Taxonomy & naming
The fish was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1924 as Mormyrus intermedius, and has since been reassigned to the genus Marcusenius, where it is currently recognised as Marcusenius intermedius. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the most ancient living lineages of ray-finned fishes and a group that radiated separately on four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) over tens of millions of years. Mormyridae is by far the largest bonytongue family, with over 200 described species, almost all of them restricted to Africa's rivers and lakes; Marcusenius alone holds roughly 45 of them, many — like this species — poorly studied outside a handful of museum specimens.
The epithet intermedius is Latin for "between" or "in the middle" (inter, between + medius, middle), a name taxonomists commonly reach for when a new species sits morphologically between two already-described relatives rather than standing clearly apart from either. Because identification within Marcusenius often rests on fine meristic detail and, in life, on the shape of the species-specific electric-organ discharge rather than obvious external colour pattern, several members of the genus — this one included — are difficult to place with confidence from preserved material alone.
Morphology
Marcusenius intermedius has the generalised mormyrid body plan: laterally compressed, deep through the shoulders and tapering to a slender caudal peduncle ahead of a small, deeply forked tail, with a small, toothless-looking mouth set low or terminally on a rounded head. Unlike its famous relative Gnathonemus petersii, it does not carry a long, mobile trunk-like chin appendage (the schnauzenorgan) — most Marcusenius species have only a modestly shaped snout, not a pronounced trunk, though the underlying sensory biology is the same family trait. FishBase reports a maximum length of roughly 5.4 in, making this one of the smaller mormyrids, well within reach of a modest aquarium — though maturity size and growth data for wild populations remain unrecorded.
The defining feature of the family sits at the base of the tail: an electric organ, derived from modified muscle tissue, that generates a weak, species-specific pulse-type electric-organ discharge (EOD). The fish reads the distortions this field makes around nearby objects and other fish — a sense called electrolocation — allowing it to navigate and hunt in the pitch darkness of turbid, tannin-stained Congo basin water where eyesight is nearly useless. To process that constant stream of electrosensory information, mormyrids carry an enlarged cerebellum and one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, rivalling those of some birds and mammals — a genuine "thinking fish" built around a sense humans do not share.
Habitat
This species is a Congo basin endemic, recorded from the Kasai, Lukenie, Itimbiri and Ruki rivers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — a network of slow, forest-shaded tributaries and floodplain channels typical of the central Congo drainage. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, demersal (bottom-associated) tropical species, consistent with a fish that spends its time close to the substrate, sounding out cover and prey with its electric field rather than relying on vision in the dim, often sediment- or tannin-stained water of these rivers.
Detailed water-chemistry records for the species itself are not available — a common gap for a Data Deficient, narrow-range mormyrid known mainly from museum collections. Broadly, Congo basin blackwater and floodplain habitats of this kind run warm, soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral, the low-visibility conditions that likely favoured the evolution of electrolocation in this family in the first place; precise figures for M. intermedius specifically are simply not documented in the literature.
Feeding
Like other mormyrids, Marcusenius intermedius is presumed to be a benthic invertebrate feeder, using its electric sense to detect the faint bioelectric and mechanical signatures of prey buried in sand, mud or leaf litter — chiefly aquatic insect larvae (chironomid "bloodworm" and similar), small crustaceans and worms. Foraging in mormyrids is typically concentrated after dark, when the fish's electrosensory advantage over sight-hunting predators and competitors is greatest.
No species-specific feeding studies exist for M. intermedius, but its close relatives in the genus and family are consistently reported as micro-invertebrate specialists rather than generalist omnivores, and captive mormyrids of similar size are fed accordingly — sinking frozen bloodworm, blackworm, and small live or frozen invertebrate foods offered at or after lights-out.
Mating
Courtship and mate recognition in mormyrids run through the same channel as their navigation sense: the electric-organ discharge. Each species, and often each sex, produces a subtly different EOD waveform, and mormyrids are thought to use these differences to recognise potential mates and rivals of their own kind in murky water where visual cues are limited. Beyond that general pattern, nothing specific to Marcusenius intermedius has been documented.
Across the family, spawning is understood to be seasonal and tied to the rains — triggered by rising, flood-stage water levels that open up newly inundated vegetation and floodplain as spawning and nursery habitat, a pattern typical of many Congo and West African river fishes. Details of pair formation, courtship displays and site selection in this particular species are simply unrecorded.
Breeding
Mormyrids as a group are essentially not bred in captivity, and Marcusenius intermedius is no exception — there are no established aquarium breeding reports for this species, and the biology of its reproduction is poorly understood even in the wild. What little is known about the family points to flood-triggered, seasonal spawning rather than the readily repeatable egg-scatter or mouthbrooding strategies keepers rely on for many other African fish.
Parental care in mormyrids is likewise barely documented; some species are thought to scatter eggs among flooded vegetation with no further care, while a few reports suggest limited guarding behaviour in certain genera, but nothing specific has been recorded for this species. Anyone keeping M. intermedius should treat it as effectively unbred in captivity rather than expect to replicate a known protocol.
In the aquarium
Marcusenius intermedius is essentially unknown in the hobby — a Data Deficient, single-basin endemic with no meaningful trade history — so any care guidance has to be extrapolated from the wider Marcusenius and Mormyridae care experience rather than from direct reports on this species. That experience is consistent: mormyrids want soft, warm, dimly lit water with plenty of cover (roots, driftwood, leaf litter) to hide in by day, since they are electrosensory, largely nocturnal fish that do poorly under bright, bare conditions. General guidance for the genus calls for a tank of at least 39.4 in and, importantly, company of its own kind — mormyrids kept alone or in pairs are prone to bullying a single tankmate of the same species, so a proper group (or a lone individual with no conspecifics at all) tends to work better than two or three.
Two further points carry across the whole family and apply here by extension. First, mormyrids are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to many medications — copper-based treatments in particular should be avoided, and any dosing should be conservative. Second, because they navigate and communicate electrically, mormyrids are best kept without other strongly electrogenic fish nearby and without excessive competing electrical interference in the tank, and they generally do not compete well against fast, boisterous community fish for food. At a reported maximum of only around 5.4 in, this is a modest-sized mormyrid rather than one of the size-trap giants of the family, but its specialised sensory needs make it a fish for a dedicated, low-light, soft-water setup rather than a casual community addition.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List classifies Marcusenius intermedius as Data Deficient, an assessment made in February 2009 that has not been updated since. FishBase notes it as a harmless species (no danger to humans) with low inherent vulnerability to fishing pressure, and records that its maturity size and other basic life-history parameters remain unknown — a fair summary of how little targeted research this narrow Congo basin endemic has received.
Data Deficient is not the same as threatened: it reflects an absence of adequate population, distribution and trend data rather than evidence of decline. Even so, a fish restricted to a handful of Congo basin tributaries in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is inherently exposed to whatever pressures affect that river system — deforestation, sedimentation and artisanal fishing pressure across the basin are broad regional concerns — but no species-specific threat assessment exists to confirm or quantify any of that for M. intermedius specifically.
