Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrus hildebrandti was described by the German naturalist Wilhelm Peters in 1882. It belongs to the family Mormyridae within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — among the oldest living lineages of bony (teleost) fishes, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth. Osteoglossiformes is a scattered, deep-time radiation spread across four continents; Mormyridae itself is exclusively African and is the largest family in the order, with several hundred species distributed through the continent's rivers, floodplains and lakes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standard authority for the valid name Mormyrus hildebrandti.
The genus name Mormyrus is borrowed from the Greek mormyros, originally the name of an unrelated Mediterranean sea bream; eighteenth-century naturalists reused the word for this African freshwater genus with no claim of relationship to the marine fish. The species epithet hildebrandti is a Latinized patronym honoring Johannes Maria Hildebrandt (1847–1881), a German botanist and explorer active in East Africa in the same period Peters was working through fish collections from the region — a common pattern in nineteenth-century taxonomy, where new species were dedicated to the collectors and expedition naturalists whose specimens reached European museums, regardless of their own field of study.
Morphology
Like other Mormyrus, Hildebrandt's elephant-snout fish has an elongate, laterally compressed body and a small, low-set mouth — a subtler, less exaggerated snout than the trunk-like chin appendage of the genus Gnathonemus. FishBase records the coloration as silvery-gray overlaid with darker spots. As in all mormyrids, an electric organ sits in the caudal peduncle near the base of the tail; it generates a weak, pulse-type electric-organ discharge (EOD) that the fish reads through electroreceptors distributed over its skin, building a real-time electrical picture of its surroundings.
FishBase gives a maximum length of 7.9 in standard length (SL) for the species; total length would run somewhat longer, though a species-specific TL figure is not documented in the literature reviewed. Mormyrids as a group are noted for one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, with an enlarged cerebellum devoted to processing the constant stream of electrosensory information — a trait that has earned the family the popular label of "thinking fish," though detailed neuroanatomical data specific to M. hildebrandti has not been located.
Habitat
Mormyrus hildebrandti is endemic to the Athi River system of Kenya, a single East African river drainage rather than a wide basin — FishBase lists no other confirmed range for the species. It occupies freshwater habitat and is demersal, living and foraging near the bottom rather than in open water.
Like other mormyrids, it almost certainly depends on the dark, sediment- or tannin-influenced water typical of African rivers, the low-visibility conditions its electric sense is built to read. Detailed limnological data — temperature, pH, flow and substrate specific to the Athi River reaches where the species occurs — has not turned up in the sources reviewed here; the range is narrow enough, and the data sparse enough, that habitat loss in this one river system is the primary concern for the species (see Conservation).
Feeding
Mormyrids hunt largely by electrolocation, using their EOD-generated field to detect the disturbance small invertebrates cause in the water and substrate around them, an approach that lets them forage effectively after dark or in turbid water where vision is of limited use. The small, forward-set mouth of Mormyrus species is suited to picking individual prey items off or out of the substrate rather than taking large food items.
No diet study specific to M. hildebrandti was located. General elephantnose care literature (covering the wider Mormyrus/Gnathonemus group) lists mosquito larvae, bloodworm, white worm, black worm, Daphnia, Tubifex and Cyclops, offered live or frozen, as suitable aquarium fare for these fish, reflecting a diet of small aquatic invertebrates consistent with what is known of the group in the wild.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behavior have not been documented for Mormyrus hildebrandti specifically. What is known comes from mormyrids generally: wild populations are thought to spawn seasonally, with breeding activity tied to flood pulses that create the temporary, food-rich conditions favorable for raising young. The species-specific EOD is believed to play a role in courtship and mate recognition — allowing a fish to identify others of its own kind among the many mormyrid species that can look nearly identical — though the fine detail of how that signal functions in pairing or spawning is still poorly worked out even for well-studied mormyrids.
No eggs, courtship displays or spawning sites have been described for this species in the literature reviewed, and its data-deficient IUCN status reflects that broader gap as much as any single missing fact.
Breeding
Mormyrus hildebrandti is not known to have been bred in captivity. FishBase records no breeding data for the species, and mormyrids as a family remain difficult and rarely successful aquarium breeders — the flood-triggered spawning cues of the wild are hard to reproduce, and the courtship role of the EOD is not well enough understood to manage deliberately.
For some other mormyrids there is a hypothesis that eggs are guarded among vegetation after spawning, but parental-care behavior for this species has not been documented, and nothing should be assumed about it beyond that general, unconfirmed pattern in the family.
In the aquarium
Hildebrandt's elephant-snout fish is rarely, if ever, seen in the aquarium trade, and species-specific husbandry data is essentially absent from the literature. What follows is general elephantnose/Mormyrus guidance rather than information confirmed for this species: water around 79–82 °F and pH 6.8–7.2, dim lighting, and a dark, soft substrate that lets a bottom-oriented, electrosensitive fish settle. A tank of at least 59.1 in in length is recommended for the group given their size and active foraging behavior. As in other mormyrids, the skin is scaleless, so copper-based medications must be avoided and any treatment dosed conservatively.
Mormyrids in general are sensitive to poor water quality and do best in stable, well-filtered, mature aquaria. They can be aggressive toward their own kind and toward other mormyrids, so keeping more than one individual calls for a tank large enough to let animals break line of sight from each other, or keeping a single specimen; toward unrelated tankmates they are generally not a problem. Given how little is documented about this particular species, anyone keeping it should treat the fish as an experiment guided by general elephantnose practice rather than a settled care routine.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrus hildebrandti as Data Deficient, an assessment dated 31 January 2006. Data Deficient means there is not enough information on population size, trend or distribution to assign a threat category — it is not a clean bill of health, only an acknowledgment that too little is known to say more.
The species' entire known range is the Athi River system in Kenya, and FishBase flags habitat loss as a threat. A single-river endemic is inherently vulnerable to whatever pressures affect that one drainage — water abstraction, pollution and habitat degradation are documented concerns across Kenyan rivers generally — but no population trend or dedicated conservation assessment specific to this species was found beyond the 2006 Data Deficient rating.
