Marcusenius mento is a little-known member of the Mormyridae, the weakly electric elephantnose fishes of Africa, within Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, among the oldest surviving lineages of bony fish, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth. Described by George Albert Boulenger in 1890 from Gabon, it is unusually wide-ranging for a mormyrid, turning up in river systems from the Guinea coast and the upper Niger to Cameroon and Gabon. Like its relatives it reads the dim, often tannin-stained water of its home rivers with a weak electric field generated by an organ in its tail, a sense used for both navigation and communication and supported by one of the largest brain-to-body ratios of any fish. It is assessed Least Concern by the IUCN, but in the aquarium it is a demanding, soft-water specialist that is touchy about water quality and medication, and — like almost all mormyrids — essentially unbred in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Marcusenius mento belongs to the Mormyridae — the elephantnose fishes and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the most ancient living branches of the teleost fishes. The species was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1890 as Mormyrus mento, with a type locality in Gabon. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Marcusenius mento (Boulenger, 1890) as the currently valid name, the parenthetical authority signalling that the species has since been moved out of the genus in which it was first described.

Boulenger himself later reassigned the species to Gnathonemus, and later revisions of the crowded, superficially uniform Mormyridae split many blunt-snouted, small-mouthed West African species like mento out of Gnathonemus and into the genus Marcusenius, where it sits today. The genus name is generally credited to the nineteenth-century naturalist Johann Heinrich Marcusen, who worked on the anatomy of these fishes' electric organs; the species epithet mento is Latin for "chin," almost certainly referring to the shape of the fish's short, blunt lower jaw. Marcusenius is a large genus of look-alike African mormyrids, several of which are difficult to separate on external appearance alone and are more reliably told apart by their species-specific electric-organ discharge (EOD) than by eye — worth keeping in mind for any "mento" offered in the trade.

Morphology

Like other mormyrids, Marcusenius mento has the family's distinctive silhouette: a laterally compressed, moderately elongate body, a small mouth set on a short, blunt snout typical of the genus, and a slender caudal peduncle leading to a small, forked tail. The dorsal and anal fins sit far back on the body, roughly mirroring one another, a layout shared across the family. Colouration is unremarkable by cichlid standards — typically a plain olive-brown to silvery-grey without bold pattern — which fits a fish that relies on electroreception rather than vision or display for much of its sensory world.

Reported maximum size is around 12.6 in total length (FishBase), making it one of the larger Marcusenius species; aquarium specimens are generally smaller. As in other mormyrids the skin carries fine, delicate scales and a dense field of electroreceptor organs, which is part of why the group is unusually sensitive to declining water quality and to some medications (see "In the aquarium"). The electric organ itself sits in the caudal peduncle and produces a weak, species-specific pulse discharge used for both electrolocation and communication — the family's signature adaptation, and one that arose independently of, though convergent with, the unrelated electric knifefishes of South America.

Habitat

Marcusenius mento is widely distributed across West and Central African river systems, with records spanning Senegal, the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia, the upper Niger River, Cameroon, and the type locality of Gabon. That is an unusually broad range for a mormyrid, many of which are narrow single-river endemics, spreading mento across several separate coastal drainages of the Guinea Highlands and the Niger basin rather than confining it to one river system.

The species favours the soft, acidic-to-neutral, warm water typical of West African lowland rivers and floodplains — tropical conditions around 75–82 °F, often tannin-stained and dim beneath overhanging vegetation. That dark, low-visibility water is exactly the setting in which a weak electric sense pays off, letting the fish read its surroundings and locate food and other mormyrids where eyesight alone would tell it little.

Feeding

In the wild, mormyrids like Marcusenius mento are bottom-oriented invertivores, using their electric sense to detect prey hidden in sediment, roots, or leaf litter, and foraging mostly after dark. The diet centres on aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other soft-bodied invertebrates.

In the aquarium it should be offered live or frozen invertebrate foods — mosquito larvae, bloodworm, white worms, Tubifex, Daphnia, and brine shrimp are all reported to be taken readily — rather than relying on dry foods, which many mormyrids are slow to accept. Because it forages nocturnally, feeding after the lights go out, or at dusk, gets food to the fish before more active, sighted tankmates clean it up.

Mating

Courtship and spawning in Marcusenius mento are essentially undocumented, which is typical for the genus. What is known comes from mormyrids generally: the same electric organ discharge (EOD) used for electrolocation also carries a signal used in courtship and species recognition, letting a fish identify a same-species partner — and reject the wrong one — largely by its electric signature rather than by sight or close approach.

In the wild, mormyrid spawning appears tied to the seasonal rains: rising, flood-swollen rivers seem to trigger reproduction, likely because floodplain vegetation offers both food and cover for eggs and fry. Beyond that broad pattern, the details of pairing, courtship display, and spawning behaviour in Marcusenius mento specifically are not well documented.

Breeding

Marcusenius mento is not a fish the hobby breeds. Like the great majority of mormyrids, its reproduction is poorly understood and has rarely, if ever, been achieved in a home aquarium. What little is known about the family points to seasonal, flood-triggered spawning in the wild, with some mormyrids thought to scatter or deposit eggs among submerged vegetation, but confirmed accounts of captive spawning — let alone a repeatable protocol — do not exist for this species.

The near-total absence of captive breeding means essentially all mento in the aquarium trade are wild-caught, and it also means basic facts that are routine for many aquarium fish — sexing, courtship, egg or fry care — remain open questions here. Keepers should treat any claim of having bred it with appropriate scepticism, and treat the fish itself as a wild-collected animal rather than a farmed one.

In the aquarium

Marcusenius mento is not a beginner's fish. It needs soft, acidic-to-neutral water held at a stable 75–82 °F, dim lighting, and a calm tank with plenty of cover — driftwood, roots, and shadowed retreats — reflecting its nocturnal habits in dark, tannin-stained rivers. A tank of at least 39.4 in in length is recommended even for a single fish, and gentle, well-oxygenated, unpolluted water is essential: mormyrids as a group are markedly sensitive to declining water quality and can react badly to medications that other fish tolerate, so treatments should be dosed conservatively, with copper-based products avoided wherever possible.

Like many mormyrids, individuals can be intolerant of their own kind or of similarly shaped tankmates, apparently reacting to each other's electric signals as much as their appearance, so a single specimen or a well-established group in a suitably large tank is generally safer than a casual pairing. Feed it after dark with live or frozen invertebrate foods (see "Feeding"), watch it closely during acclimation and any treatment, and expect a shy, retiring fish that is more often heard than seen after lights-out — a rewarding but genuinely advanced species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Marcusenius mento as Least Concern, reflecting its unusually wide distribution across West and Central African river systems and the absence of any major identified threat to the species as a whole.

That said, a wide range does not mean every population is secure: West African rivers face ongoing pressure in parts of the range from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and damming, and a species assessed at the whole-range level can still decline locally. As with most mormyrids, the aquarium trade draws on wild-collected fish rather than captive-bred stock, which places a modest but real collection pressure near collection points, even though it is not currently considered a conservation concern for the species overall.
