Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrus joannisii was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1847, one of many African mormyrids named in the mid-19th century as European museums received specimens from Egypt and the wider Nile basin. It sits in the family Mormyridae, the weakly electric elephantfishes, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, among the oldest surviving lineages of teleost fish and named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a matching plate on the roof of the mouth. Catalog of Fishes lists Mormyrus joannisii as a currently recognized species, and museum collections such as the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris hold cataloged specimens from Egypt.
The genus Mormyrus was established by Linnaeus in 1758, borrowing an old Greek name, mormyros, that classical authors had applied to an unrelated marine sea bream; naturalists later reapplied it to this exclusively African freshwater group of elongate-snouted, weakly electric fish. The species epithet joannisii is a Latinized patronym in the -ii form conventionally used to honor a person's surname; the identity of the person commemorated is not established in the sources reviewed here. Unlike some of its better-known relatives, M. joannisii has no dedicated FishBase account and is rarely discussed outside specialist ichthyological literature, so much of its biology has to be inferred from the genus as a whole.
Morphology

Mormyrids generally live in slow, turbid, often tannin-stained river channels, floodplain pools, and backwaters where visibility is poor for most of the day and night — the setting their electric sense evolved to read. Anyone who does encounter it should treat it, cautiously, as a typical mid-to-large mormyrid: a soft, sandy or silty substrate (never sharp gravel, which can injure the sensitive snout), dim lighting, and plenty of open swimming space alongside cover it can retreat to during the day.
The family's care requirements are demanding. Mormyrids are scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and to poor water quality generally; they can be aggressive toward their own species, using electric signaling to intimidate and stress subordinates to the point of starvation, so a lone specimen or a carefully managed group is usually the safer approach. A tank sized for an adult elephant-snout fish of unknown but probably substantial size, filtration that keeps ammonia and nitrite at zero, and a keeper willing to feed live or frozen invertebrate foods after dark are baseline requirements, not options.
