Taxonomy & naming
Marcusenius victoriae was described in 1929 by the British limnologist and ichthyologist E. B. Worthington, originally placed in the genus Gnathonemus as Gnathonemus victoriae. The species was later transferred to Marcusenius, and specialist mormyrid taxonomy (mormyrids.myspecies.info) as well as the wider literature now treat Marcusenius victoriae as the valid combination. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the most ancient surviving lineages of ray-finned fish. The type locality spans Lake Victoria, Lake Kyoga (historically spelled Kioga) and Lake Kwania, together with the Nile River, in East Africa; syntype specimens held at the Natural History Museum, London, are dated to 1928, consistent with Worthington's fieldwork on the Lake Victoria system in the late 1920s.
The genus Marcusenius was erected by the American ichthyologist Theodore Gill in 1862 and is treated in ichthyological etymology references as commemorating a naturalist surnamed Marcusen associated with early anatomical study of the mormyrid electric organ — a dedication not independently re-verified for this article. The species epithet victoriae is the Latin genitive of "Victoria", naming the fish directly for Lake Victoria, the East African lake at the heart of its type locality and range. As in other Marcusenius, species-level identification in this genus is notoriously difficult from external appearance alone; researchers studying the group increasingly rely on the waveform of the electric-organ discharge (EOD) to separate look-alike species rather than on colour or shape.
Morphology
Marcusenius victoriae shows the standard mormyrid build: a laterally compressed body, a small, low-set mouth suited to picking invertebrates off the bottom, a long-based dorsal fin set opposite a similarly elongated anal fin toward the rear of the body, and a deeply forked tail attached to a narrow caudal peduncle. At the base of that peduncle sits the electric organ, a modified muscle mass that fires the fish's own pulse-type discharge — the physical basis for the species' weakly electric, electrolocating lifestyle.
As in other mormyrids, the brain is disproportionately large for a fish of this size, with an enlarged, richly folded cerebellum dedicated to processing the constant stream of electrosensory information returned by the EOD — the anatomical basis for the family's reputation as unusually intelligent "thinking fish". FishBase gives a maximum recorded length of about 10.2 in total length, while field material from the Nile River basin more typically runs 5.1–8.7 in TL as an adult — a moderate-sized mormyrid rather than either a nano-tank fish or a size-trap giant. Habitat
Marcusenius victoriae is native to the Lake Victoria basin and the adjoining Nile system of East Africa, recorded from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Within that range the IUCN assessment describes it as occurring from the Lake Kyoga system through to the Middle Akagera system in Rwanda, and FishBase lists a broad set of habitat types across the basin: rivers, swamps, freshwater lakes, marshes and inland deltas rather than a single narrow niche.
A study of the Nile River basin population specifically found the fish in shallow inshore waters near river mouths, over soft and rocky bottoms close to marginal vegetation — exactly the shallow, plant-fringed, often murky margins where a weakly electric fish's electrolocation earns its keep over eyesight alone. That same study recorded water temperatures of roughly 71–77 °F and found the species tolerant of a wide range of dissolved-oxygen levels, from well-oxygenated open water to distinctly hypoxic swamp conditions — a flexibility that likely helps it persist across the varied, seasonally fluctuating wetlands of the Lake Victoria and Nile system. Feeding
FishBase describes Marcusenius victoriae as insectivorous, taking chironomid (non-biting midge) larvae along with ostracods, water mites (Hydracarina), clam shrimp (Conchostraca) and copepods of the genus Diaptomus. As in other mormyrids, prey is located primarily by electrolocation — the fish reads distortions in its own self-generated electric field to find small, often buried or hidden invertebrates in the murky, marginal-vegetation habitat it favours, a sense that outperforms vision in the low-visibility water typical of its range. Specific feeding-time behaviour (diurnal versus nocturnal activity) is not documented for this species in the sources consulted; mormyrids as a family are generally most active after dark.
Mating

Marcusenius victoriae is not a well-established aquarium fish, and no common trade name for it is documented in the sources consulted; where it does appear, general elephantnose and mormyrid care guidance applies. That guidance, drawn from care literature covering the family broadly, calls for stable, clean water with minimal turbidity, dim lighting and dense hiding places such as caves, driftwood and planting — conditions that echo the shallow, plant-fringed, soft-bottomed water documented for this species in the wild. A tank of at least 39.4 in in length is the recommended minimum, and mormyrids are not well suited to being kept alone; larger species in particular do best in pairs or small groups rather than as a single specimen.
Two care points matter beyond furnishings. First, like all mormyrids this is a scaleless fish, markedly more sensitive than scaled species to salt and to many common medications, so treatments should be dosed conservatively and only when clearly necessary. Second, feeding should lean on live or frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm and brine shrimp are specifically recommended in the care literature — rather than dry foods, matching the strongly invertebrate-based diet documented for the species in the wild.
