Marcusenius ussheri is a weakly electric mormyrid from the coastal rivers of West Africa, a member of one of the oldest surviving branches of the bony fishes — the Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth. Like every member of its family it carries an electric organ near the base of the tail that fires a species-specific, pulse-type discharge, used to read the dark, sediment-laden water of its home rivers by electrolocation and to communicate with other mormyrids rather than by sight. It is one of many Marcusenius species scattered across Africa's rivers, widespread but data-sparse, and essentially unknown as a deliberately bred aquarium fish — an animal whose basic biology is still only partly understood.

Taxonomy & naming

Marcusenius ussheri was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1867. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantfishes, an exclusively African family of weakly electric fishes — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, a scattered, deep-time radiation of fishes found on four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) and united by that toothed lingual bone rather than by any shared modern habitat. The Mormyridae are entirely convergent with, and unrelated to, the electric knifefishes of South America (Gymnotiformes); the two groups evolved similar electric senses independently on opposite sides of the Atlantic. NCBI Taxonomy and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the standing authority for valid fish names, both accept Marcusenius ussheri as the valid name.

The genus name Marcusenius honours Dr. Johann Andreas Marcusen (1817–1894), a Latvian physician and ichthyologist. The species epithet ussheri is a patronym for Herbert Taylor Ussher (1836–1880), a colonial Governor of the Gold Coast — reflecting the 19th-century pattern in which colonial administrators and officers, rather than career naturalists, supplied the specimens that filled European museum collections and ended up commemorated in the names. Mormyrids as a group are notoriously difficult to tell apart by eye; many species, including several in Marcusenius, are reliably distinguished only by their species-specific electric organ discharge (EOD), so appearance-based identifications of this genus should be treated with caution.

Morphology

Marcusenius ussheri has the general mormyrid build: a laterally compressed body, a slender caudal peduncle leading to a small, forked tail, and a comparatively small, unspecialised mouth — it lacks the long, trunk-like chin appendage (the Schnauzenorgan) that makes some of its relatives in the genus Gnathonemus so instantly recognisable. Colouration in mormyrids of this kind is typically a plain grey-brown to olive, with little of the bold patterning seen in some other Osteoglossiformes.

As in all mormyrids, an electric organ near the base of the tail generates a weak, pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD), used for electrolocation in murky water and, because the discharge is often species- and sex-specific, for communication with other fish of its kind. FishBase records a maximum size of 13.8 in standard length (SL) and a maximum weight of 469 g, making it a solidly built, mid-sized mormyrid rather than one of the family's smaller species. Detailed data on typical aquarium size are sparse, since the species is only occasionally encountered in the trade.

Habitat

Marcusenius ussheri is a West African species, recorded from Liberia east through Ghana (the historical Gold Coast) and separately from the Ouémé River in Benin. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, demersal, potamodromous fish — one that migrates within fresh water, moving between river reaches or floodplain habitats on a seasonal cycle, rather than a fish that goes to sea. It lives in tropical African rivers of the Upper Guinean coastal belt and adjoining basins.

Specific water-chemistry data for this species were not found in the cache used to write this account. As a general guide, and consistent with other West African mormyrids that share its range, these rivers tend to run warm (roughly 75–82 °F) and soft, with slightly acidic to neutral water, often stained with tannins from decaying leaf litter and wood — precisely the dim, low-visibility conditions in which an electric sense outperforms eyesight. Feeding

Mating

Courtship and mate recognition in mormyrids generally run through the electric organ discharge (EOD) rather than through visual display, since a species- and often sex-specific pulse pattern can serve much the same signalling role that colour or movement plays in other fishes. Wild reproductive behaviour for Marcusenius ussheri specifically has not been documented in the sources available for this account, and mormyrid breeding biology in general remains poorly studied. Mormyrids as a family are thought to be seasonal, flood-triggered spawners, with reproductive activity tied to the rains and rising water of the African wet season, but the courtship sequence, spawning site and any pair-bonding behaviour in this species have not been reliably described.

As with related mormyrids, the electrical noise and glass-and-filter acoustics of a home aquarium likely interfere with the fish's own EOD-based signalling, which is one plausible reason natural courtship is essentially never observed in captivity.

Breeding

Marcusenius ussheri is essentially not bred in the aquarium hobby, and — as with most mormyrids — its reproductive biology is poorly known even in the scientific literature. Wild spawning is believed to follow the same seasonal, flood-triggered pattern thought typical of the family, with the EOD likely playing some role in courtship or species recognition, but details of nest site, egg-laying and any parental behaviour have not been reliably documented for this species. Some mormyrids are thought to guard eggs among vegetation, but this has not been confirmed for M. ussheri.

Aquarists should not expect to breed this fish, and virtually all specimens that do reach the trade are wild-caught rather than captive-bred. This is a species to observe, not a project fish to pair up for eggs.

In the aquarium

Marcusenius ussheri is a rarely traded mormyrid, and care information specific to the species is limited; the safest approach is to apply the well-established general care pattern for elephantfishes. Practical Fishkeeping recommends a minimum aquarium footprint of around 39.4 in in length for elephantfishes as a group, with a soft substrate, dim lighting and abundant cover from roots, wood or plants so the fish feels secure by day and can forage naturally after dark. Water quality needs to be excellent and stable — mormyrids in general tolerate essentially no ammonia or nitrite — and, like most of the family, this species is likely sensitive to copper-based medications and should be dosed conservatively with anything.

Mormyrids can be territorial toward their own kind in a confined space, so a single specimen with calm, non-nippy tankmates, or a properly sized group in a larger tank, is the more reliable approach than adding a lone fish to a tank that already holds a conspecific. Because so little is documented about this particular species' temperament and requirements, keepers should treat any specimen with extra caution and be prepared to adjust based on its behaviour rather than a fixed recipe.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Marcusenius ussheri as Least Concern (Red List version 2020.2). The assessment describes it as data-sparse but widespread across West African river systems, spanning multiple countries from Liberia to Benin, and it is not currently considered at risk at the species level.

As with many broadly distributed, lightly studied West African river fishes, the main long-term pressures are generic rather than species-specific — habitat degradation, sedimentation and water-quality decline across the rivers it inhabits — rather than any documented population decline. Given how little targeted research exists on this species, that Least Concern status reflects its wide range more than a thoroughly quantified population trend.
