mormyrids use to navigate also carries a species-specific waveform, and in many mormyrids that signal doubles as a courtship and species-recognition cue, letting fish identify and assess potential mates — and rivals — by their electrical 'voice' as much as by sight.

Wild mormyrids in African river systems are generally understood to be seasonal spawners, with breeding activity tied to the rains and to the rise and flooding of river channels, which opens up new feeding and spawning habitat. Beyond that broad pattern, the courtship sequence, pairing behaviour and spawning site of M. friteli remain unrecorded; this is a poorly studied species even by the standards of a poorly studied family.

Breeding

Marcusenius friteli has not been bred in captivity as far as the sources reviewed here record, and it should not be assumed to be an aquarium-breedable fish. This is true of the great majority of mormyrids: despite decades in the aquarium trade, captive reproduction is rare and the wild breeding biology of most species — this one included — is barely documented.

In the handful of mormyrids where breeding has been observed, either in the wild or in very large systems, eggs are typically scattered or deposited among plants and other cover rather than mouthbrooded or guarded in a nest, and some species are thought to offer a degree of egg-guarding — but the details vary by species and have not been confirmed for M. friteli. Anyone attempting to breed this species should treat it as experimental, working from a large, soft, dimly lit, well-conditioned setup rather than any established protocol.

In the aquarium

There is no published aquarium-keeping record specific to Marcusenius friteli, so care here follows the well-established pattern for small Congo basin mormyrids generally. Provide soft, weakly acidic to neutral water, kept warm, and — ideally — dimly lit, with driftwood, leaf litter or a light tannin tint standing in for the shaded, sediment-laden water of its home rivers; mormyrids are markedly more settled, and more willing to feed and show themselves, in a dim, structured tank than under bright open water.

Mormyrids as a group are notably sensitive fish: their scales are small and easily damaged, they are unusually intolerant of poor water quality, and they react badly to many common medications, especially anything copper-based — stable, well-filtered, mature water matters more for this family than for most community fish. They can also be territorial or outright aggressive toward their own kind and toward other electric fish sharing a tank, so keeping more than one individual, or mixing species that generate overlapping electric fields, needs care and space; a single specimen in a quiet, well-planted, softwater setup is often the safer choice for a fish this poorly documented.

At a maximum of roughly 5.3 in, M. friteli is a modestly sized fish and not a size-trap species in the way the giant arowanas or arapaima are — but because so little is published about its temperament and requirements, it is best suited to an experienced keeper prepared to observe and adjust rather than follow a settled care sheet.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Marcusenius friteli as Least Concern on 16 February 2009. It is described as a common fish across the middle Congo River basin in both the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with no major threats recorded against the wild population.

Its Least Concern status reflects a genuinely widespread and secure distribution rather than a lack of scrutiny of the wider basin: the Congo River system faces long-term pressures from deforestation, damming and artisanal fishing in places, but nothing specific to M. friteli or its habitat has been flagged as a conservation concern to date.
