Marcusenius ghesquierei is a small, weakly electric mormyrid from the Congo River basin, a Central African representative of one of the most ancient living lineages of teleost fish — the bonytongues (order Osteoglossiformes), named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a matching toothed plate on the roof of the mouth. Like its relatives in the family Mormyridae, it produces a species-specific pulse of electricity from an organ in its tail, using the resulting field to read its dim, tannin-stained Congo basin habitat and to communicate with other elephantnoses in the dark — a sensory system unrelated to, though famously convergent with, that of the South American electric knifefishes. Described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1945 from the Ruki River drainage of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it remains a modest-sized, poorly studied, single-basin endemic: currently assessed as globally secure, but essentially never bred in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Marcusenius ghesquierei was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1945, placing it in the mormyrid genus Marcusenius, one of the largest and most species-rich genera within the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids of tropical Africa. Mormyridae in turn belongs to the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, among the oldest surviving lineages of bony fish; the order takes its name from a toothed bony structure on the floor of the mouth that bites against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth, an ancient jaw arrangement shared, in radically different bodies, by the South American arowanas, the African butterflyfish, and the featherback knifefishes of Africa and Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Marcusenius ghesquierei as a valid species.

The genus name Marcusenius is a Latinized patronym, generally understood to honor the naturalist J. Marcusen and commemorated by the American ichthyologist Theodore Gill when he erected the genus in 1862. The species epithet ghesquierei is likewise a patronym, honoring a Ghesquière associated with natural-history collecting in the Belgian Congo of that era — a common pattern for Congo basin species described from museum material gathered during colonial-period expeditions; further biographical detail on the person is not well documented in the sources available here. Morphology

Marcusenius ghesquierei is a small mormyrid, reported to reach only about 4.3 in in length — modest even by the standards of its speciose genus, and well within reach of a modestly sized aquarium. Like other members of Mormyridae it has an elongate, laterally compressed body, a small, somewhat underslung mouth, and a caudal peduncle that narrows sharply into a small, forked tail — the fin arrangement behind the group's characteristic slow, hovering swimming style, in which the fish sculls forward and backward with its long dorsal and anal fins while the body stays relatively rigid. Colouration is unremarkable for the family: a fairly plain silvery-grey to brownish fish without bold markings, in keeping with a lifestyle built around a non-visual sense.

The diagnostic mormyrid feature is internal rather than external: an electric organ in the caudal peduncle, derived from modified muscle tissue, fires a weak, species-specific pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD). The fish reads the resulting electric field with an array of skin electroreceptors, an ability called electrolocation, used to navigate and to find food in dark or turbid water. Mormyrids as a group are also known for an unusually enlarged cerebellum and one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, an adaptation for processing this stream of electrosensory information in real time. Whether that holds precisely for M. ghesquierei has not been separately measured, but it is a defining trait of the family it belongs to.

Habitat

The species is documented from the Ruki River drainage in the middle Congo River basin, within the Democratic Republic of the Congo — a demersal, bottom-associated fish of tropical freshwater. The Ruki is a major blackwater tributary of the Congo, and like much of the central Congo basin it runs slow and warm, heavily stained by tannins leached from the surrounding swamp forest, producing the dim, low-visibility water in which an electric sense is such a useful adaptation.

Detailed water-chemistry data specific to M. ghesquierei's home waters are not documented in the sources reviewed here; the surrounding Congo basin blackwater habitats are typically soft and acidic to neutral, warm year-round, and heavily shaded by forest canopy and floating or marginal vegetation. In the aquarium, Marcusenius species take live and frozen foods readily: mosquito larvae, bloodworm, whiteworm, blackworm, Daphnia, Tubifex and Cyclops are all reported to be accepted. Live or frozen foods are generally far more reliably taken than dry foods by small mormyrids, and feeding is best offered after the lights go down, matching the fish's naturally dim, crepuscular-to-nocturnal habits.

Mating

Mating in mormyrids is bound up with their electric sense: the pulse-type EOD each species produces is thought to function not only in electrolocation but in courtship and species recognition, letting fish identify potential mates of the correct species amid a crowded, low-visibility river. Beyond that general pattern, the courtship behaviour of Marcusenius ghesquierei specifically has not been documented — like most small Congo basin mormyrids, its reproductive biology in the wild remains essentially unstudied.

Congo basin mormyrids more broadly are believed to be seasonal spawners, with reproduction cued to the rise and fall of the seasonal flood pulse that governs so much of Central African river life; spawning is presumed to coincide with rising water and the associated flush of food and cover. None of this has been confirmed specifically for M. ghesquierei, and it should be read as a reasonable inference from the wider family rather than a documented fact for this species.

Breeding

Marcusenius ghesquierei has essentially never been bred in captivity, and this is true of the great majority of mormyrids kept in the hobby. Aquarists should not expect to breed M. ghesquierei intentionally. No reliable spawning method exists in the literature, external sexing of the species is not established, and captive reproduction — if it has ever occurred — has not been reported in a way that has entered the record. This is a fish to keep and appreciate for its natural history and its electrosense, not one to plan a breeding project around.

In the aquarium

Marcusenius ghesquierei is a small mormyrid — modest enough, at under 4.3 in, to avoid the size trap that catches keepers of the family's larger elephantnoses — but it still needs the care the whole group demands. General guidance for Marcusenius species calls for a minimum tank around 39.4 in, dimly lit, with ample hiding places such as driftwood, root tangles, and plants, over a soft substrate the fish can probe without injuring its sensitive skin and electroreceptors.

Mormyrids as a group are notably sensitive to poor or fluctuating water quality and to many standard fish medications, so stable, clean water with minimal turbidity and conservative, careful dosing of any treatment are essential — this fish does not tolerate the margin for error a hardier community species would. It should not be kept alone; a small group, or at minimum a pair, fares far better than a singleton, which is prone to stress and can become withdrawn. Tankmates should be peaceful and unlikely to harass this fish's fins or its electroreceptor-covered head and chin. Given its modest size, it is a realistic prospect for a well-set-up species or quiet community tank, unlike the true size-trap oddballs of this order.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Marcusenius ghesquierei as Least Concern, an assessment carried out in 2009. As a narrow-range endemic of the Ruki River drainage in the middle Congo basin, its known global range is naturally limited, but nothing in the assessment or the wider literature reviewed here flags a specific ongoing threat driving decline.

That said, a Least Concern rating for a single-basin, poorly studied fish like this one reflects an absence of documented threats more than a thorough, dedicated population assessment. The central Congo basin faces long-term pressures from deforestation, artisanal fishing, and development that could affect this and many similarly obscure, data-poor mormyrids without yet showing up in a formal reassessment. It is not a species to worry about acutely, but its status should not be assumed settled indefinitely either.
