Taxonomy & naming
Marcusenius kainjii was described by Lewis in 1974, with its type locality at Lake Kainji on the Niger River in Nigeria. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues: a scattered, deep-time radiation of fishes found on four continents — South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia — united not by any shared modern habitat but by that toothed lingual bone, and numbered among the most ancient lineages of living teleosts. The Mormyridae are an exclusively African family, every member weakly electric, and entirely convergent with — not related to — the electric knifefishes of South America (order Gymnotiformes), which evolved an equivalent electric sense independently on the opposite side of the Atlantic. The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) records Marcusenius kainjii Lewis, 1974 as a currently valid taxonomic name.
The genus Marcusenius was erected by the American ichthyologist Theodore Gill in 1862 and is thought to honour a naturalist named Marcusen; as with several mormyrid genus names built from personal names, the exact biographical record has not survived clearly in accessible sources, so this article does not press the point further. The species epithet kainjii is a Latinised place name referring to Lake Kainji itself, the reservoir where the type specimens were taken. As in many mormyrids, species-level identification in this genus is difficult from preserved museum specimens alone, since so much of what separates closely related Marcusenius rests on the electric organ discharge (EOD) rather than on visible anatomy — a problem compounded here by how seldom M. kainjii has been collected at all.
Morphology
Marcusenius kainjii shows the general mormyrid build: a laterally compressed body, a small, close-set mouth, and a caudal peduncle housing the tail-mounted electric organ that defines the family. FishBase records a maximum size of about 11.8 in total length, placing it among the larger Marcusenius species rather than the handful of diminutive West African mormyrids sold as "baby whales."
Detailed published description of colouration and fin proportion for this species is thin in the sources available here — it is simply too rarely collected to have generated a well-illustrated account — and, as with other mormyrids, visual identification among related Marcusenius species is notoriously unreliable in any case; confident species-level identification in the field typically relies on the fish's electric organ discharge rather than on external appearance. As in other mormyrids, an outsized cerebellum drives one of the highest brain-to-body ratios recorded in any vertebrate, the physiological cost of running a sensitive electrolocation and communication system built around that tail organ.
Habitat
Marcusenius kainjii is known only from Lake Kainji, the large reservoir impounded on the Niger River in Nigeria after the Kainji Dam was completed in 1968, and by extension the lower Niger River system of West Africa. FishBase records the species as demersal and freshwater, and notes that it is very rare, taken only occasionally along the lake's shoreline — the profile of a narrow-range, poorly collected endemic rather than a wide-ranging river fish.
Species-specific water-chemistry data for M. kainjii were not available in the sources consulted here; the water is presumed to follow the warm, generally soft-to-moderate, slightly acidic to neutral tropical West African river and reservoir conditions typical of the family, often stained by tannins from flooded vegetation and dim enough that electrolocation, not eyesight, does most of the sensory work. As a very rare, single-locality endemic that has essentially never entered scientific study beyond its original 1974 description, M. kainjii's courtship behaviour is unrecorded; what can be said here follows only from the general pattern seen across Mormyridae, not from any observation of this species itself.
Breeding
Breeding in Mormyridae as a family is poorly understood and only rarely achieved in captivity even for common trade species; for Marcusenius kainjii specifically there is no published or hobbyist breeding record at all. Marcusenius kainjii is, by every available account, rarely if ever seen in the aquarium trade — its entire known range is a single Nigerian reservoir, and FishBase records it as very rare even there. Almost nothing written about its husbandry is species-specific; what follows is general Marcusenius/elephantnose care, offered with the caveat that it has not been tested against this particular fish.
Elephantnoses and mormyrids as a group need a long tank — a minimum of around 39.4 in — dim lighting, soft substrate and ample cover, and, critically, company: no Marcusenius should be kept solitary, since isolated individuals are prone to stress and to directing aggression at unrelated tankmates instead. Mormyrids are notoriously sensitive to poor water quality and to many medications, and, being effectively scaleless-skinned, electrosensitive fish, they should never be treated with copper-based products; stable, well-filtered, warm, soft-to-moderate water is standard practice for the genus. A tight-fitting lid is sound practice for any mormyrid, as for most Osteoglossiformes.
Given how rarely this exact species reaches keepers, anyone offered one should treat it as an opportunity for careful, conservative husbandry rather than assume standard elephantnose care will automatically translate — and should bear in mind that the wild population is small and localised enough that collection pressure is a real consideration.
Conservation
Marcusenius kainjii has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and its status is Not Evaluated. FishBase notes it has no commercial fisheries interest, consistent with a species too rare and too narrowly distributed to support any exploitation.
Its entire known range is Lake Kainji and the surrounding lower Niger River in Nigeria, making it, on present knowledge, effectively a single-reservoir endemic. That narrow range is itself a conservation-relevant fact even in the absence of a formal assessment: changes in reservoir management, water quality, or the Niger's flow regime at Kainji could disproportionately affect a fish found nowhere else. With no population-trend data, no formal assessment and very little research effort directed at the species, the honest summary is that its status is essentially unknown rather than reassuring.
