Mormyrus thomasi is a little-known elephantfish of Central African rivers, one of roughly sixty Mormyrus species in the bonytongues (Osteoglossiformes), an order that traces back to some of the oldest living lineages of teleost fish and takes its name from a toothed bone at the back of the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth. Like every member of the family Mormyridae, it is weakly electric: an organ near the base of the tail generates a species-specific, pulse-type electric discharge it uses to find its way and find food in dark, sediment-laden water, and to signal to other mormyrids. Described in 1938 and named for the French explorer Jean Thomas, it remains poorly studied — the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient — and reaches a modest 28 cm in length, well short of the size traps found elsewhere in this order.

Taxonomy & naming

Mormyrus thomasi was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1938, with a type locality in the former French Congo, part of Central Africa. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantfishes — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues. Osteoglossiformes is one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleost fish, a scattered radiation with living representatives on four continents; the order's name refers to a bony, toothed structure on the tongue that bites against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth, a trait shared across the group from the South American arapaima to the African featherback knifefishes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Mormyrus thomasi as a valid species within Mormyrus, one of the largest genera of mormyrids with around sixty described species across sub-Saharan Africa.

The genus name Mormyrus comes from an old Greek name, mormyros, applied by classical authors to an unrelated marine fish and later adopted for this African freshwater group. The species epithet thomasi is a patronym honoring Jean Thomas (1890–1932), a French explorer and collector active in Central Africa around the time the type material was gathered. Because so many Mormyrus species look similar and are most reliably told apart by their electric organ discharge, identification of preserved museum specimens such as the type series depends heavily on fin-ray counts and body proportions rather than colour or pattern.

Morphology

Mormyrus thomasi has the elongated, laterally compressed body typical of the genus, with a small mouth set beneath a somewhat pointed, downturned snout — a shape shared with other Mormyrus species that probe soft substrate for food, rather than the trunk-like schnauzenorgan seen in the elephantnose Gnathonemus petersii. FishBase records a maximum length of about 11 in total length, a modest size for the genus, which includes species reaching well over half a metre. The dorsal and anal fins sit far back on the body, near a slender caudal peduncle, and colouration is generally a plain grey-brown to olive with little pattern, typical of mormyrids that rely more on electrical signalling than visual display.

Like all mormyrids, Mormyrus thomasi carries a specialised electric organ near the base of the tail, derived from modified muscle tissue, which produces a weak, pulse-type electric-organ discharge (EOD). The EOD is used for electrolocation — sensing the shape and position of objects, prey and other fish in dark or turbid water where vision is of little use — and its waveform is often species-specific, so closely related mormyrids can be told apart more reliably by discharge pattern than by appearance alone. Mormyrids are also noted for an unusually large brain relative to body size, with an enlarged cerebellum devoted to processing the constant stream of electrosensory information; the family is often cited as having one of the highest brain-to-body-mass ratios of any fish group.

Habitat

Mormyrus thomasi is native to Central Africa. FishBase records it from the Chad basin and from Gabon, the Congo and the Central African Republic, placing it within the wider Congo River system and neighbouring basins of Central Africa. The Congo basin alone supports more than a hundred mormyrid species, roughly half the family's total diversity, and Mormyrus thomasi is a small part of that radiation.

Congo basin rivers typically run turbid, carrying a heavy load of suspended sediment that limits visibility, over beds of mud and sand — precisely the kind of low-visibility water in which a weakly electric fish has an advantage. Water across the region is generally soft and ranges from slightly acidic to neutral, with warm, stable tropical temperatures. Beyond these basin-level generalities, published habitat data specific to Mormyrus thomasi are sparse; the species is listed as Data Deficient in part because its ecology has not been closely studied in the field.

Feeding

Mormyrids as a group feed largely by probing soft sediment for buried invertebrates, using their electric sense to detect prey that cannot be seen in dark or turbid water; the downturned mouth and snout shape of Mormyrus thomasi are consistent with this bottom-probing habit, though no detailed dietary study of the species itself has been published.

In the aquarium, mormyrids in general are fed live or frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, mosquito larvae and brine shrimp are all reported as suitable foods for the family — offered after dark or under dim lighting, since these fish are largely nocturnal foragers that can be reluctant to feed under bright light or in the open.

Mating

Mating in mormyrids is tied to seasonal flooding: wild populations are understood to spawn when rising water opens up new floodplain habitat, though the details for most species, Mormyrus thomasi included, have not been documented. The electric organ discharge is thought to play a role in courtship and species recognition — allowing a fish to identify a potential mate of the correct species by the shape of its pulse rather than by sight — but how this plays out in Mormyrus thomasi specifically is not known.

No detailed account of courtship or spawning behaviour exists for this species in the sources consulted here. This gap is typical of the genus: most Mormyrus species are known mainly from museum specimens and distribution records, and their reproductive behaviour in the wild remains largely unstudied.

Breeding

Mormyrus thomasi has essentially not been bred in captivity, and this is true of mormyrids as a whole — successful aquarium breeding of the family is rare to the point of being effectively undocumented. What is understood about wild breeding comes largely from inference: seasonal, flood-triggered spawning, with some evidence that certain mormyrids guard eggs laid among aquatic vegetation, but the specifics for most species, including this one, are poorly known.

Prospective keepers should not expect to breed this species. There is no established protocol, no documented trigger that reliably induces spawning in a tank, and no clear picture of how eggs or fry are cared for even in the wild. Anyone attempting it is working from almost nothing published.

In the aquarium

Mormyrus thomasi is rarely, if ever, seen in the aquarium trade, and general mormyrid care applies rather than species-specific experience. Like other members of the family, it wants soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (roughly pH 6.0–7.0) at a warm 75–82 °F, dim lighting, and plenty of cover — driftwood, roots and dense planting — to suit a retiring, largely nocturnal temperament. A fine sand substrate is preferable to gravel, since mormyrids probe the bottom with a sensitive snout that can be injured on coarse material.

Mormyrids are notoriously sensitive to poor water quality and to certain medications — copper-based treatments and formalin are considered dangerous to the family, so routine copper dosing used for other fish should be avoided. They can also be intolerant of their own kind, sometimes sparring with conspecifics over space, so stocking density and hiding places need attention if more than one is kept. At a maximum recorded length of about 11 in, Mormyrus thomasi is a mid-sized mormyrid — larger than a dwarf species, but nowhere near the size trap of the giant arowanas or arapaima found elsewhere in this order — and it should still be given a long, spacious tank with a tight-fitting lid, since jumping is a risk shared across many bonytongues.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrus thomasi as Data Deficient, reflecting how little is known about its population size, trends or specific threats rather than any evidence that it is currently at risk. Data Deficient is a common status among Congo basin mormyrids, a large and still incompletely surveyed radiation of fish.

Broader pressures on Central African river systems — sedimentation, deforestation, damming and unregulated fishing — are general concerns for freshwater fish across the region, but no assessment specific to Mormyrus thomasi has quantified their effect on this species. Given the Data Deficient status, further field survey work is what stands between this fish and a proper conservation evaluation.
