Taxonomy & naming
Marcusenius macrolepidotus was described by the German naturalist and explorer Wilhelm Peters in 1852, from material he collected during his extensive survey of Mozambique in the 1840s. It sits in the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues: one of the most ancient surviving lineages of ray-finned fish, its name referring to a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a matching toothed pad on the roof. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Marcusenius macrolepidotus as the valid name for the nominate form; a subspecies-level record (M. m. macrolepidotus) is also recognised in some nomenclatural sources.
The genus Marcusenius is a large, mostly sub-Saharan African group whose species are notoriously difficult to separate by eye and are more reliably distinguished, where studied, by the waveform of their electric-organ discharge (EOD) rather than external appearance. The species epithet macrolepidotus is built from the Greek makros, "large", and lepidotos, "scaled" — "large-scaled" — a reference to the conspicuously large scales along this species' flanks and lateral line, which help distinguish it from smaller-scaled Marcusenius congeners. Unlike many of its relatives, which are narrow single-river endemics, M. macrolepidotus is one of the more broadly distributed members of the genus, recorded across several separate African river systems rather than confined to one.
Morphology
Like other mormyrids, Marcusenius macrolepidotus has a laterally compressed, elongated body, a small, low-set mouth suited to picking invertebrates from the substrate, and a long-based dorsal fin set opposite a similarly elongated anal fin, with a deeply forked tail. Its most distinctive external feature, reflected in the species name, is a covering of unusually large scales along the flanks and lateral line — visibly coarser than the finer scaling of many congeners, and often the easiest external cue for separating this species from similar-looking Marcusenius in the field.
At the base of the tail sits the electric organ, a modified muscle mass that fires the fish's signature pulse-type discharge many times a second. As in other mormyrids, the brain of M. macrolepidotus is disproportionately large for a fish of its size, with an oversized, richly folded cerebellum dedicated to processing the constant stream of electrosensory information — the physical basis for the family's reputation as unusually intelligent, "thinking" fish.
FishBase records a maximum length of about 12.6 in total length, a solidly built, moderately large mormyrid rather than a nano-tank fish. Colouration is a plain silvery-grey to olive-brown typical of the genus, with darker fin margins — understated camouflage suited to the murky, sediment-laden water it inhabits rather than a fish kept for bold pattern.
Habitat
Marcusenius macrolepidotus is one of the more widely distributed members of its genus, recorded across a broad swath of south-eastern and central Africa: the lower Zambezi River system from the delta up to around Victoria Falls, the Shire River, the Congo basin, the Lake Rukwa basin in Tanzania, east-flowing rivers of Tanzania and the Natal region of South Africa, and the Cunene and Okavango systems further west and south. Few Marcusenius carry this kind of multi-basin range; many congeners are narrow single-river endemics by comparison.
FishBase describes its habitat as well-vegetated, muddy-bottomed floodplains and rivers, and classes the species as potamodromous — it migrates seasonally between the main river channel and the surrounding floodplain rather than staying put year-round, tracking the rise and fall of the flood pulse that defines life in these African river systems.
Water conditions across its range are warm tropical freshwater, with FishBase citing temperatures around 72–75 °F and a pH of 7.0 and above — circumneutral to slightly alkaline rather than the soft, acidic blackwater some other mormyrids favour. Visibility in these muddy, well-vegetated floodplain channels is typically poor, which is exactly the setting in which the electric sense outperforms eyesight.
Feeding
In the wild, Marcusenius macrolepidotus is a nocturnal, shoaling forager that uses its self-generated electric field to detect aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic prey — hidden in mud, root tangles and submerged vegetation on the floodplain, work its eyes alone could not do in the dark, turbid water it favours.
In the aquarium it is a strict carnivore. Care guidance for this type of mormyrid recommends live or frozen Tubifex, other worms, insect larvae and Artemia, offered after the tank lights go off to match the fish's nocturnal feeding rhythm; it will generally ignore dry foods and does not thrive on a vegetable-heavy diet.
Mating
FishBase records that Marcusenius macrolepidotus spawns during the rainy season, moving out onto the shallow, vegetated floodplain water it also uses for feeding and shelter — the same flood pulse that governs its seasonal movements also triggers reproduction. Maturity is reached at a modest size, around 5.1 in, well short of the species' 12.6 in maximum.
As in other mormyrids, the electric-organ discharge is thought to play a courtship and species-recognition role, with fish able to detect differences in EOD waveform and pulse rate between individuals and species. Whether — or exactly how — this operates in M. macrolepidotus specifically has not been documented in the sources available here; this account notes the general pattern for the family rather than claiming it has been confirmed for this species.
Breeding
FishBase reports that females produce on the order of 6,000 eggs per spawning during the rainy-season floodplain spawn described above — a substantial clutch for a mormyrid, though details of nest-building, fertilisation and incubation are not documented for this species.
Captive breeding of Marcusenius macrolepidotus is not established in the hobby. Like mormyrids generally, it is notoriously difficult to spawn under aquarium conditions, and the handful of specimens that reach the trade under the Bulldog name are understood to be wild-caught rather than farmed. Rather than speculate on captive spawning triggers or parental behaviour, this account states plainly that the wild breeding pattern above is what is documented, and that aquarium breeding has not been reported.
In the aquarium
Where Marcusenius macrolepidotus does appear in the trade, it is usually sold under the established common name Bulldog. Care guidance for this type of mormyrid calls for a tank of at least 39.4 in in length, dim lighting, and dense hiding — caves, driftwood and planting — since these are shy, largely nocturnal fish that stress under bright, open conditions; feeding is best done after the lights go off, matching the wild foraging rhythm described above. FishBase notes the species is shoaling in the wild, and the aquarium guidance agrees: a group is the more natural, lower-stress arrangement than a lone individual.
Two care points matter beyond furnishings. First, at up to 12.6 in this is not a small fish, and stocking should plan for the adult size from the outset rather than the juvenile usually sold. Second, mormyrids are markedly sensitive to poor water quality and to some medications, and care notes for the species specifically flag that aquarium equipment can interfere with the electric organ discharge these fish rely on to navigate and sense their surroundings — a reason to keep electrical equipment and stray currents to a minimum and to introduce the species only into a mature, stable, well-cycled tank. This is a moderate-to-expert fishkeeper's fish rather than a beginner community option.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Marcusenius macrolepidotus as Least Concern, an assessment dated 19 June 2018. The species' wide distribution across multiple, largely separate African river systems — the Zambezi, Congo, Lake Rukwa, Tanzanian and South African coastal rivers, the Cunene and the Okavango — supports that status: it is not confined to a single threatened locality the way many narrower-range Marcusenius are.
As with other African floodplain fish, the longer-term pressures are indirect rather than acute: damming and flow regulation, water abstraction and land-use change along the rivers and floodplains it depends on for both feeding and reproduction. Because the species is only sparingly collected for the aquarium trade, hobby demand is not considered a meaningful factor in its conservation outlook.
